Exclamation Items stolen directly from your inventory?

So, I know a few things:

- This post is far too emotional and partially created without thought.

- This might possibly not be new.
- This might possibly not be a good idea to ask on public forums.
- This is a good way to cause panics.

Even though, just to figure out a few things, that actually DO scare me:

How the heck did somebody manage to steal No Copy items directly out of my hands today? This is something I have never even heard before. Of course, I heard about Copybot and all those other pesky little buggers of tools you can use, but.

Well, let me just tell you the story.

Friend and I went to a huge shop to check out some new stuff they had. Played around for a while, until some random girl avatar walks up to us, insulting us out of the blue. Really, that of course makes you shrug first off. She popped in and out a few times, telling us to wait. Really, sometimes it's a good idea to take your own advice and just leave when somebody annoys you. Of course we didn't. Wanted to play a bit with somebody who seemed like a random jerk.
When she came around the last time, she had a few of the things attached we had on. Not so much a big surprise, figured she was completely insane and went get the items herself. Anyway though, there was one custom made item nobody except for my friend had in there, AND my shoes in the exact same configuration as I had.
Granted, sounds like a simple copybot style tool. But, when we went home and checked, we first got problems attaching items when we tried to detach/reattach things from out inventory that we had on earlier, although it only affected prim items.
Then the scary part began: The few No Copy items we had on our bodies just... Disappeared. They were gone, didn't come back after clearing cache (and actually disappeared only after that completely after being "not able to rez").

So, there's my question: Is this just a very, very strange thing happening to the two of us, is this a known issue, does anybody know how this works or why in god's name I never heard of it before? It's not like it's just a copybot, it fucking STOLE the items, which I deemed impossible up till today.

I'm not a freebie place, dammit. Get off my items.

Trust me, I'm not a troll trying to get attention. I do know when things I did build myself disappear.

Of course, I'm not clear on the disappearing either. It's just a very, very strange thing to happen and that's why I'm looking for answers. It can't be that items just randomly disappear for two people at the same time after specific happenings.

if you built it yourself, you should have full perms.

"I call it purring, not growling," said Alice.

"Call it what you like," said the Cat.

Sorry, when I said "not possible," I wasn't accusing you of making this up.

I'm sure that something happened, but it's really not possible to "steal" items from your inventory. Assets don't exist in finite copies. There's a reference to a pair of shoes in the database, and all other instances of those same shoes are just reflections off of that entry, even if they're no copy or not.

It could be some other exploit that bugs up other stuff, but my suggestion would be to file a support ticket with as much explanation as possible (and as little hyperbole and speculation as possible) so they can investigate it.

sounds like you pressed the release button and the asset server had dinner.

Okay, you're right about me being still pissed about it. Might have done with some less effort in writing a story right here. I really wanted to check first on this issue, then go on to reporting it with maybe some more information about things.

I do know how a database works by the way, but that's where the problem started for me to really get an idea of what happened. Even if it copied the prims and textures - why would it mess with the database?

I didn't really intend to send a support ticket after most harm was for me having to redo the final version of my item and buying new hair, I sent an abuse report and then poked JIRA, but, to be honest, I didn't want to make a post publically and I'm not even sure if there is a way to report bugs quietly. Which I might have wanted to look into, too. Beforehand.

Anyway, I know there's at least a few people here who know SL way better than I do, and having a talk with those before reporting anything would surely help a lot. Well, I figured it would.

It wouldn't touch the database, that's my point.

Two people who have been around SL for a while now, pressing the release button without noticing at the exact same time? Nopes.

Then again, asset server hiccup. How big are the chances that two people lose items at the exact same time? (Seriously. I've got no idea.)

well, I do know a behaviour when textures which are no copy gets moved from inventory.

But as far as I can tell, you can't move an object from the inventory of one object on the sim to another. You can duplicate it, but from what I can understand, there are no permissions from the asset server level. Basically if you ask for a UUID, you'll get served with the item.

There's no point in speculating here. If some third party tool is able to fuck with references in the SL database itself that's a glaring exploit that serves no one in SL by asking about it in a third party forum that few SL developers look at.

There's no point asking us, we don't program SL, we can't tell you anything beyond what we know about its infrastructure, which says the situation you've said is impossible.

But admittedly SL is swiss cheese, so that's my point in saying: don't ask us, report it.

BUT I can assure you if your report begins 'OMG SOMEONE STOLE ITEMS OUT OF MY INVENTORY' like it did here, you're probably just going to be ignored by LL.

Seriously, calm down. I know I overreacted on the OP. Still, there has been quite some important information in it for me, as I hadn't really taken the asset server issues into consideration completely so far. It seemed too far off to happen at right that point.

That's the reason I opened this thread. There is more simple ways to explain such things than I know of, and I can only properly report anything after I looked at it myself.

Still better to dump your thoughts here where you get facts beforehand and beat up properly after being too emotional than in a report, eh?

Doesn't matter, Derrits, I think a few Lindens read SLU anyway. The question comes to task as to whether or not they actually bother investigating this further.

You do need to make a paper trail. Your OP was fine; I've seen people react worse in similar situations.

Uh, I'm "calm," you seem to be the one on edge mistaking simple responses as "beating up."

Maybe you need to calm down.
