Re:Crossdressing

I find it best to treat people as the gender of their av, rather....... if they're a female with giant breasts and a hooker skirt, then I think they're either unfamiliar with the mesh, a female who needs those things to boost their self-confidence, or an idiotic male. However, I try to be polite to everyone.

As far as I know, I'm one of the few cross-dressers on SLU. I think Quiplash may have a few cross-dressing avatars, too.

And sometimes we just can't be sure WHAT gender they are. These fall into "Other":

My alt is a cross-dresser as well. Actually I visited your shop, Beebo, when I was first setting her up. I hadn't been to SLU yet at that time - I just found your stuff while searching for clothes for her. She is still very much a work in progress as between the cafe and RL I don't have much time to spend on her.

Sorry for bumping up against RL definitions, and I do understand your point. I was using "crossdressing" metaphorically which in SL is pretty close to the mark; if I can change my gender as easily as I change my shirt, I tend to think of a body shape as just being another sort of clothes. Forgive the slight please, it was unintentional.

Apologies... it is a misnomer indeed.

I treat avs in the way they're comfortable with.

Cross-gender avs I will treat in a neutral fashion (as in no particular bias towards male or female talk unless they start it). I will speak to the gender of the avatar owner only in PM.

Cross-gender avs that are publicly declared I will speak either neutral or to the gender of the owner.

Avatars whose owner's gender I don't know I will treat mostly neutral with a slight bias towards the avatar's gender.

Avatars that I know are not cross-gendered I'll speak to normally and in a way they're relaxed with (i.e. I watch the level of sexual references and innuendo).

However in my bunch the innuendo flies fast and furious ... coming from both genders.

OT: Had some fun at the Hanja welcome area last night. Someone I was talking with was going "I can't seem to find your avatar" to which I answered "I'm the car."

Not to worry, I didn't perceive it as a slight at all. My comment was more a clarification, or in view of your definition above, a disagreement.

Changing gender may be as easy as changing a shirt, but it has significantly more meaning for anyone who has any degree of identification with their avatar. Even the narrowly focused desire of a male to be a voyeur of lesbian sex using their female avatar still creates a meaningful context for their choice. It was a deliberate selection made to elicit a certain type of emotion that a male avatar could not provide.

In my case, for instance, the visual effect of a female avatar wearing masculine clothing is very different from that of a male avatar wearing that same clothing. The social connotations are also quite different.

Wow I opened up quite the can of worms with this thread. Thanks for all the replies.

I always try to remember there is a real live person behind that cartoon character in SL. I may or may not like them. I may or may not agree with thier politics. I always try to treat them with the same respect that I want to be treated with.

I am also human and I sometimes fall down on the job.

I'm 1. Not that I'm black IRL. Was mostly because I joined SL looking for a roleplaying world, and by now people have grown used to my black av. Not that I haven't considered a few times about switching to a white av lately.

But I love that skirt!

My avatar doesn't have giant breasts IMO, but her clothes would not be found in Nordstroms, unles Nordstroms has recently opened a stripper section. I just like the look more than most of the more conservative outfits I have seen and find her outfits fun. I don't dress very conservatively IRL, but I wouldn't wear what my av wears - one of my goals in life is to never be forcibly strip searched and deloused after being picked up for solicitation (if you are going to dream, dream big ). But I still enjoy the hookerish, sparkley heels and questionable clothing in SL.

Maybe this is why most of the people on my friends lists are guys...

What I want to know is what proportion of Furries are Furry IRL. Same with robots.

Also, there are a disproportionate number of avatars claiming to be German, considering the relative populations of Germany and the US. Therefore I conclude some "Germans" are Americans pretending to be German.

Hey none of my avatars look vaguely like me. I've yet to make a ME avatar. I will admit though the closest one to it is the police car av (kidding).

I have a medium sized caucasian cyborg, a 4'6" leprechaun (RED suit as per the classics, not green as per commercial), a hugeass robotic spider (a gift from Hunter Stern), the superdeformed police car, and a huge bald black guy (patterned after Otis from "Jump Start") ... among other avs. I'm Chinese and I still have no Chinese avs. Oh yeah, I have a totally naked avatar that has limestone texture for all his textured areas ... he's my "statue" av.

LOL. As I keep saying this is SL. Intolerant bigdiots (bigoted idiots) who can't even handle other races iRL should not even be coming into SL where they not only deal with race, they deal with cross-gender, no-gender, mechanical, inhuman, cartoon, and myriad other avatar strangeness. Man you should see how freaked out they get when we up the crazy avatar levels.

Have them speak German

If they speak more than 1 language, they're not American.

Have them speak German on VOICE. Ooh that will out people.

Except for me of course. My friends all tell me to never play the "guess where I'm from based on my speaking" game. They say it's impossible to guess where I'm from.

Many Americans were born in Germany - I was.

In elementary school 1/2 of the kids with me were born in German the other half in Japan. All of us were Americans and all of us had a parent in the Army.

My RL accent is also indistinct, people have problems telling where I am from.

I'm Chinese, born and raised in the Philippines, and whose first language is English. Had very good English education in school and I learned a lot from american films back in a time where everyone in film spoke well.

My spoken English carries no accents or twang at all and that really throws people off.
