Do you own a private region?

I don't...but those private regions advertised on the SL website look mighty tempting to get. But damn they are expensive!

Yes.
It's shared 3 ways but it's in my name.
Rentals pay about half so it's not too expensive 3 ways.

I suspect if you asked this question 10 years ago you'd have had more positive answers in SLU.

Nope. It'd be nice (had one in OpenSim) but they cost far more money than I could ever spare.

It could be as cheap as 20 a month and I would still need to consider weather not to subscribe based on my income and budget.

In other words, no.

Used to. I kept it for as long as the two businesses housed there (mine and a partners) were making enough to break even on its costs. Once that was no longer the case I debated renting out parcels to make up the shortfall but given that the shortfall was mostly due to me not having the time to keep pushing out new products fast enough to maintain the business volume I reasoned that the same lack of time would make me a bad landlord too so I sold it.

It certainly is convenient though, to have an entire sims resources to support business, workshop and home and to have absolute control over the "rules" in place plus the better support access. I certainly wouldn't rule out owning one again if circumstances permit.

I have a couple. Mostly due to my crap personality, I feel it's the only way to have people around that I can try to get along with.

One I use as a home and personal sandbox. I offer very low cost rentals to people I like so I can maintain a sense of proximity.

The other is something I'm a bit secretive about. I just hope it benefits others for what it is.

As for the expense, I'd say I'm exceptionally lucky and I get what I want for a price I'm willing to pay.

If you do consider one, have a plan that you're sure to follow through with. Otherwise, there are plenty of existing hangouts and sandboxes which can fulfill most wants.

I rent a homestead. I would love to have a full sim, but my budget doesn't allow for that. My home only takes a small portion of my sim, the rest is open to the public, which includes my store, my club, and several areas to explore and hangout. I like having my own sim and being able to redesign it from time to time depending on my mood.

Just curious on those running OpenSIM regions. What are you using to run it?

I tried a cheap VPS, I used a regular VPS for a bit, I have done a Raspberry Pi a few times and used a regular extra PC some.

It always comes off as... Buggy.

I pm'd you what I use. VPS is generally a bad idea though I'm having decent luck with one. Better to go with a cheap dedicated server like nocix or kimsufi; but even those have potential issues (I don't like that nocix doesn't appear to offer newer ...more secure... distros for Linux).

I've got a quad core lga 775 with 8gb ram running it right now. it's running win7. but it's my home connection and not happy with that since the stupid clients give the ip away... not figured out a solution yet.

I don't yet, but I'm open to the notion. Probably just a homestead, as I wouldn't be using it for more than visiting friends and suchlike - I wouldn't need the extra of a full sim.

Yes, for a few years now. My group all splits the tier so it comes out to cheap for everyone, but everyone all gets a lot more to play with than if we were paying the same amount for mainland or renting a parcel somewhere all alone.

It's a great way to do things if you have mature friends who all get along. I don't think any of us could justify paying for more land on our own, but having a big place all together has revitalized SL for us.

I am guessing, that the introduction of AWS, that will ultimately result in low cost land rentals for all? surely?

Nope. The most I ever owned was 8192m2 of mainland which then took ages to sell when I wanted to offload it.

I wouldn't mind renting a full homestead sim in the hopes of opening my own adult beach, but I just don't have the time to landscape it and set it all up.
