Massively.com drops SL coverage

It seems that Massively.com is no longer covering Second Life - the last news item on the site is from July 23rd, and some staff has been let go. It's a shame to see it go - while I wasn't crazy about the stream of stat updates, some of the blog entries were pretty interesting. I wonder what site will become the primary SL news source?

I noticed that they'd gone dead too.

Second Life Insider used to be my first port of call to see what was up with the grid afore logging into SL (after perusing Snapzila for places to visit). They weren't a good fit with Massively. I sure hope they come back in some shape or form...

I doubt there will be a new one. The Second Life project no longer provides news that people are interested in reading.

I was pruning my RSS feeds last week and noticed the condolences posted in the comments of Tateru's last stats post when I realized the feed hadn't updated for SL-posts.

I guess (from inference of information gleaned elsewhere) AOL's blogging network is getting hit pretty hard across the board with cuts unless you're on a blog that you can easily imagine getting money (WoWInsider, for instance, who's posters seem to consist 75% of morons, but I digress...) you're probably not gonna last long.

moo Money could probably give a decent explanation if someone wanted to ask her.

Corporate blogging never made sense to me. You're better off, if you're a blogger, finding a good group of similarly focused writers and writing your little brains out and keep your advertising/revenue in-house. You're seeing this happen here and there, but not like you should. A lot like SL giant corporate interests eclipsed the amateur market in a field designed for amateurs and it's taken years to cool off.

And on the flip side of things, the new Metaverse Tribune has chosen to cover WoW...I find that odd, because WoW is not a metaverse. Well...I guess it could potentially fall into the definition...but we all know what the term metaverse means. WoW is a MMORPG...not a metaverse.

Wiki says: The Metaverse is a virtual world, described in Neal Stephenson's 1992 science fiction novel Snow Crash, where humans, as avatars, interact with each other and software agents, in a three-dimensional space that uses the metaphor of the real world. The word metaverse is a compound of the words "meta" and "universe".

OK...so maybe it is a metaverse. But I'd be much more comfortable lumping into the MMORPG group. Leave metaverse to apps similar to SL.

I miss SLInsider and the SL coverage at Massively - it was at the top of my SL-related iGoogle column.

Not that Bill Gibson came up with the concept long before Stephenson, or anything

I enjoyed reading it also, though it became weighed down in a constant stream of entries that were just the same info rehashed over and over, so it became harder to find actual stories of interest. Maybe SLNN.com can pick up the slack, I know it is in the process of rebuilding after changing owners. The Shanti thread here has top billing right now on the site:

Shanti Is Coming: Wut is Shanti?

I would actually really like to see that site succeed.

Was to be expected when they abandoned SL Insider and joined a website about MMOs -_-

Lumping SL in with WoW, AoC and other MMO crap was a retarded decision.

I agree that lumping SL in with MMORPGs was really dumb. Still, how much big news has been coming out of SL lately? I mean news that would be interesting to people not already in SL? As a platform, it's been pretty stagnant, which has likely contributed to the growing apathy directed towards it. Stability is great and all, and SL is a lot more stable now than it was a year ago, but the biggest thing we've seen beyond that has been Windlight.

Content creation tools haven't changed much at all. We've seen a parade of corporations come and go. We've seen a new CEO step in to parrot the same company line we've all heard over and over by now. What passes for "big announcements" these days seems to be awards handed out for rationalizing SL, and impractical control devices.

Maybe I'm not looking at this the right way?

I guess I can start reading Massively again. I always thought the SL coverage on Massively was completely out of place.

My massively feed was only for their Second Life category stories - you can add Massively feeds by category.

The SLH, or the Bottom Feeder Gazette as I like to call it, at one time represented a marginally entertaining contrarian view of SL, and you could on occasion find some interesting topics there. Those days are long gone - it has no relevancy anymore and is a shell of the shell it already was.

Once the SL coverage stopped being interesting, all that I was left with was 'here's news about MMOs you're not playing, because we have an entire blog devoted to WoW still!'
