Are you an oldbie who has come back to SL?

Wagner James Au has made an interesting post to his New World Notes blog, about a trend first picked up in the Second Life subreddit: former users of SL who went away, but have suddenly returned to the platform.

New World Notes: Second Life Usage Seeing a Resurgence of "Oldbies"?

Have any of you noticed this yourself? I myself fall into this category. I took a break of several years from SL, and only started to spend more time in-world early this year. I have found that the whole mesh avatar body/head thing to be a sort of revitalizing force in SL. You can now create a stunningly aesthetic avatar if you choose, which in turn has led me to spend more Lindens on hair and clothing and shoes.

Someone mentioned this trend on the SL Subreddit recently and no idea if it's related but I have noticed an increase in store traffic online and in world, and I have not made anything new in months.

I don't think there's a resurgence, at least from my own experiences. I can honestly say that 80%+ of the residents who take a break from The Wastelands and Second Life, end up coming back at some point. I even have "seasonal residents".

It's always at about this time of the year, that there's people who have taken long breaks from SL, but end up logging in and hanging around again. Not to say that this doesn't happen during the rest of the year, but that it's just far more common at the end of summer and beginning of fall. I think it has to do with school/work/vacations. I firmly believe that it's just part of the ebb and flow of the SL seasons.

I started going back in-world a few months ago. I have run into at least 10 people I knew from before who also took a multi-year break and are now returning.

Personally, I find the whole mesh business very very expensive.

My main has a huge friend list from the deep past. It has been mostly dormant. I have been surprised lately by seeing people log on that I haven't noticed in a long time. But I only log in long enough to check IMs and notices, so I might be missing a larger pattern.

I started my extended break in 2011, and have been on it since, only poking my nose in every once in a while for special occasions, like SLU parties and such. I'd like to come back, but this whole mesh thing is rather intimidating. I'd like to build again, but I really doubt anyone will buy pure-prim houses anymore. I had been hoping my finances would improve to the point I could buy Lindens so I can rent and shop again, but that just isn't happening. So I'm just not sure I'll ever be back again like I used to be.

I sort of lost my drive and drifted out of SL a while back. However, there has been a resurgence of mojo and this time it seems to be sustaining itself well enough to actually power a return to inworld existence

I've seen the same. I didn't know about this trend, so I was rather puzzled by what I was seeing. I guess this might in part explain it.

This is actually EXTREAMLY common. I don’t know many people from 2006/2007 who have been active the entire time with no hiatus. I mean, I have, but I’m kind of nuts.

It's too much work to relearn the whole platform. Seriously, I felt like a total noob and didn't know how anything worked anymore.

Also nuts. Don't think I've ever been offline for more than a week since 2007.

I have seen the return of quite a few people in the past few weeks who have been gone for a year or more, it must be the season for it.

This is me.

I'm intimidated a bit by the meshy stuff too. It took me hours just to work out hands and feet, let alone an entire body and head. I'd have to devote hours and hours of watching tutorials etc to even get up to speed again.

I did log in awhile back after being offline for a couple of years. Wandered around some deserted areas and rearranged the pillows on my skyplatform but that's about it. But I haven't been able to let go of my premium account. Every time I see the installment come out of my credit card for $20 I wonder why I haven't cancelled it. But I just can't seem to. Emotionally attached to Circle and all her stuff I guess

Well I still have all my stuff, much to my amazement. But I wouldn't pay to keep it at this point, even though it would be painful to let it go. I don't own land or a house or anything, anymore.

I still have one of those old flying thingamabobs. I do things in a way that is three years out of date at least, and I might look ridiculous but I feel like I can finally call myself an oldbie so all that newfangled stuff can just get offa my lawn!

I'm more or less in the same boat. There have been ebbs and flows in my in-world engagement. Periods when I'm only logging in every few days and even then, only briefly. In the ten years I've been here though, I don't think I've gone longer than a week without outside circumstances forcing the issue.

Pretty much the only times I've ever been offline for extended periods have been because of a massive hardware failure of some kind.

I never left, but I put off getting a mesh body for much the same reason. That part wound up being less painful than I thought it would. In fact once I got rolling, it turned out to be pretty easy.

I'm still debating on getting a mesh/bento head. There are some stunning results out there and a lot of makeup options are drifting towards applier only. But I've been around long enough that I have a TON of system makeup for just about any occasion and I have a generalized fear that even with my shape sliders the face might be altered. If that happened, it wouldn't feel like me.

I'd say the biggest bonus of having a mesh body is to be able to wear skimpy or see-though clothing that fits without clipping.

And OMG the shoes.

Flight feathers.. yeah, scripted to provide just enough upwards impulse to counteract inworld "gravity" ... I still have one too. Of course it never actually gets used but somehow I never get around to deleting it. Still got the first motorcycle I acquired inworld too, and the calabash pipe that I laboriousy put together out of prims to mimic the one I smoked IRL because there weren't even sculpties then, let alone meshes..

We should seriously put together a SL antique mall where the youngsters can come and look and be all "What the fuck even is this thing? How does it work?"

Some sort of museum of pre-sculpty everyday items would be pretty cool. The irony, of course, would be that to get a decent land impact, you'd probably need to run said objects through one of the scripted tools that will generate a collada from prims.

IKR..

We'd almost need to get the lab onboard to create a region that could handle it. Its a bit of a thread hijack but c'mon folks.. what items out of your inventory would you put in there?

Eh, I never really left. I've had my premium account since 2005, and I still log in semi-regulary. I can tell when my rl is stressing me out too much because I spend a lot of time in SL being someone else. I have logged in at least once a week for the past 12 1/2 years.
