i think the ability to imbed the client into a browser is fundemental for sl to go mainstream. there has to be a continuity between websites and second life sites for a smooth experience. this is particularly important for sl to rise above a leisure space and become a full on extension of the www.

Tess
Not directly by users - I don't allow HTML in posts. The Youtube embedding is handled by a plugin, and I can add support for various embedding types if I want through that, or through BBcode. Hmm, I should see what it looks like embedded.

Well, the whole "not working properly" thing rather did it for me. Twitter is full of people saying "wtf this keeps crashing" and that is certainly my experience as well.

Even from the bits that I saw before it crashed - I was able to buy a few things and change a few options - there was nothing beyond the usual There/Kaneva/etc clone, and I am sick and bloody tired of that sort of "micro"payment closed-content dress-the-doll buy-our-hair concept. It is like yet another platform game in the late 80s.

I expected better from Google to be honest, as I've been told that they make an effort to hire imaginative and competent people, but perhaps that is a rumour, or perhaps they haven't put them on this project.

It doesn't work for me, spends about 20m minutes saying 'joining room' and nothing happening...
Am I meant to wait? Am I being impatient?

the next big thing that comes along that allows people to enjoy their virtual fisting will steal the audience. I don't see people being loyal to SL/LL long term.

Since it was just announced today and since lots of folks are getting off work/school and just hearing about it I suspect it will be mostly unusable this evening. Also there are some server outages in the SF Bay Area due to the heat. This could also have an effect.

Honestly, nobody cares about Seesmic either, apart from the vlogging crowd, and even they have gone off the idea.
I also think you are mistaken about Seesmic and the LA Times seems to agree...

Well it's clear that Google is going after a market that SL has had trouble reaching... the teens.

Get'em while they're young, and they're your s forever, I believe the old saying goes.

Smart move, but the adults are going to tire of this after half an hour (if that long) and move on.

Anybody remember Orkut? It started out with such promise, and failed to deliver on that with mismanagement and ineptitude (sound familiar)? At best Orkut is a niche player, with large numbers of users in Brazil and India, from what I've read.

I went to the LindenLabs room, and found someone by the name of Pathfinder punching everyone. First griefing in Lively.

I tried going to the LL room, froze in place, and got molested by someone who kept trying to kiss me. I managed to make one snarky remark, then my computer froze and I had to hard reboot. I'll try again but you may see me appear and disappear. I am brenda.archer.1

I tried going to Cristiano's room through the embed and it was loading... then it froze. I tried closing the browser, which froze, and then did a soft reboot, and then my computer decided the disk was in an inconsistent state and it ran CHKDSK, which it hasn't felt the need to do before. I am now officially nervous about Lively and not going to try again.
