How can I record something in SL and save as animated GIF?

Because I'm offering up interactive toys for the upcoming fundraiser, I want to record them in action and convert to an animated GIF to post with the advert in the other thread.

I'm a raw newbie at recording stuff, so it needs to be pretty simple (I do know about staging in SL for screenshots so don't need that).

Is there something out there that will record directly to animated GIF as well as YouTube friendly video? I'm not looking to record anything longer than 10 seconds.

Thanks.

I’ve had friends make SL gifs with Gyazo. Won’t help you with YouTube. I’ve used FRAPS in Overwatch for YouTube, it can’t be too different for SL.

Do you need it to be Youtube friendly so it can be watched directly on Youtube, or were you thinking of using Youtube as a repository that you'll then use for MOAP purposes?

If the former, I would probably use Gyazo, then store the resultant gif somewhere like Imgur. You can then direct link to the file for your in-world needs.

If you need to upload to Youtube, well Gyazo does have a save as mp4 option (or it did). Alternatively, you can run with screencasting software. Use a program that allows you to specify a region (Screencast-O-Matic for instance) and work from there.

I don't know of anyway to directly record from sl to animated gif. More usual would be to record and mp4 or avi and convert it. If you download bandicam it will make an mp4 for you. Then you can go to ezgif.com and convert it into an animated gif. For this example I flew around some random place in sl, then used ezgif's tools to cut the first and last couple of seconds out, which were showing bandicam's start and stop screens, and cropped the movie to get rid of the menus and bandicam ad logo.

Of course it all depends on what you're real aim is. Mostly animated gifs are no substitute for mp4s if they are going to be more than a few seconds long.

I guess I'm out of the (animated) loop. I hadn't heard of Gyazo. That looks like the solution.

I like ShareX, you can set it up to record and automatically upload 30FPS webms with no length limit that I know of.

On a mildly related note, does SL support animated gif yet? There would be so much cool that could be done with that, including making animated clothes.

Not directly, but if you can store your gifs somewhere, you can just link to them using MOAP. I've done it this way in the past. A couple of years ago, I made some kinetoscopes for my Burn 2.0 build. The screens were direct Imgur links to gifs I'd edited from SL screen recordings.

Kind of, you can do animated textures. They aren't quite the same as .gifs since their quality will often degrade with the more frames they have due to resolution limits and how they work. Animated textures on clothes have been done using this method though.

My only problem with Gyazo is their slogan: Share and save, like a ninja.

I don't know anything about their saving skills, but for sure ninja's do not share!

Maybe they mean slip in and use it like a ninja before marketing forces us to turn it into a piece of feature-laden bloatware that no one uses anymore? Because really, every vid capture program needs a messenger app, custom skins, and social media auto-upload and browse and "if you watched this, you may like this..." recommendations with auto-share so all your friends know you watched an explicit Barney sex video.

But it gets marketing excited. Exposure, you know.

Yeah I've seen that little script thing that basically plays frames out. I wish they would just add native support.

if you're using windows 10 all you need is something to convert mp4 video into gif... the "windows 10 gaming console" can capture all kind of stuff.

As long as you keep the direct links on hand, you can still access older captures. Still, this largely the reason I wouldn't use gyazo to store gifs for in-world use. I'd record them with it but copy the file elsewhere.

What platform(s)?

ISTR macOS can record screens within QuickTime Player, possibly within a selected area, but I've not actually tried. From there to GIF and so on would be easy.

Whats with all of these annoying subscription models. Why isn't there an option to say, pay Gyazo $20 once, then just have everything store locally. I don't need or want their cloud storage or their monthly plan.

This isn't the first software I've encountered like this. At least Gyazo is offering some service, I've seen quite a few that are just flat out subscriptions for software that never touches the web.
