The character design is horribly stylised. I don't care much for an avatar where the volume of the head is twice that of the torso.

Most of the avatars, clothing, and objects were created by vendors working for Google. We're also working with a small number of trusted testers, vendors and creative agencies as part of a test for creating custom items.
We hope to enable user-generated content and even more customization soon, but until then we've given you tons of choices from the catalog to help personalize your Lively experience.
This might be a smart move. Have pro content creators creating nice looking content, and then, when the bar has been set, opening it up to everyone to create content. Of course, in this case I'll be surprised if it's possible to create content within the program itself. Looks like it's all made externally and imported.

One thing I noticed from the video was avatar facial expressions. I really, really hope that if LL updates the av mesh, that facial expressions are something they add to the mix. Like, having the avatar mouth move when typing or using voice.

There were less stylized avatars in the video. Still fairly stylized, but with less cartoonish proportions.

BTW, I'm Beezle.W in Lively, any other name is likely a Korean knock-off.

Flip made an awesome comment on that article which I feel needs to be quoted

@Raskin: Second Life’s creator, Linden Lab, is a profitable company that’s got an amazing amount of press and attention over the past few years, growing exponentially. I would call that an “utter failure”, would you?

This won’t compete with Second Life. I have a two question litmus test for what a Second Life competitor needs: (1) Can you get naked? (2) Can you be something other than human? Until there is a virtual world where the answer to both is yes, you’re talking about ones without enough creativity allowed (think Disney) to attract the same market that Second Life does.

The most hard core SL users are very creative types who like to look on the VW as a blank canvas and don’t like Disney-like restrictions.

Regards,

-Flip

The reason I am sitting down in the pic, is that while I have four animations I can do, including "Sit", sadly, none of them are "Stand Up"...

Glad I got a comfy couch, I may be there a while.

Can you be a Compy dinosaur hopping around cutely with a chainsaw larger than your body? Can you make a simulated sailboat and sail it past people's houses while spurting gore from your bloody stumps? Can you make something spontaneously in-world based off of a whim? No? It's nothing like Second Life then, sorry.

I guess any program which lets you be a 3D person and wander around without any specific gaming function means it's GUNNA KILL SL TO DEATH OH NOES!!!@!

Your head volume is considerably larger than the entireity of your body.

Not yet, but keep in mind that Sims from The Sims 2 weren't able to get naked for almost a week after EA released the game. And if you take a look at Beezle's avatar a few posts up there it is clearly not human. So I think if we are going to eliminate Lively from competition with Second Life we need look a bit farther. Keep the spirit of Flip's words, they are certainly in the right spirit, just extend the concept a bit

I went into the LL room, it was a tower of huge headed av's. Not sure I consider that "fun".

You're speaking for 1000 users who want to make stuff... what about the millions who just want to use it?

Don't be so smug just yet....

SL truly sucks for people who want to play and socialize, it really does. Everytime I do an SL workshop to train our faculty to use SL, I see this over and over. The UI could not be worse....And many of the things we've accepted through years of use make zero sense:

SIT to ride a vehicle like a Segway?
or Worse have to WEAR a vehicle?
Stand Up button's location makes no sense
Chat button has no text
Communicate button? like what's that??? as opposed to chat?

Overly complex fragmented, strange search and its categories...

What's up with PICKS of a person displaying when you search for their name in the new search? Why is that so important?

the list goes on. If you look at SL from an outsider's point of view, half the functionality, and half the UI makes no sense.

The orientation island is terrible, worse than ever because they did not update it when the UI changed in one of the recent updates.

One of my students kept trying to hula on the orientation island but he could not find the hula animation in his inventory or activated gestures list.

....

I will stop now. My message? We're screwed in terms of new non-content authoring users....

One thing on our side is the strange anime look of the avatars in Google's brave new world.

How about Primtionary (I think it is called)? Where you try to get your teammates to guess things like movie titles with prims much like Pictionary does with drawings...

Unless your application allows impromptu creation and manipulation of 3d objects so quickly and easily that the process can be a visual guessing game I think Second Life is the clear winner.

Fear my giant head of doom:

It definitely is an IMVU killer - it remains to be seen what this will pan out to be, but LL should be concerned. The ability to embed rooms in web pages and such may prove to be a killer app, especially if there is user creatable content ultimately. If anyone can pull this off, it is Google. Scoff at it now, but it is pretty damn impressive all around and will only get better.

On the other hand you make terrific points. One of the best things about Second Life is the people and Linden Lab has no copyright on interesting people. As a social framework Lively could well be the better. And the Second Life UI is desperately bad. As ugly and dysfunctional and unintuitive a mish-mosh as I have ever had the misfortune to have to use. Not that Lively is all that terrific from what I have seen so far.
