Please help me learn of how many subcultures there are in SL

Off the top of my head I know of these subcultures or subgroups:

- Plain human
- Gorean
- Tiny/Dinky
- Fairies
- Chibi

- Furry
- Mermen/merwomen
- Avian
- Steampunk
- BDSM

I bet that this is not even scratching the surface of how deep it goes. Please enlighten me.

How may participants constitute a subculture? Second Life, if nothing else, facilitates crossover roleplay to the extent that this solution would have to mapped to a multi-faceted grid by preferred appearance of self and others, decorative setting, philosophical inspiration(s), focus of desire(s), purpose(s), back story(s), et cetera. You'll have to establish a rigid set of comparative parameters in order to enlighten yourself.

I'm surprised there is a subculture or subgroup that is fairies there as I only found my way into Furry and Tiny/Dinky and haven't noticed actual fairy avatar gatherings anywhere even though I do know of Elves as a possible subculture or subgroup there. However, it seems I find elves (and possibly fairies) a bit more on InWorldz.

What do you mean by "sub culture" or "sub groups."?

Your list sort of seems like categories of avatar persona types rather than what I think of a cultural sub groups. cultural groups. (sociology perspective) To me "cultural" groups in SL could include :

-German, French, Japaneses ... speaking communities
-I would include fashion oriented SLers as a sub culture within the larger SL community
- education, science history oriented communities
-griefers are a sub culture
- religion ... there are communities of practicing Christians, Pagans, Muslims, Hindu etc ... who are active in world.
- people who represent themselves as (non sexual) children

and more ...

Avatar types also include inanimate talking objects (a walking camera), non speaking realistic animals, robots etc.

Depending on how you define " sub groups", the list could be very very long

Bikers as in bicyclists? Because if you mean bikers as in motorcycles, most of those people are wannabes. Not all but most. And they have no freaking clue what MCs are really about.

This is in stark contrast to Goreans, who are the authentic, real deal

Send an IM for the walking camera. I made it as a joke for those NO CAMERAS ALLOWED places, and now I am a subculture. Might be a few days though.

Cyberpunk
Goth
Vampires (Believe it or not, not necessarily goths, and goth does not automatically mean vampires)
Anime

lol!

I've been away for a while, but I would even divide Goreans into multiple groups - the pure roleplayers who don't consider themselves real Goreans in RL, the RL lifestylers who do, the people who are really BDSM (believe in SSC and equality/consent of the participants), and so forth in many gradations of belief.

Also unrelated, two more subculture examples, Petites and Mermaids.

And any one person can belong to groups representing any or all of these. I'm in Gorean groups, gay groups and gay Gorean groups. It's not like RL subcultures where time and expense force people to choose one or two main interests in which to participate. SL has lots of dabblers and tourists, that's part of the appeal.

Did anyone remember to mention Furries? Another vital RL subculture.

It might be good to subdivide between RL subcultures in SL such as Furries and Goth, and online subcultures that have taken up in SL (Goreans, for the most part, and gamers such as Warcraft), and pure SL subcultures (such as our homegrown fashion community).

Don't forget the SL cows that have some kind of milking program! I ran into several on a sim one time & they gathered around me yelling & begging me to milk them & that they were overdue for milking! haha And "NO!" I didn't stick around to milk them.

Exactly! Criticising folks in SL for being "posers" IE make-believe is to miss the point by a country mile. Of course it's make believe.

Also about Goreans...you reminded me of the late 90's. So, so many tacky web pages of "real life" goreans, in their trailers (not exaggerating) dressed up like conan...

Thats hilarious.

There really is a niche for everyone.

I think I saw someone asking around about a horse group once. Like not "furries" like, horse avatars running around in a group in a field doing horse things horses.

I think they may be several.

Given how powers of two go, I'd say we're surprisingly few posts away from the point where the number of identified sub-cultures exceeds the average concurrency.

A "subculture"s existence in SL is a bit like internet porn. Rule 34 applies.
