Question Where do humans hang out in SL now? (Particularly voice chat?)

When I was big into SL roleplay, I was very anti-voice chat because there were too many ways it could break immersion (shitty microphones, obnoxious griefers, weird/random noises and sound clips, etc.).

But now that I no longer RP, and also now that I've experienced the bizarre chaotic wonder that is VR Chat, I find myself WANTING to meet people to chat with in SL. BUT WHERE THE HELL ARE THEY?

All my old haunts are gone. Info hubs seem weirdly hard to find in search? (And the ones I do find are mostly ghost towns anyway... also I saw a thread here saying voice was disabled on a lot of info hubs?) Whenever I search for popular places, all I find is bots.

By the way, WHAT IS THE POINT OF BOTS IN SL ANYMORE? They make the Places search completely useless, and I immediately leave any sim that is clearly unpopulated by players. The highest-traffic sims are all either live music places (which suck for voice chat) or "AFK sex" sims that are packed with bots on poseballs. (Also what in the fuck is the point of this? Are there actually players who have poseball sex with NPCs they know are bots?)

Okay, I'm rambling/mourning, whatever. Sorry. I just wanna know where I can find actual players in Second Life these days? I had a blast jumping in and exploring last couple years but this year I'm having a terrible time finding other players to just hang out with.

Unfortunately, once Discord got big, Voice chat in SL was almost eliminated overnight.

Not that they switched to text chat or anything. now the voice just happens on discord where you can’t hear it, so people who aren’t in SL can still hear, or they can be in different sims, and well, eventually they just don’t log in anymore at all. that’s my experience anyway.

It’s very rare now. The only places with consistent active voice chat are welcome areas, and there is nothing of value in those places, just trolls and cliques.

Then when VRchat itself came around it took even more of the few voicers that were left.

I get the impression a lot of people just chat in groups now.

My SL families use voice all the time, but that doesn't help you out.

I have no idea, sorry.

At the club I'm on the staff at, voice is usually turned off but for some regular events it's turned on and we have some DJs on the staff who prefer to have it turned on during their sets.

People do use it when it's active and I get the (maybe mistaken) impression that they are pleased that it's only active at (known) times when there's a staff member present to ensure it isn't abused.

Aw, I'm kind of disappointed to hear that my experiences might not be unusual.

I hadn't even considered that other tools like Discord might have eaten into the chat user base. I can see the advantage of being cross-sim (and even working while logged out of SL). But some really fun and serendipitous things can happen when it's just avatars in the same virtual space together hanging out within earshot.

Racers Island always has voice on, except during a race. Then it's turned off during those 20 minutes or so.

The rest of the time, including during demolition derby, voice is on.

You don't have to race to go there. A lot of times, there's people just milling about, either chatting, working on projects, goofing off, or playing table games.

We are a zany, raucous bunch, yet we can still have intelligent conversation.

Maybe give Racers Island a try?

I could never use SL without voice chat, but those are the absolutely one place you never want to have it turned on (or visit, ever, period)

That’s not indicative of voice chat.
