Typonese

First of all, I want to appologize for all the typos the foreign girl might do. I'm not native English speaking and I can make mistakes like everyone else.

This post is to all of you that think that I'm leaving because I had a disagreement with a couple people, this is for you.

I never leave when I have a disagreement. I love to discuss things and it always makes it more interesting when people have different views.

What made me want to leave was this: I read the bacon diskussion. Think I have the right to even though I don't eat bacon. I've seen others do, and answer in the topic even if they are vegetarians. I didn't do it because I wanted to try to disrupt the discussion or take the fun out for the rest of you. I live in a meateater's world and I know I'm in the minority. I always respect other people's views even if they differs from mine.

When I was in the bacon thread I noticed a picture that I found disgusting (think I got it right this time?) I haven't been a member for very long, but my experiences so far has been that you all seem to be very understanding and nice. So I thought I was with friends and could express my views. Obvously I couldn't. I was one of the vegans so I wasn't allowed. I should "change my settings so I could ignore the topic". So being a vegan makes me not being able to handle all topics?

I haven't eaten meat since I was 13 and wanted to stop long before that. This is a subject that I feel very strongly about, that's why I try to stay out of that kind of discussions. I didn't go in to that forum to try to convert you guys, I had views about one stupid picture. Even if some of the discussions was like the mother and father in "Spirited Away" I didn't feel compelled to "jump in".

I don't think I should need a "thicker skin". Don't think I should need it among friends. Or being afraid of posting because my English isn't perfect. Or because my views are the wrong ones. So I asked Cris how to close my account, but didn't get an answer. Because of that I'll leave my account "empty" for now. I might come back when I don't feel like I do at the moment.

I thought so as well (understanding, nice, under friends). Then I found out that I have underestimated the fact that the others know each other longer than they know me, and therefore they are more likely to take offense to what I say even though they play pretty rough among themselves often. Once I've understood that I don't need a thicker skin. I hang around, be polite and hope that I find some friends eventually.

Lila, it's not personal--- it's just customarily casual, blunt treatment here. Forums can eat one up, badly-- I would recommend knowing when to turn off the computer, rather, and no posting what one regrets.

Vegan or not, native or not, doesnt matter around here. It's standing up for what you believe in and fighting like hell those that oppose you. Am i right?

Nonetheless, the great thing about SLU is, you arent ever truly alone in any view. There is someone somewhere you feels the same way you do, holds the same morals and values and choices. You will always have someone here who thinks of you as a friend. Being foreign has no effect on whether your grammar is corrected or not. We've all made stupid typing mistakes. That's what the edit button is for! AKA the re-gredit button for those moments.

Stay around, things always get interesting. We need people. It's a fact of life. Diversity is necessary in a forum. Mob mentality is a load of .

anyhow. i know that made no sense, but i hope you stick around. And yes, if every time someone opposes you, it causes you to post a singular good-bye thread, you are gonna either need thicker skin.

You have the right to reply. Others have the right to answer as long as it isn't too outrageous.

No, you could express your views, and your did so clearly, regardless of any typos. The replies you received simply said that the thread was for fun, the picture was meant to be creepy, and serious criticism was unwanted. It really had nothing to do with being vegan (I and a bunch of other here are vegan or vegetarians). It was a few people thinking your post didn't belong in that thread - not that you didn't belong in this forum, or at least that is how I read it.

I should "change my settings so I could ignore the topic".

That was a good suggestion meant to save you some emotional upset and not to silence you. Ignoring a person or a thread is usually a better option than allowing it to seriously bother you.

So being a vegan makes me not being able to handle all topics?

It has nothing to do with you being a vegan.

No clue about "Spirited Away".

IMO if a person feels so strongly about something that anything beyond a simple comment is going to truly upset them, they should avoid the thread. Or post and know you are setting yourself up. Personally, I want to get into a knife fight with anyone who mocks another's English when it is obvious they are non-English speakers or have some other issue with the language. There was a thread on this. I posted my thoughts, got a reply that basically said "stop ruining our fun", and aside from a --> (which could be taken as serious or humorous), I left it at that - even when you continued the thread, Lila. No one silenced me - I chose not to continue. It is my issue to deal with and either raging on about it in a joking thread or leaving because of it does nothing. You can't always make people see things from your perspective, and some people have less exposure or understanding to the issues that underlies other's stances than others. The world is a diverse place, SLU included, and it doesn't always care about one's specific hot button topics, nor do all people on any forum.

I don't think I should need a "thicker skin".

You do if you want to be less easily hurt by the replies of others on the internet. But it is you decision.

Don't think I should need it among friends.
Friends on an internet forum who like to disagree and often do so in blunt terms.

Or being afraid of posting because my English isn't perfect.
I disagree with correcting other's language. But the fear is yours. If someone gives you crap, you can give it back, ignore it with a mental "fuck off", or internalize it and allow that person's simple comment to make you feel bad about yourself. I completely understand the fear of being misunderstood or made fun of for your attempts. Trust me. But to an extent, this is actually a choice of yours to make, as is the decision to silence yourself.

Or because my views are the wrong ones.

It was more that your post was completely outside of the focus and spirit of the thread, not that your view was wrong.

So I asked Cris how to close my account, but didn't get an answer. Because of that I'll leave my account "empty" for now. I might come back when I don't feel like I do at the moment.
Maybe that is the best decision for you for now. Again, only you can decide these things.

I mean these replies in the spirit of friendship, Lila. I really do understand feeling misunderstood and mocked for attempting to communicate. And maybe I minimize the impact of this on the internet as I regularly encounter much worse IRL. Regardless, I hope you do not let comments made on an internet forum make you feel bad for long.

Usually it takes a flame war in Politics to chase people off. Is the Bacon section the new P,R&S?

Lila, I hate to see anyone leave, but you have always been a gentle soul here (unlike most of these other rabblerousers - HEY QUIT THAT) with an adorable avatar.

But you have to do what you think is best. Doesn't mean I have to like it. We hardly got to know you.

Ok, maybe Cris was right in ignoring my question about how to close my account. I know I'll be coming back, sometime. Met a lot of nice people here.

This wasn't a goodbye thread like badkitty suggested, it was my way of trying to explain. I know now I didn't do a good job since Arilynn showed me she didn't understand why I felt upset. Thanks for being so nice though Arilynn, both in your post and in your PMs. Thanks for your post too badkitty.

Bams, Bunns and Brodie, I didn't get what you meant, but it's ok. You guys have been ok before. If you didn't agree with me on this it's ok. Like I said, I can handle people with an opposite view from what I have.

Lil, I think I got what you meant. Thanks, it was funny or so I thought.

Thanks Amelia. I hope I'll find my friends that too.

Thanks Cindy. You've always been a friend, since I joined here. And I know it's not just about my av. Speaking about nice looking avs yours is great. Sexiest girl around SLU. Not that it matter, I'm more into sexy guys you know.

Speaking of sexy guys .... Joshua, we've had some really nice discussions. I know you didn't get what happened. Everyone loves you so you'll not get into the situation that I'm in now.

Thanks for the cute piggy pic Summer.

And Char, I hope you don't consider my post as something I regret. I don't. I felt every word of it. But thanks. You've always been nice to me .

I still don't think this was about different views. I still think I have the right to have views about disgusting pics even if it is in the "wrong" thread. And I will still make typos, like most of us do.

I'm quite emotional at the moment, don't know why, so I'll keep a low profile here for a while. I won't be leaving, but I don't think I have "thick enough skin" right now to handle this forum. I won't let anyone drive me off again though, like I did at that other forum. Some of you are well worth staying for

1) You can't close your account.

I didn't mean anything except it was interesting. I didn't really think anyone in that thread was overly mean. I expected to see pages of debating, and there was only a handful of posts. Some of the threads can get really nasty. You just need to step back and "disconnect." People probably aren't going to change your views, and you probably won't change theirs. Its the nature of the forum. I just very much dislike the "I'm leaving" type threads. Take a break, take a valium, whatever works.

Steer clear of any confrontational threads for awhile, if need be. Just don't leave, and don't start threads saying you are! That is all.

Since when?

Sweetie, there's no angst here against vegetarians or anything like that, no reason at all to feel like you couldn't post your opinion because of that or any reason.

I really don't know what's going on and I'm very confused, but I promise you, everyone does not love me, I'm in the middle of a fight in another thread right now anyway.

I'm not sure what happened to upset you but I don't think it's as bad as you feel it is. Just take a deep breath and come gimmie a hug and reupload your avatar before I get all and .

Ok, no more "I'm leaving" threads. I know those are not "allowed". I really felt like leaving. I also know I shouldn't be in the Bacon thread. that's not allowed. Can I be in the Obama thread even though I'm not an American? And I think I have to repeat it, I wasn't trying to convert anyone, or discuss meat eating, I just read that thread and got upset over a picture. I would have been even if I had been eating meat.

And I actually thought it was a nice thing of Cris not to answer that. Gave me time to feel a bit better. Wasn't any critisism. I think Cris is handling this forum really great.
