While I'd prefer there were no kids in SL, I don't understand why there's always outrage about SL... yet Google Image Search return porn easier than any device ever created in human history.

Malachi's solution is the way to go. Take responsibility as a parent and be honest. Kids are a lot smarter - and savvy - than America currently gives them credit for.

Regards,

-Flip

Luckily, my little bundle of joy is terrible at hiding his tracks.

I do try to be open and honest with him. And I know he is going to sneak around from time to time. It's been a while, but I haven't completely forgotten that age.

But he also has to pay the piper when he gets caught. And SL is definitely no place for an 11 year old...no matter how well prepared he might be.

Even the teen grid worries me a little. The maturity gap between a 13 and 17 year old is enormous. To say nothing of an 11 year old.

I wonder how they handle the age gap on the TG? Younger teens want to hang out with the older ones because it's 'cool', but the older teens can't stand them.

Well, there is always the OpenSim project. You can get him a standalone sim on your PC that he can learn to build on. He can make his own clothes too. 45K in prims to do whatever he wants with. It is not up to Second Life standards yet for usability or stability but can be pretty fun for him I am sure.

The easiest way is to sign up at OpenLife and download their standalone client. It is pretty far behind the OpenSim builds (You can do much more with the OpenSim builds) but it is by far the easiest way to get started.

If you feel like going for the OpenSim downloads see this site:
Maxx Monde's Blog for how to set it up.

Just a option or two. He won't get the social end of SL but you can easily monitor what he does and sees.

I do not see SL's 18+ requirement being sustainable in the long run.

LL doesn't really want it .. And no one else on the web (like google) has to follow it.

I think the whole self labeling content as Adult idea is all part of this eventual shift.

Meh, to me this is less about what kind of "porn" kids see as it is some adult getting fooled into thinking their cyber-buddy is an adult when they are 13 or some kid getting lured into an rl meeting with a perv.

Let's be honest, here. SL isn't WoW. It's full of sex and sexual games going on between people. Mind games, too. There isn't some "game" to distract anyone from this, either. It is part of the "game of SL" which is a reflection of reality and roleplaying.

When I surf a porn site I don't have to worry about running into, and talking to a child about the content.

I do want an adults only grid but I don't see it happening.

I do fear there is going to be story eventually, in the news, about a real kid meeting up with some adult after a relationship in SL and the blowback may be fierce.

Slightly amusing anecdote. I had my daughter read my post in this thread to confirm that I was accurately reflecting her attitudes. I was.

I pointed her at the "goatse" Wikipedia page as I wanted to see how the concept (not the image) affected her this was after I explained the concept of a "shock site" to her. Two sentence in: "ick" and she closed the tab. Without her presence I did surf up the old address Goatse.cx - Goatse (SFW) to find if the original was still there. Nope. They found a bigger asshole to put in its place.
