Because aside from custom emotes, they're all doing the same thing.

You're not going to see avatar portability because they're all being rendered/created in different ways.

This shit is bananas.

Clearly, the much more important news is that Capcom's secret project, Flock, was just announced at E3. It involves aliens and livestock, so it follows a similar metaphor as Webflock. Behold:

Why won't companies get it...

If it doesn't do what SL does, and more...we don't give a flying fuck in a rolling donut.

I think the annual fee of under 100k makes it pretty clear that this isn't targeted towards us in the first place.

Right, it's targeted at companies who want to target us.

Still ends up in the consumers' hands, though.

I didn't say that EVERYONE who found the web through AOL was an idiot - but the percentage is pretty high.

I am not surprised. It was a matter of time someone built one of these in Flash.

I have been a Flash programmer since 1998 and with the latest changes they made with Actionscript 3.0, Flash finally became something worthwhile for the rest of the coders out there.

I too want to see it in action. The big question is what will be the major differentiator between this, versus Google's thing and finally other browser plug-in based other format such as UNITY.

Would it be safe to assume that most people who found the web found it through AOL?

And would it then be safe to assume that most people who found the web are idiots?

And then the question becomes - what is one's working definition of idiot here?

Me, I tend to identify with the idiots more than with the dreamers.

No, not at all. Just a big quick influx in the mid to late '90s.

Have you read some of the stuff out there? I worked for AOL briefly, just long enough to realize it was a mistake. I was constantly amazed that most of the users could figure out how to plug the phone line into the modem. Again, not all, but a lot. Anyone who had an AOL account can probably relate.

Oh, those were the days.

I have to give credit to AOL for one thing, they were the ones that came up with the flat rate fee for internet usage. No more being charged by the hour!

You had to work at AOL to have the full concept of what "idiot" is.

I got a massive education through AOL about human nature on the net, I'll tell ya. That being said, it was freaking fun to be there, in its heyday.

Yes, plenty weren't idiots. But the idiots were sure memorable

"I call it purring, not growling," said Alice.

"Call it what you like," said the Cat.

Huh, I never paid anything other than a flat rate, and that's going back to the BBS days... I thought flat rate was more than norm than the exception, even back that far?

AOL advertised itself on an hourly rate forever. Their trial discs came with X amount of free hours before the rate kicked in. It wasn't until easily around 1999/2000 that they switched to a flat fee.

I know AOL had a flat rate since at least Dec 1996. Up until then, Compuserve, Prodigy, and AOL were all based on per hour usage.

The free trials were based on hours, but they were hours that could be used in the first month for free, after that, you could go to an hourly plan or the unlimited.

That is not true - in fact, they were behind the curve on that one. They went flat rate in late 1996. It was pressure from other ISPs who emerged and offered internet access at a flat rate that caused AOL to have to dump their hourly rate and go flat rate. They didn't innovate that one.

AOL can eat a bag of dicks. I've never forgiven them for making me -- that's right, making me -- run up a huge phonebill when I first had internet access.

No, flat rate was not the normal for dial up online services pre-intarweb. Prodigy, Compuserve and AOL all charged by the hour - the previous incarnation of AOL, QLINK on the C64 also charged by the hour.

I worked for AOL in their support when I was in high school, in a remote job - and got a free, unlimited account in return, which at the time was a nice thing. Once they went flat rate across the board, it wasn't so appealing.

My favorite tech support question ever was "How do I create a new AOL shortcut? My cat jumped on the keyboard and deleted it."

LOL that happened to me too - I got in so much trouble. Add in international phone charges, and you can imagine the excitement. IT WAS TOTALLY THEIR FAULT.
