That was Virtual Places by Ublique software. I loved it. It was where Nethermind and I first met ages ago. Everyone got a postage stamp sized avatar, and the program literally became a part of your browser. Quite a cool program, and was very useful for collaborative web development.

Regards,

Its very (very) early days of course, but I'm afraid my initial response was rather "meh".

What I find interesting about all these "SL-Killers" (sic), is that, as far as I can see, they reproduce the "easy" functionality of SL, but never the "difficult": the efficient streaming of a contiguous world in which new material can be added at any moment.

Maybe LL aren't quite as incompetent as people suggest.

ps.
I grabbed "Cale.Vinson.SL" (whats the deal with so many of our names being taken?), and headed to the Linden room. Encountered Tizzers Foxchase (at least, someone by that name), who in answer to a question "Do all you guys work in SL?" replied "I'm a professional griefer. *smile*".

LivelyHerald.com anyone?

pps.
Sorry Flip no idea - it just worked for me.

Ya, I was irked by that...I mean, this is a pretty new applications right?

I tried all these names, and they were already taken:

* Jude.Lawless
* Jude.Law1ess
* Jud3.Lawless

And finally Jude Lawlesss worked...I find that rather hard to believe. I don't think that name is very common...do you?

I can't get in Lively...I hang on 'connecting to room', and it stays that way.

Doubt it. The advantage or regular messenger is, it can sit in the system tray and pop up a note when someone wants to talk to you. That's as unobtrusive as it goes, when you don't actively use it. 3d room web based chat thing on the other hand requires you to keep the browser window open, and when you minimize it you lose the ability to react to what's going inside.

In the conflict between functionality and form, the functionality generally wins.

I run SL in the background, minimized at work. When I get an IM, hear someone typing, or want to do something, I hit alt-tab...bring it up...take care of business...and minimize it again. I do not consider this a hassle (or obtrusive) at all...in fact, it's quite enjoyable to be able to multi-task like that.

I don't think it would be obtrusive to run Lively (or any web-based metaverse) in the background. You can pop back and forth between windows--I do that all the time (boss is coming! Alt-Tab!)

FYI--I do, however, find IM text popping up from my task bar annoying--unless it's a really good friend.

I noticed there are a TON of bots in Lively right now. I bet they're grabbing up names like domain name squatters. Look at the popular rooms and check out all the data bots... interesting.

I got in (it runs much better under IE, btw) and felt "meh", but yeah, it is in beta and just getting started.

NO PURPLE HAIR?! WTF.

I'm Flipper.Peregrine.

So much more convenient than a lightweight multi-service text chat client so far, huh.

Eep. I run SL in the window, usually positioned in a way so the web browser on top of it doesn't hide the 'im received' notification... so i can keep eye on them. But if it's large application like Photoshop or Lightwave, i shut SL altogether. Would drive me bonkers to force myself away from work every few minutes just to check if there's some potential issue to address. I already take ages to get anything done, with extra concentration/thought train breaks like that ... just eep

Michael, I was having the same problem. It appears they're having issues, but I did get in eventually after a bunch of tries.

My question about this is - can I promote my show in there?

Is it possible or even worthwhile to build another BitM "virtual broadcast location"?

SLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWW TAKES FOREVER TO LOAD

SL at its slowest is a bullet train compared to what I saw. I'd like to see Lively develop but daaaaamn I can't stand that slowness.

eh, i don't like the avatars so don't see myself spending any time there : P
They even make IMVU avs look realistic in comparison, sadly.

Seeeriously. That plus the lack of user generated or really much costomizable avatar content left me feeling pretty "meh" about it.

It's an IMVU killer, not an SL killer. And even that might take a while.

I did grab my name - marianne.mccann - just to be on the same side.

First tour of Lively:

1) Takes longer to finish loading than even the most lag-ridden sim I've ever visited

2) Women are only allowed to get "female" clothing --the selections are filtered based on your gender assignments, so no embarassing cross-dressers allowed.

3) Two different men thought it was great fun to just come up to me and start slapping me around. Body slamming them in retaliation was interesting, but overall the encounters -- compeete with gaspy woman noises from my avatar -- was distasteful and difficult to avoid without simply logging out. Which I did.

Sanitized, rigid, and mundane.

Scrubbed of any copyright infringement and/or naughty bits. So just like There and IMVU.

This is of course if they ever bother implementing it...
