I never heard of one until AOL did it then. I guess they have always been worthless then

How many times are companies going to re-invent the "you can chat! with your friends! With coolio avatars! Hey look, you can wear hats! Isn't this great? Isn't this GREAT IN THREE DEE?"

And then that's it. Oh, but this time you can play trivia! Great. Three of my friends are on Coke's VW, ten are on ESC's Flockamaphone, and four are on Lively. Plus three on Metaversed, five on Koster's world, ...

Oh, and your friends also have to be logged in at the same time for any of this to happen. So you have to be online at the same time to play dressup. Otherwise this whole thing doesn't work.

Seriously, am I the only one that's seeing this?

BTW, the WebFlock avs don't look really 3d. They look like spriteified 3d avs. This has been done before. Over ten years ago.

I hate to rain on people's parades, but fucking seriously. Where is the next SL competitor, and not the "OMG THIS TIEM U CAN HEV KAT EARS LOLLOOLOLOL"
The thing is, yes, that is all true. And no, this is not the future of virtual space at all. But I actually rather like this endeavour simply because it is not pretending to be anything else. It isn't pretending to be an SL-killer, it has no illusions about that - it is simply about selling individual 3d chat spaces (presumably with some added scripted bits) to companies who only want that.

It keeps them out of SL basically, when otherwise they would come in, pay a couple of people's rent for a month and then bugger off and give a few interviews where they say that SL is a waste of time. That isn't a business model, even for MDCs, which is perhaps why so many have gone to the wall and the Sheep have moved away from it.

I'm sorry I haven't read this whole thread but has anyone submitted a motto/tag line for ESC's WebFlock?

It seems, simple two or three word phrases that sum up a company or product is the trend these days so, unless it's been said before, here's mine:

WebFlock - Get Fleeced.

True... it was AOL going flat rate that put the nails into Compuserve. AOL had a large reach in those days so they could get to areas that many small ISPs couldn't.

"I suppose so," said Alice.

"Well, then," the Cat went on, "you see, a dog growls when it's angry, and wags its tail when it's pleased. Now I growl when I'm pleased, and wag my tail when I'm angry. Therefore I'm mad."

"I call it purring, not growling," said Alice.

"Call it what you like," said the Cat.
