Nurien: A Second Life competitor at last?

Nurien Gets $15M in Series A for 3D Social Networking

One of many news bits here

Virtual Worlds News: Nurien Gets $15M in Series A for 3D Social Networking

"According to the company's own description, the platform will also let users create "3D objects and avatars [and "spaces"] that interact and network amongst each other via virtual worlds and the web."

"Developer Nurien has announced a "next-generation social networking" platform using Epic Games' Unreal Engine 3 game engine that will allow users to interact, network, and play games with their personalized 3D avatars. "

I'd be more impressed if I could actually see their website. Anyone getting an error from the link in the article or is it just me?

Good luck keeping up a 3-D platform if you can't keep up a single site.

Their web site is in Korean and your browser may not be set up to handle it. They are also doing (or just completed) a live demo at some major event so their traffic will likely be way up for a while.

At least it will look good with the Unreal based graphics, if I could see the website that is.

There is so much virtual worlds vaporware out there right now... I'm on the team that says, "I'll believe it when I see it." Every time I see a supposed "SL killer" or even "perhaps a competitor", it really makes me appreciate Second Life all the more.

OpenSim is the closest thing out there for what I enjoy about SL, and all of the people involved with OpenSim admit there is a LONG way to go!

Ah, they have a 100% flash site (assholes) so that's probably why.

The web site appears to be in Korean as best as I can tell... but Flash is coming up very choppy.

Careful now.. I can't count how many times the SL website has been offline and the forums were bunk. And they are supposedly NOT in beta.

All kidding aside, Nvidia has a page for them with some screenshots:

Nurien by Nurien

Very impressive looking.

Let's see, impressive graphics, user generated content.. if you can hump like bunnies they got a winner on their hands.

Pretty Screenshots.

Now, how much dynamic content can there be if rendering to that level of detail normally takes a long time?

That is the one Walker loves, right? (kidding Walker)

The one with the uber smart guy that came in here like last week to defend it to the death?

Also it sounds like something you have to invest lots of RL money in to get the *collectibles*

Hopefully these guys will make a system of economy that is not like that.

I don't know anything about this place yet.. but I will be watching.

Those avatars look the dogs bollocks though. I want one and I want one now!!

Real or not though do you think SL will ever progress graphically to a similar level avatar wise? I think peeps in SL get some pretty awesome looks together given the tools available but looking at a vid like that kind of makes me all ungrateful and wanting more!

I believe that rendering is not the bottleneck for Second Life, getting the data from SL machines to your graphics card is. If Nurien actually stores content on your hard drive they could go a long ways toward removing that bottleneck, however, once any content is on personal hard drives you can pretty much forget any ownership of content unless they can figure a whole new way to handle it. With solid financial backing and support of companies like Nvidia they are likely to be worth keeping an eye on though.
