| witly verbiage hear ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() SLU Supporter ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | The Hair Fair -- RANT So I am less than happy about the Hair Fair this year. It seems laggier than years past and thats with my new souped up machine with an Nvidia 9800 with 512 on board. But there's a couple of things that *really* bug me about events like this and I've bitched a little in the past but this year I've decided to start some real drama about it. Since Tenshi hasn't and whatnot. So first I have some pictures of some people who obviously are unable to read. The reason I say this is because when you TP in the first thing you get is a very nice message from Sasy Scarborough begging you to deprim and descript. These people either couldn't read or, like this gal, who I didn't get a pic of, couldn't be bothered: [2008/08/24 21:16] Mitsyo Nakamori: oh yes,I do read but I honestly don´t give a shit ![]() [2008/08/24 21:16] Vivianne Draper: yeah screw you too [21:17] Mitsyo Nakamori: good so we do unterstand each other ![]() Maybe if I post her name here she might give a shit huh? Too bad I didn't get her picture. I had started the convo with something snippy about how she couldn't read. You see the rest of it here. Then I got this great idea to take pictures of these assholes and post them here. For teh drama. ![]() This would be Sophia Foulsbane. Not only is she full and unnecessary prim (I think her arc was in the 4k range) she has an AO on to boot. ![]() Nicole Sparkle and the rest of the dream team. Not only unable to read but idling at the Hair Fair. Could you be any more inconsiderate? ![]() Jackie Trappen. Too stupid to read. ![]() A huge shout out to my gals Shandolee Heron and Dionysia Elytis who, on seeing my ARC of 1, stripped down to emulate me. Go go go my ladies! I won't bore you with more pics although I should. I will also say that the responsibility to reduce lag doesn't end with the fair attendees but should include the vendors as well. I didn't stop at any booth that went overboard on background pictures, used scripts, or in any other way was just, well, stupid and inconsiderate. It really bugs me that we can't even get it together to do something as simple as take off prims and scripts or not use them in our builds to reduce lag and make an event like this a pleasure rather than a chore.

Obviously the lag caused no sculpties to ever fully rez, so what I saw in reality was three HUGE red balls covering the entire store booth so it was impossible to see the hair being sold - considering all the actual vendors were buried inside these big red balls. *shrugs* Passed that one immediately.

| It's a shame there's no LSL function that, upon a resident's arrival, removes all their prim attachments FOR Them. Because you can't really fix stupid.

Meh...
| Actually Tens is on the job. Shopping Cart Disco · Hair Fair ‘08 - First Coverage There has already been a bitchy rebuttal BEWITCHED HAIR » Tenshi Does it Again As far as lag contributors. I think the participants, the shoppers, as well as the server limits all contribute to the lag. Honestly I think even if every one came naked the lag would still be very bad.

My Mood: SL Join Date: April 2005 Blog Entries: 2 | I heard Hair Fair even lagged OnRez? Meh, can't shop for hair this year, just going for the freebies, if I can manage to get there. That being said, maybe Hair Fair should become a website like OnRez where you can just have the hair sent to you? (I can't believe I'm even saying that, but I don't go there to look at other avatars, I go to buy new hair) |

Behold, the power of flopsy
ears.
| My experience with scripts is that any problems they cause are heavily, heavily overestimated. (I'm not even sure excessive scripts even do cause problems with sim performance, instead of just with other scripts.) AOs could maybe be a problem at something like Hair Fair, but given the script time numbers I've seen, scripted vendors are highly unlikely to be causing issues. It would. The build and the people with attachments aren't helping, but the sheer number of avatars is going to cause problems all on its own. There's a reason that sims crash when they get too populated. |

| I finally plucked up the courage to go to Hair Fair, yesterday. It was reasonably quiet, so the lag wasn't too hellish, but as I flew around I clocked any number of sculpties / flexis / detailed textures / fountains (!) / particle effects within the fair's build itself. Honestly, were these really necessary? Edited to add: oh yeah, the leopards... I forgot about the friggin' leopards. Two of them. Sat in a tree on one stall. Blinking, twitching their little sculpty tails. Very nice, but why oh why oh why oh why etc etc. Drop the leopards, m'kay? |

I don't see why it can't go both ways. I understand that you can't put split scripts up at onrez and just having then demos up there so I know what I'm looking for is pretty cool. Can't we get individual store LM's? Or, say, a void sim with just donation kiosks (since that's all I really wanted to do was drop some L in one)? Seems like that would cut down a quite a bit of the lag.

I mean, it's the shoppers who fill the charity's coffers. If it's a pain in the ass to TP in and browse, the event gets hurt because so many people just give up. I have 4GB of RAM and an NVIDIA 8800 with 512. There's no reason (other than LL's anemic asset server) that I shouldn't be able to get a fucking demo to rez on my head without TPing out -- on SUNDAY MORNING when the sims weren't even full.

Yeah I didn't see teh dramaz until after I ranted. Sorry for saying you and Ten were falling down on the job. Good to see that merely saying that a display was primolicious means that you have a soul full of hate. Geesh. Honestly though, I think that if the organizers of the Hair Fair want us to deprim and descript, and they should and we should, they should do so as well. I just bought a new computer. I have a 3gb dual core cpu, 4 gb of ram, nvidia geforce 9800 with 512 on board, and my hd runs at 7200 rpm. I shouldn't lag like, ever. Now I know SL is SL and performance is not a word spoken of with reverence at LL but nonetheless, when I can barely walk there's a problem. Everything and everyone contributes to the problem and I laid due blame at the avatar's feet. But the builders and organizers and vendors of the fair also have a responsibility and asking folks to deprim and descript when they don't do so themselves is irresponsible at best and hypocritical at worst.

I don't know why I expected SL to magically improve when I got my 3Ghz duo-core with all the goodies, but in some respects there have been noticeable improvements. The rest of the issues are asset server anemia.Thinking some more about this: I've been to large parties where we packed the sim. 40 to 60 (depending on the server version) prim-heavy, blingie, over-scripted avatars jammed into a dance floor. Particles all over the place both from avs and the club's idea of "purties". And while we might get lagalicious lag, and we might see some people crashing, it is NEVER as bad as it was at the Hair Fair. Factor in the fact that so many customers really had stripped off their prims and you have to wonder what the FPS on the 4 sims was before they opened for business. You have to wonder if the vendors are as blameless as a few people would have us believe. I can move in most large crowds, albeit slowly. Once in a while attachments may not rez. But it's never never been anywhere near as bad as the Hair Fair Horror this weekend. Process of elimination: some of the vendor builds were way over the top given the stress the show would be placed under. Sixty avatars, half of whom have no attachments, just ain't gonna rape the server this badly.

| We were scooting around hairfair yesterday on a prim, six or seven of us, all with ARCs of one. At one booth we were bombarded with two blingtard idiots using gestures and chat spamming whining in Spanish (I have nothing against Spanish speakers, fyi, I am one) about how they could not buy the hair they wanted, I presume just in case someone could give them the money to buy them. They were decked out in prims, hair and bling, each with ARCs of over 3k, incuding AOs, and they wouldn't shut the fuck up. At another booth someone shouted at us saying we were blocking their view, and how inconsiderate we were -- upon examination she had a 3k+ ARC and was decked out in prims -- went on to brag about how great she looked in her 300-something prims and how we were all inconsiderate idiots. And finally, my favorite, the gal who had a 7,000+ ARC. Me: "I'm not sure if you know but if you take off a bunch of your prims, both you and everyone else will have a much easier time with lag." Her: "Oh." Random Bitch: "Who are you, the pretentious hair police?" Me: "Just trying to help out." Random Bitch: "You think it's your job to tell people how to look here? Spouting off ARCs is rude." Me: "If you think everyone else isn't looking at your 4k+ ARC and shaking their head about it, honey, you're sorely mistaken." Original 7k ARC girl: "I can splurge, it's SL." *suddenly has 8500 ARC *facepalm*

Stoking the fires of Hell
| Well. I've ranted about this already in the Hair Whore's thread. I jumped on for a little bit late last night on my alt and it was about 100 times better, I could actually move. Until I ran into avatars, I swear they were out in force last night, with enough prims attached to them to fill a sim. One guy few past me in full mecha armor, scripted wings emitting particles. If I only had a gun. Although aside from discovering Philotic Energy, freebies from Kin and Tekeli-li (free jewelry!) and omg, Deviant Kitty, I wasn't that impressed, yet. Then again I kept getting totally disoriented because the layout, sorry to say, sucks. I wandered into other sims, I had no idea where I was unless I had a map open. I will just work my way through over the week. Oh, and Tenshi's blog is worth reading today. This is what I mean by "it's because it's Tenshi". We have been bitching about the build from the opening but when Ten says it the hair makers come out to scream WITCH. It is to lulz. ![]() Quote:
