I guess I'm one of the folk who don't fit on the survey chart, because:

I run a club, which makes a hole in my bank account.

I build houses, and I'm lucky if I make L$5,000 in a year - or two!

I sell a few things a week for between 10 and 100 Ls, so I'm not rich or nothing but it does help towards my SL rent.

I have my own homestead, so I lose money each month. Since that is my entertainment budget, though, that I would spend either way, I don't really consider it a loss.

I have a club on my sim, and I DJ there once a week. I don't have any other events because I don't have any other DJs or hosts yet. So, that gives me an average of around $300L per event. Tips for my sim are very few and far between.

I have a store, in which I sell houses and a few other home related items. My most popular items are an old wood sign post, which probably nets me maybe $2000L in a year. Next would be calendar creator tool, which is a big seller between October and January. That's where I get the most money, probably around $10000L over the year.

All in all, it just goes to help me offset my entertainment budget, so it still comes out to a loss in the end. I have never made enough to even consider cashing out.

I make textures (and not very much money). There isn't really an option in the poll that covers that, so I selected "I make home/decor items", which seemed to be the closest.

On a side note, in order to be useful textures have to be sold with full perms, which makes me laugh hollowly when I see people twisting themselves into knots trying to protect their precious, precious creations from teh evol copybotters.

I make a few fun toys which I give out as entertainment or ice breakers. Many are heavily scripted, which I often make full perm/open source,
.
Customers scare me, and I can't commit the time to make it a real business. But it is a fun way to meet & entertain women

Me too. I voted on 'I offer a service'.

Sometimes I make enough in tips to cover my virtual pets addiction though so that's something.

None of the above. I put lindens in the game to upload my own shit or buy other ppl's. Like Trasee, I write it off as an entertainment expense.

It's money I'd be spending on smokes or beer or drugs if I still did any of that.

My art shop is my main thing, but I'm not "known" so picture sales vary from instant tier covering splurges to tumbleweed. I have multiple incomes in SL as a backup. I have an alt on the side selling breedable stuff and the odd gacha. I've also sometimes rented exhibition space and stalls when I had space. It just takes the pressure off my art stuff till I'm more established

I cover my tier and a bit more each month. I've not had much time for SL marketing and really spending time in world, so that's about my minimum now. But I have a fair few products now. When my shop was just starting it felt almost pointless uploading to marketplace because the sales were so rare.

I do Homes and have for 11 years. My RL has taken over for the main part so I only release once or twice a month these days, but I still love creating things/learning new ways to do things so I keep going! I am starting to move my focus more to mainstore releases as I really enjoyed recently moving my sim and setting up in a new space. To answer the original poll, it pays but if I really worked out the time cost/benefit including the years of learning involved too, I don't think it would be sufficient for a living wage in a big city unless I worked full time on SL and a lot of hours.

I still think if you want to make the money it has to be clothing (e.g. Blueberry) etc.

The friends I made along the way are the real benefit for me, and weirdly I talk to most of them via social media versus SL these days!

I didn't put how much I make in a month because honestly, I'm lucky to break even, though at least I managed a year from the few good months I had at the beginning of the year.

I have a club which I need to open that costs me roughly $30 a month [but see above] and two shops; one makes a steady trickle, though nowhere near how well it did at the beginning [I started late last year] and one sometimes does okay but usually its mostly a lot of upload fees.

But I make accessories, decor, have dabbled in clothes with minimal success.... and am really beginning to think SL and me making money will never happen.

I don't know if 'make' is the right way to go about looking at this. My preference is to look at the net profit as the costs of making the income can vary quite dramatically.

Back during the adult content fiasco, I met a lot of other adult content peeps who were quite well known and they were only just making tier on the island that housed their store. ($295?) so they were doing all that work for the fame, as they were just breaking even.

So, someone who is making $1k pm from purely marketplace sales of scripts (no upload fees) will be better off than someone making the same money but has a full region to show off their wares.

swings and roundabouts really I suppose but the net value gives a much better indication of just how well someone is doing rather than gross. but i suppose it's how you define successful in the end. I think anyone who is still actively engaged in trying to flog their wares and has been doing it for a while, despite LL's shenanigans is successful. God knows, every time I have an urge to get back into it, the sane part of my brain threatens to poke me in the eye with a pen because it will be more pleasurable.

that's my tuppence anyway.

I'm a DJ. As of right now, I have 10 events a month where I get a small stipend ($750L for a two hour set), plus tips. Since I live very simply, I'm doing OK.
