FYI.. Macphisto.Angelus and MacphistoAngelus were horked.

So, if someone with that name acts like a real asshat.. just know it is not me. This time..

Edit: Hold off. I just tried a total random name like theleakylikenburgerguyking and it was taken.

System must be glitched.

Well, on further attempts I discovered that it is tied to Gmail. Yeah, I am not one to RTFM. I got MacphistoAngelus because I have that as a gmail account already that never gets checked. hehe.

So, I got it.. threw up an Island.. dressed up some and will check it out later.

I could use my offline sim for my creative side and Lively for my chat side. Money was never a SL goal of mine except to sell stuff to have money to spend in world. I am interested to see where this thing goes and do hope it gives LL a run for their money.

Hrm. I went through and made sure my alts names weren't taken, at least as far as Gmail addresses were concerned.

Well I signed up last night and tossed a room together but I don't think I'll be spending much time there just yet.

Strangley, and this has never happened in 4 years of using this name, BEARintheMorning and several variations of it were taken.

Anyway, the nick is bearinthemorninglively. If anyone happens to know if you can stream your own music in there (not just upload files), please let me know.

Over on the official forums, somebody claiming to be from the BBC asked an SL user to meet him in London to test out Lively.

Meh.

All of my current nicknames are taken. Ended up going with Damanras - the very first name I used for my daman character in D&D before I shortened it.

Also. I'm not impressed. How the fuck do you control the camera?

If you get stuck at "joining room," go back to the Lively homepage, click on the "Catalog" link, and add an avatar to your inventory. Many people are finding that after they do this they can log into Lively rooms no problem.

My problem was being unable to change my avatar once logged in. And crashing. Lots of crashing.

"Call it what you like," said the Cat.

You can also change your avatar name in game, to whatever you want.

Twinity is very much like rose, too, except it has "land". rose is entirely P2P, Twinity has servers you can put your room on, but other than that, very similar. (edit: rose predates Twinity by many years - 1999, and its previous incarnation of Roomancer - a 3d interface for Windows - came out a couple years before that)

Any large corporation can stumble, especially when entering a new market.
I was a member of orkut, early adopter. And I cancelled my account there, and will NEVER go back. Not only that, I won't even join Facebook, I'm that turned off to the whole concept. It's just the latest incarnation of Friendster, and I believe "this fad too shall pass"

I am not a fan of the social network thing, anymore.

I did internal testing for that program after it got gobbled by AOL... and of course its gone now.

I just have little faith in anything major happening from a large company like google, with its fairly abysmal record in actually building social spaces. It'll be free and the support and stability you can expect with free... none at all. orkut was a free flop and I just won't get my hopes up with Lively being an SL killer until maybe a year or two passes... Why?

Because its entirely possible that Google can lose interest in truly developing it further, the same way they did orkut.

Only streaming I saw was Yahoo videos (via the "flatscreen monitor") and they end up on an endless loop.

You can have "music" but it's limited to 512k files.

Youtube streams as well, but if you input the link make sure embedding is allowed by the video host.

I found it amazing that they hit upon an avatar control scheme that was even less intuitive than Second Life's. Bravo, Google, bravo.

My hand is actually still hurting from spending 10 minutes trying to navigate my avatar around some graveyard on a Lenovo laptop with using a TrackPoint while some german with a 30-syllable name like Derdunkelhoffenschlager kept whispering to me asking if we could "sit down" someplace.
