Google's Second Life killer?

From TechCrunch here

Google Launches Virtual World Called Lively

Well, this sucks for Second Life. Google is launching a new service today called Lively, a browser based virtual world add-on that lets users create and customize avatars and worlds, interact with other users, and generally have a richer social interaction than is offered by GTalk today.

Browser-based, non user content creating software is never going to compete with SL.

Still interesting enough.

Google has created a number of sample rooms that can be copied and altered, or users can start from scratch and build their own world.
The future of virtual worlds is a non-centralized approach, IMHO. It makes sense to extend the browser as opposed to running a separate client. To treat it as an extension to browsing, as opposed to it being considered a new platform.

I've been waiting for Google pick this up. I wonder if they'll go in that direction.

I'm actually pretty excited about this. It's useless ATM, but give it a few years for eBay, Amazon, and content providers to get involved...

It's definitely casual. LL has a room there now, Pathfinder's building it.

Add and Remove Objects: Can I Create Content?

Most of the avatars, clothing, and objects were created by vendors working for Google. We're also working with a small number of trusted testers, vendors and creative agencies as part of a test for creating custom items.
We hope to enable user-generated content and even more customization soon, but until then we've given you tons of choices from the catalog to help personalize your Lively experience.

So there you go. A place that doesn't allow content creation out of the box is never going to compete with SL. They will always be separate things.

No seriously, it has to allow content creation. There are a ton of things in the catalog with different profiles attached to them.

Sketchup maybe?

nevermind i can't read fast

I just installed it to check it out and.... yeah not gonna be hopping outta SL anytime soon as a Lively convert :/

Takes longer to load than SL if that's possible and the interface sucks completely. It's just a glorified Chat room. Plus it uses that lame ass, download a tiny file which will go fetch the actual file thing and I can't stand that distribution model. I hate opening a port on my firewall for an installer or update program that runs at it's own leisure.

/me reaches for the uninstaller
