My Mood:

The real question should be what do RL business expect from SL?

First of all; thanks to all the ones that took the survey, as also to the ones responding here.

Well, we did turn down some projects because they simply expect too much. Also, most RL businesses develop their marketing in SL from "hard figures"; so many are female, so many are male, so this marketing should work... but it doesn't, and they blame SL.

What we try to do is first trying to find out what SL Residents would expect and (maybe even) appreciate... Because we do think that a market approach, based on what a customer wants is better then a market approach based on what a company wants... the last one will always be a dissapointment for both.

What i try to find out is if there is a way to be in SL, which is not too expensive for a RL company, and appreciated by Residents.

Become a Resident. See how the world works. Meet the other residents. Many don't want RL companies in SL. They come to SL to get away from them and their marketing noise.

Or - if they're going to be there - become part of the community.
You can't just put up a nice build - which is really only a billboard - and expect much.
Tateru Nino used to write a lot about this on the old SL Insider.

But there's going to be a lot of hostility, as evidenced in this thread. I did pop into a couple of RL company builds early on in my stay, but not after my first couple of months.
I'll spend my clothing money at Nyte'n'Day or Blaze or Icing long before I spend it on Nike. 'Course, I don't like Nike in the RW, either. Nothing with a swoosh in my entire wardrobe.

True indeed... I'm in SL now for about 6 months, came in as a journalist/writer (i do write for some magazines about media and marketing) and did immediatly get lots of hostility when i asked people about their experience with RL companies... and i do think it's a normal reaction when you see the kind of "arrogance" some RL businesses had.. as also when i saw what some others wrote... (i often got an answer like "You're just gonna write something negative, i don't bother to answer").

I do think (but i'm sure many of you think i'm wrong), that just like other things, when SL is properly used by RL businesses it could be an even more fun thing... and also; isn't rl businesses a kind of necessary evil ?

Allthough; maybe it would be better you can really choose to visit a rl company instead of being suddenly confronted with it... and maybe you think better of RL company's when they come to your expectations...

I also had a lot of feedback about the question "What do you expect to find at a RL businesses' base?". I know many of you rather saw the question "What do you want?", but it would be too hard to turn that into statistics... at this moment one of the only things making sense to RL companies...

Thanks again for all feedback.

Coming in admitting to be a Journalist gave you two strikes to begin with. Most Journalists have done nothing but sensationalized hatchet jobs in regards to SL. . To answer your questions, RL companies may be a necessary evil if LL wants the money they can provide, but it doesn't change a thing for me. I am not interested in anything they may have to offer, and will not vist any area they may set up in world, no matter how benign or subtle it may be. They are of no use to my enjoyment of SL, anything they can provide can be provided by a resident business.

The racing sims (it was Pontiac, wasn't it?) and the Weather Channel were / are good. I used to go to the Weather Channel quite often. I haven't in a while (I haven't had the time to, recently), so I don't know if it's still around.

Was that the one with the tsunami? It was fun setting it off on people who didn't know it existed, but were hanging out on the beach.
