The Hair Fair -- RANT

So I am less than happy about the Hair Fair this year. It seems laggier than years past and thats with my new souped up machine with an Nvidia 9800 with 512 on board. But there's a couple of things that *really* bug me about events like this and I've bitched a little in the past but this year I've decided to start some real drama about it. Since Tenshi hasn't and whatnot.

So first I have some pictures of some people who obviously are unable to read. The reason I say this is because when you TP in the first thing you get is a very nice message from Sasy Scarborough begging you to deprim and descript. These people either couldn't read or, like this gal, who I didn't get a pic of, couldn't be bothered:

[2008/08/24 21:16] Mitsyo Nakamori: oh yes,I do read but I honestly don´t give a shit
[2008/08/24 21:16] Vivianne Draper: yeah screw you too
[21:17] Mitsyo Nakamori: good so we do unterstand each other

Maybe if I post her name here she might give a shit huh? Too bad I didn't get her picture. I had started the convo with something snippy about how she couldn't read. You see the rest of it here.

Then I got this great idea to take pictures of these assholes and post them here. For teh drama.

This would be Sophia Foulsbane. Not only is she full and unnecessary prim (I think her arc was in the 4k range) she has an AO on to boot.

Nicole Sparkle and the rest of the dream team. Not only unable to read but idling at the Hair Fair. Could you be any more inconsiderate?

Jackie Trappen. Too stupid to read.

A huge shout out to my gals Shandolee Heron and Dionysia Elytis who, on seeing my ARC of 1, stripped down to emulate me. Go go go my ladies!

I won't bore you with more pics although I should. I will also say that the responsibility to reduce lag doesn't end with the fair attendees but should include the vendors as well. I didn't stop at any booth that went overboard on background pictures, used scripts, or in any other way was just, well, stupid and inconsiderate.

It really bugs me that we can't even get it together to do something as simple as take off prims and scripts or not use them in our builds to reduce lag and make an event like this a pleasure rather than a chore.

WHAT?! You want me to look all icky and gross and blingless?!

Are you high? I have to look like a high priced hootchie mama at all times!

Seriously though, I've seen this at the Jewelry Faire as well. If only people would think of more then themselves.

I remember one booth that was unnecessarily full of immensely huge sculpties.

Obviously the lag caused no sculpties to ever fully rez, so what I saw in reality was three HUGE red balls covering the entire store booth so it was impossible to see the hair being sold - considering all the actual vendors were buried inside these big red balls.

*shrugs* Passed that one immediately.

Yeah, it's one thing for the people attending to be assholes, but when the vendors themselves contribute so heavily to the lag by using scripted vendors, unnecessary design elements, and PARTICLES, it drives me insane. Somebody seriously needed to put their foot down with regard to booth design.

It's a shame there's no LSL function that, upon a resident's arrival, removes all their prim attachments FOR Them.

Because you can't really fix stupid.

As far as lag contributors. I think the participants, the shoppers, as well as the server limits all contribute to the lag. Honestly I think even if every one came naked the lag would still be very bad.

I heard Hair Fair even lagged OnRez? Meh, can't shop for hair this year, just going for the freebies, if I can manage to get there. That being said, maybe Hair Fair should become a website like OnRez where you can just have the hair sent to you? (I can't believe I'm even saying that, but I don't go there to look at other avatars, I go to buy new hair)

My experience with scripts is that any problems they cause are heavily, heavily overestimated. (I'm not even sure excessive scripts even do cause problems with sim performance, instead of just with other scripts.) AOs could maybe be a problem at something like Hair Fair, but given the script time numbers I've seen, scripted vendors are highly unlikely to be causing issues.

It would. The build and the people with attachments aren't helping, but the sheer number of avatars is going to cause problems all on its own. There's a reason that sims crash when they get too populated.

I finally plucked up the courage to go to Hair Fair, yesterday.

It was reasonably quiet, so the lag wasn't too hellish, but as I flew around I clocked any number of sculpties / flexis / detailed textures / fountains (!) / particle effects within the fair's build itself.

Honestly, were these really necessary?

Edited to add: oh yeah, the leopards... I forgot about the friggin' leopards. Two of them. Sat in a tree on one stall. Blinking, twitching their little sculpty tails. Very nice, but why oh why oh why oh why etc etc.

Drop the leopards, m'kay?

Bewitched doesn't get it. I'm not trying to defend Tenshi, but honestly she didn't say anything to really disagree with. If you expect people to show up near-naked to reduce lag, it has to start with the vendors. Someone didn't get the word out to some of these people to set up "minimalist" displays instead of the gaudy, sculptie, unnecessary bullshit I saw.

Furthermore, anyone who says "mindless dribble" loses my vote of confidence immediately.

It's DRIVEL, people, dribbling is what you do when you lose your mental facilities and saliva drips from your lips, unless your name is Kobe Bryant

There's this really nifty pie menu if you right click yourself. I believe it's something like "remove all attachments"

Viv, don't you know that you can't criticize hair fair? If you say something like this:

Quote:
Yes, the display sure looks nice, but look at all of the prims being used. This is a gluttonous use of prims in a sim dedicated to charity. Attempting to cruise on by this booth practically puts your avatar at a stand-still.
Then FallinMy Webb will find you, wherever you may be, and say this:

Quote:
You DID trash our booth…no seriously, you did. “I have to call this one an Epic Fail” That is trashing our booth. You are the most hateful and spiteful person I have ever encountered in SL or RL. I do hate and I do despise you…and with damned good reason. Your blog is garbage your stories are lies and your soul is full of hate. Excuse me if I don’t look past that. There are a few designers that we looked into, aka researched (try that some time), that were over their prim limits and were using many scripted items other than the allowed Split Script that donates to Locks of Love. On top of that you have folks all over the place in SCULPTED shoes and clothing, that far outnumber the few sculpty pieces in our display, scripted attachments and overly primmy hair for such a busy sim. I don’t think these shoppers deserve your criticism nor do the designers who have clearly overstepped their prim and script limits. Bring that up to the organizers privately if you have an issue and stop putting a smudge of dirt on this great and charitable event. Once and for all please step up to the plate, stop being so vindictive and say “I was wrong. I attacked HoH for personal reasons and not for anything legit. They did nothing wrong.”
I know, tl;dr, but after I finished laughing I was really, really creeped out. Um, it's a booth at Hair Fair, not your firstborn.

I don't see why it can't go both ways. I understand that you can't put split scripts up at onrez and just having then demos up there so I know what I'm looking for is pretty cool. Can't we get individual store LM's? Or, say, a void sim with just donation kiosks (since that's all I really wanted to do was drop some L in one)? Seems like that would cut down a quite a bit of the lag.

I would go for that. This is all very sad to me because the idea is a good one. It COULD work. But why should we expect the group that built a 4-sim texture nightmare with scripted fountains to be very concerned over the shopper experience?

I mean, it's the shoppers who fill the charity's coffers. If it's a pain in the ass to TP in and browse, the event gets hurt because so many people just give up.

I have 4GB of RAM and an NVIDIA 8800 with 512. There's no reason (other than LL's anemic asset server) that I shouldn't be able to get a fucking demo to rez on my head without TPing out -- on SUNDAY MORNING when the sims weren't even full.
