Unfortunately "Windows Vista or XP with Internet Explorer or Firefox" covers 80% or more of the computer using world.

I suspect since it is from Google there is at least hope.

What do that majority of people give rat's ass about..? 3d chat rooms simply doesn't seem to be it, given their track record so far... so... what?

If I were LL I'd be declaring red alert about now, but I'm sure they're all poo-poohing this. The thing that LL doesn't get is that the vast majority of people don't give a rat's ass about scripting or sculpting or open source or disruptive technology or this or that or any other computer dork notion of LL's vision where the technically competent will pwn the world.

Read the Linden Bible, Snow Crash, and pay particular attention to the description of The Black Sun. Hackers as rockstars. They got rich building a technically cool place and there are ten thousand avatars outside the door wishing they could get it, where only hackers and their invitees are welcome. This is the narcissistic Linden view of the world. You'll find their brethren on slashdot. The world is full of people Just Like Us (techno dorks), and those who admire us because we are so smart and cool and build such 133t things.

Google is going to stomp your ass into the dust, and the shareholders and the jocks and the bean counters and the bimbo box drivers and the cool people and the socker moms aren't even going to remember you.

It's going to take more than code to turn SL into a social space. Start now.
Except Google's content has been exhausted already, whereas you'll never see everything in SL.

People get bored of customizing the same dolls over and over.

People keep acting like this is a finished product - they have said they have selected content during testing. Google has embraced user created content in Google Earth - I can't imagine they won't here.

If connecting to a shared 3d space becomes as easy as playing a YouTube video, and as ubiquitous, that is a game changing concept. Google has just fired a major shot across the bow here. It does not directly compete with what SL is, but I won't bet on it not flourishing and evolving quite rapidly into something else entirely.

I think it could become something very big.

I really can't stand "walk with the mouse" interfaces though--just hate them. I imagine they'll improve that in the future. I also can't fly, jump, walk off a piece of land, or do pretty much ANYTHING that I can in ANY 3d fps game--it's more like an old school RPG interface and controls.

I hope they get human characters soon that don't look like they're either anorexic or bobbleheads.

Overall though, I think this is a good start. Though, I must admit, Google software isn't always the best at customizing though--take Google Talk for instance--it's ultra-basic and you can barely change the appearance of anything in it, there are very few options--hardly any more options than there were when it initially was released, however, Google Earth gives quite a few options and customizations.

Is it really? Look at the text-based online messengers. They aren't exactly utilizing web browser window, but require separate software. This software until very recently had to be specifically downloaded and installed. But it didn't stop millions of people from acquiring that software and utilizing it every day, and make it extremely popular means of communication long before the clients were turned into part of default OS install. I think there's one point that can be derrived from it -- if in the environment where both text messengers and 3d messengers were provided through the same mechanics one failed and one took off... then one simply didn't hold people's interest or there was other considerable barriers of entry, than just the requirement to install the receiver software.

Communication devices work extremely well without the 3d component, and often with no visual component whatsoever. If the 3d chat room concept is truly so revolutionary and competition squashing and that one thing the majority of people give rat's ass about, then it's not SL that should be shitting bricks... but the online messengers, Skype and such.

But you know, i don't quite think they do.

Yes, despite my earlier comment about the people just wanting to kick each other in the head, I had random people dropping into my room and actually talking to each other.

items that you "buy" are in your inventory, they are avatar specific. Not all objects/meshes can go on each avatar.

I spent a few hours in there tonight and created a few rooms for the heck of it. The self animations are hilarious. That, you do by right clicking on yourself. You can also interact with other avatars by right clicking on them. Pattycakes is funny, kick is to, ask Steve and Dirk, they got it in the shins

I see this as taking over, in the future, IMVU, not SL, as SL is on a different playing field.

When they do allow user content, I am sure it will be modeled after the There.com approval process.

The ability to embed a room into web page brings on a different meaning, from the general user to a business. A business could easily set up a room, embed it into their website and have live support, customer service, q&a etc...

A program like this will replace the text base chat programs. Eventually we will be saying goodbye to yahoo/msn/and the other text based chat programs. It is a chat program, not a game. I would use this as a chat program and easily uninstall my yahoo and msn.

It will be interesting to see where this goes in the future.

Lively is going to fight with IMVU and the other 403 startup companies doing the same fucking thing. And sucking up tons of venture capital (really, read the Virtual Worlds Weekly I'm sure most of you get spammed in your inbox. At least 100 million in funding is sucked into virtual worlds every week)

None of them, none of them COMBINED, comes close to SL's feature set.
Myspace is long gone? Everyone is on Facebook? Sheesh I wish someone told me...and my dozens of friends, and the film companies I work with, and the photographers, and musicians...I'll have to let them all know that no one is using Myspace anymore...they've all gone to Facebook.
