Rezzable charging to visit their sims?!

Second Stindberg: Visit the Rezzable sims as long as they are still there

Rather alarmist blog title, but I have to wonder if this is a good idea.

A guy I never heard of, charging amounts I'm never going to pay, for access I don't need, to sims I've never been to, and have no apparent interest in seeing...

Why do I care?

If I want to experience being ejected, I can just go visit the Goreans again.

Well, it's their sims, they can do what they want. I've already seen the ones I cared to see anyway. I personally like to stay in my own sim, so no big deal here; I usually don't like exploring in the first place. It's too bad for other people though if they start to charge for all sims. Many can't pay since they're too cheap to spend money on SL , or won't pay as they are too cheap in general.

If it's money they need, they could get some of those sim creators making more stuff to sell, or just don't open a bunch of sims you can't pay for in the first place.

Anyway, whatever.

$199L is a bit steep.

Why don't they do the tip jar thing?

Living in SL is a lot like living in NYC: I never get out and see the tourist sites, even when they're just around the corner (or a TP away).

If I stumble across a great build, or get dragged there by a friend, I'll usually leave a healthy tip. But paying upfront, before I've seen something (no matter how greatly heralded by others), is not something I'm inclined to do.

It's really high quality apathy.
Perhaps I should charge for it?

The Rezzable sims are nice an' all, but I don't care enough for them to pay per visit, whether it's a one off payment or not.

There are plenty more private island sims in the sea. If I wanna explore, I'll visit those instead... and chances are, I'll buy something that's useful to me, if they host quality stores.

I don't get it, sell something like everyone else in SL to pay for your sims, you are supposed to be the shiznit builders and all.

No one pays upfront to see something in SL. Even well known clubs can't make that model work.

I'm bit puzzled with the way they chose to implement that... doesn't SL already have built-in mechanics to 'purchase a pass' to otherwise locked parcels?

Rezzable's business plan always involved making money from their sims, first by attracting a following with creative content and memorable branding and then developing ways to profit from the attention. They are a business after all, not a charity.

Presumably the HUD model would be to allow repeat visits. But micropayments (hello, 7Seas fishing bait) might be a better alternative. I'd be much more willing to pay a L$25 token fee to visit a sim once than L$199 for repeat visits that I may never make.

So, basically Rezzable got together and said "Hey, let's make this place a ghost town!"

The rezzables do have items for sale, however, many of those items are overpriced for what they are. Perhaps if they lowered the price of their goods they'd sell a higher volume, removing the need to charge people to visit. I know I'd buy a lot more of their merchandise if it wasn't so costly.

Just a thought

Have you noticed the number of "well known clubs" and shops that have been closing of late? And as for selling things to pay for a sim ... doesn't that business model leave us, in the end, marveling at the architecture of shops (yeah like a really pretty Walmart)? I'm just wondering (hoping) that there's another option?

Well that is why most people will tell you, unless you have a store of some kind attached to your club, it is never going to be more than a personal project, it doesn't create much revenue, people do it because they love it.

I mean, I understand the concept, show everyone how great rezzable is then start making small charges. I just haven't seen such a model work even when people want to go, like to a club, let alone to see something they may have never seen before.

That said, older users like me may well spend a few hundred linden for a pass, I really doubt others would though.

Charge people to get in to buy over-priced stuff they don't want or need. Yea that'll work.
