What is the ratio.. of M to F ??

I am curious about an interesting fact that was brought out to me last night.

I hold a weekly pool party at my property. I send out notices for people to come and spend a couple of hours with me and my friends.

Typically about 10 or 15 people will show up. Last night we had 3 adult males and a male child avi. There was up to 9 females in attendance. I have seen ratios at my parties of 3 or 4 to one, females to men.

Is there more women than men in SL? I have some ideas as to why but I would like to see what the other folks think.

I would say there are more women avies then men on SL but as far as the actual gender of the player?

I'm almost frightened to know that number.

Men are said to outnumber women in SL.
I think that a lot of them, though, are involved primarily in RP. You don't see them in the rest of SL.

dude. If you believe that every female avie is a woman irl your setting yourself up for an epic fail. I would not even doubt if the true number of SL females who are actually males irl is about 70%-80%. i would say men trump women 4-5 to 1. Most of us like vertigo said, hang out in the RP or combat sims so were under the radar.

In response to your question i would like to say how many black avies are there? because in the last few months. I have seen 2. sean gorham being one(and the better looking) of course.

You're asking two different questions:

1) How many female avatars are there compared to male avatars?

2) How many RL females are there compared to RL males?

Since so many females avatars are played by RL males, 1) and 2) have very different answers.

There you go bringing logic and reason into it again Beebo.

I think I did read somewhere that SL has one of the most even male to female ratios though.

Yes, most are human avis.

I do have some Furries, Nekos and others classifications of AVI that show up.

I am 99 44/100% sure that the females that show up are really females in RL. At least yesterday's party they were.

I am aware of men playing female roles for whatever the reasons. I didn't just fall off the turnip truck. I was born at night but not last night... etc.

I guess in my circle of of SL friends I tend to have more female friends than male friends. My pool party isn't a club or anything and I do get the random unknown person stopping in.

From what I've read, and grokked...

(1) There are more female avatars than male avatars. Many men play women for a host of reasons: wanting to be a lesbian, the fact that the male avatar is just a distortion of the female avatar making clothes really hard to find, attention, etc.

(2) While more males than females have registered accounts in SL's history, the amount of in-world time spent is about 50/50, since females regularly find SL more compelling and spend a lot more time per week / year / life than males.

(3) The person you're most likely talking to is your mom; SL's most prolific user base, hour wise, is females age 40 - 60.

Regards,

-Flip

I hadn't heard that statistic before, but it's certainly in line with my experience when the issue of age comes up in casual conversation. When I first joined SL, I assumed that I was in a minority, but to my surprise that has turned out not to be the case.

You really can't say for sure what the demographics of SL are. All LL can go by are the checkboxes when you sign up stating your age and gender. You can put in anything, it won't necessarily be true.

Also true Flip. Many of my friends that have admitted thier age are my age or older. Not likely to be my mother though. She quit her job when the dry cleaners switched from paper tickets to a computerized system.

I have some friends that turned out to be much younger than me. One in her 30s and another that was all of 19. Both are super intellegent and thier wisdom belies thier calendar age.

It is stll an interesting place. I have come a long way in this computer age that started for me with the Radio Shack TRS-80 Level II I bought in 1979.

Rub it in. Only a day ago Rosie told me she must have been in a cradle robbing mood when she went for me (and she's not even nearly the age you quote).

My alt's black. Of course, I haven't signed onto her in ages...

There are distressingly few RL antromorphic cats in SL. That's a major deficiency in demographics.

All of about two dozen people I've had contact with in RL are the same gender and personality as they are in game.

If SL plus SLU could be viewed as the male/female Turing test, I believe that most of the avatars I know are not cross-dressing.

Maybe I hang out in the wrong crowds.
