I saw a banner here at SLU that led to this website: https://www.nic.sl/domain

It is for registering a dot SL domain.

Anyone know anything about this? I thought getting Dot extensions top level domains (is that what it is called??) was a hard thing to get approved.

So what about .SL??

well this is an obvious way to step around the ll lawyers on the whole 'we own "sl"' issue.

SL is actually a country code domain name for Sierra Leone.
Though there is no problem registering it for Second Life as well

According to them there is no need for local presence in Sierra Leone to register a domain, so basically anyone can register.

I just got myself www.single.sl, hopefully soon something will rise there, but it is surely operational.

It had nothing to do with that, actually - .sl is a legit country domain. Until very recently, they had no registrar, as the political situation in Sierra Leone is volatile. Someone must have struck a deal with them, a la the .tv domain. It all seems a bit shady, however. Until it is available through regular domain registrars like GoDaddy and Register.com, I would be leery of it.

On a related note, though, .me domain registrations begin on the 17th:

I registered "inworld.sl". It's currently up and running. Registration was fifty US dollars via PayPal. All domain changes must be done via email request but as of right now, the response time for email support is not bad. I'm happy.

Well, it worked well enough for me: after paying for my new domains with PayPal, they started working in less than an hour. Since I did the registration during Sierra Leone's night, I'm pretty sure the process is automated.

Granted, you still don't get a working WHOIS, but at least they do indeed delegate the .sl domain names properly. But... it's expensive, about the same price I pay for registering .pt domains in Portugal...
