@Ayu

I just remembered something. People have no issues wth my ethnicity or my manner of speaking. If anything, my friends (and most newbies) have problems talking to the CAR avatar more than anything else.

You may find this interesting; Tateru did a very interesting study on LL's released user-base statistics:

Key Second Life metrics for March - Massively

That's my source.

Thanks, Flip.

Overall age demographics continue to trend towards us crusty oldies. 75.16% of the population is 25 years and older, and the older users spend far more time in Second Life than younger users with those over 44 years old continuing to be the heaviest users on average, and teens and under-25's spending the least time.

Users over 35 years old, are more active than the average. Users below that age, spend below average amounts of time in Second Life.

Females spent nearly twice as long online in Second Life in February as the boys - another trend which continues steady each month. In short, the average active Second Life user is most likely to be your mother (so to speak).

Perhaps it boils down to this: (for typical near the norm avatars)
Staring at a tight sculpted posterior of a male avatar for hours on end
or
Staring at a shapely round butt of a female avatar for hours on end.

Yeah.... I always found that excuse a bit suspect, to be honest.

Yeah, I sort of do too. I mean, SL is not a third-person shooter; I spend very little time looking at the back of my avatar, and most of my time looking at the things around me. (Not that madhu doesn't have a fine, fine ass.)

On the other hand, on the day one first signs up for SL, one might not know that yet, and so using "which ass do I prefer to stare at" as a reason for choosing a particular avatar might make more sense in that context.

Among all my straight male friends playing female avatars in MMOs only one of them doesn't have that motive, they want to stare at something pretty. Since most MMO cameras can swing around it's not just the butt, but(t) everything (face, boobs, etc).

In SL one strong motivation for males playing females is creating the idealized partner.

Sexually men are more visually stimulated than women. That means that men are more likely to split among making their idealized selves or idealized partner whereas women are more likely to focus on idealized self.

My group does not represent the average in gaming. In the gaming world the two motivations are more evenly split. In SL it would tend towards making the idealized sex object. Think about it. Your perfect partner obeying your every command.

I could understand that attitude in online games where the character is subsidiary to the action goal. But SL is a primarily a social platform, not a game, and the gender of your avatar affects everything from your clothing budget to the way in which you're treated by other residents.

Given our rather twisted and repressed cultural attitudes, I suspect men need a handy, flip excuse to explain their interest in exploring the opposite gender. The "cute butt view" explanation affirms their masculinity while they're exploring an explicitly non-masculine aspect of themselves.

XIOMARA'S RACIAL ADVENTURES IN SECOND LIFE

1) I had a guy ask me if I was Latina in real life. When I answered that indeed I am, he replied "Ooh, just like 8th Street Latinas!" He was perplexed that I wasn't interested in speaking with him after that.
2) I was chatting with this girl who was fairly new and seemed nice. We were speaking about our experiences with people from across the globe, when she said "The worst people I've met here are those damn spics." I paused for a moment, then informed her that I was one of those damn spics. She became instantly apologetic, swore she had no idea that "spic" was a racial slur because she was English, and begged for my forgiveness. I just left.
3) I had a noob insist that I couldn't possibly be Latina in real life because "you don't speak Mexican". When I kindly asked him to explain how one speaks Mexican, his reply was "you know, loud and sassy". I kept asking him to elaborate further, since I am not Mexican. He just got pissed off at me and ran. Since I don't know a lot of Mexicans in SL or RL, I still don't know how to speak Mexican.
4) Mostly, I just confuse Brazilians who seem to think I'm one of them. The ones who tell me I look Brazilian almost always look like Malibu Barbie and Ken.

As I mentioned in the previous post, it's actually more than "cute butt." It's porn-at-your-command. They're not exploring at all. All they want is a the perfect sex doll.

In response to your question i would like to say how many black avies are there? because in the last few months. I have seen 2. sean gorham being one(and the better looking) of course.
I just find it interesting that people get all when it comes to men who play female avatars. Meanwhile, I've had male avatars, and when I play as a male, no one ever questions my RL gender. I am very much a lady, thank you very much.

I still blame the low amount of black avatars in SL on the perceived failure of most skin makers to make attractive black skins. I do have a lot of friends who have black avatars, though, and most of them are also black in real life.

I think Flip is right.

Except probably should lower the 40 to 30 ..

The number of 30-something women participating in Second Life full time has to be large.

-------------

Its not really complex. There are a lot of men who play SL. They just dont spend the same amount of time there on average.

For an odd example -

I know a lot of women in SL who are Dual WoW widows.
In that their RL husband is off playing WoW ..
And so is their SL husband ..
