The moment i read someone having disclaimers like that in their profile, i write those people off as people i will never talk to.

Same with people with disclaimers about how they "won't stand for Drama" (usually the biggest drama llamas have this in their profiles).. and disclaimers about how if i "mess with the SLfamily they will hunt me down in RL and make me pay".

All eye rolly-things that lead to me just never talking to them.

This might be right but I'm not completely sure about it. It is a user's written confession that they do not intend to abide by ToS, for whatever that's worth.

My bot used to post it's chat logs to blogger, I would get angry comments about abuse reporting and emailing LL security people to contacting goverence team members directly to get me banned from SL.

even pointing out the fact that they have no control where the logs get posted because it's outside their scope, the persons just did not care, SL CONTROLS ALL THE THINGS. I wish these type would grow up.

Most of the other posts here have been about starting a conversation without reading a profile. Hence a bit of the feeling that you're running up against a brick wall.

though if i don't know who's iming me, i usually "hi" straight back (as it's almost always a fucking single word greet as if they haven't even read your profile first...that's another rant..) before reading their profile as they take enough time to respond back i have time to go through their profile and guage who they are and what they're likely to be after.

I had this in my alts profile for a while:

This is a disclaimer to void your ToS disclaimer whether you read it or not. And if you try to void my disclaimer of your disclaimer, then I void your disclaimer voiding my disclaimer voiding your disclaimer. I further make it impossible for your disclaimer of my disclaimer to void your disclaimer able to void my disclaimer.

NOTE: This does not include posting of chat to social media sites or other websites. Posting such logs on web pages, emailing them, or printing them out and posting them on utility poles in the "real world" -- are all actions beyond the scope of the Second Life Terms of Service. ; while that might be illegal, but those laws must be enforced by the proper law enforcement agencies.

I think for a long time I had a thing saying that I saved logs, because otherwise I was likely to forget something important. But there is a huge difference between saving a chat log and sharing it.

Saving does not violate anything.

Should've taken that a step further; a script that generates a comic with random panels using the transcript to create humorous non-sequitor comics.

I saw one using IRC years ago, funny stuff. Then again, the panels were from Azumanga so that probably helped with the funny.

A little of topic, but I have a real bias against people with no profile at all, no links, etc, ... Better a bad profile with stupid ineffective disclaimers than a blank nothing.

I've met people who are some years old, but have entirely empty profiles. No profile picture, no 2nd Life bio, no picks, no anything.
And yes I avoid these people too. Just like I do avoid people with those disclaimers, and that bs "mess with my SL family, and I will...".

It's what you do with them after. Like saving them for a "rainy day".

It's really mind blowing how some people will keep dragging up the past and have the audacity to re-write history.

Well. That explains why people ignored my avatars. That is what happens when you don't know what to put in your profile(s).

It's also one of the minor reasons I stopped logging in. SL isn't much fun if no one will talk to you outside of viewer support.

Some kind of a picture is usually a good start.

You could also try talking to other people first? About stuff outside of viewer support. Instead of waiting for someone to reach out and talk to you first.

i know it can be hard, but, you'd be surprised how many other people are also just "waiting around for someone to talk to them first".

I spent 10 years doing just that. Even in RL it has always fallen on me to be the one to make contact. Every. Time. That includes immediate family. If others can't be arsed to initiate contact once in a while, then why bother. It takes two to tango. If I'm such an insignificant part of your life (general yous) that you can't be arsed to be the first to make contact with me once in a while then what's the point?

As I said, it was a minor reason why I stopped logging in.

Yes! So many people are all waiting around the same areas wanting to talk with somebody else, but they're all too shy/scared to make the first move. It is a little sad, and thinking about it is a reminder that deep down, other people are more similar to ourselves than we may realize.

As for myself, while I frequently interact with others in whatever local chat may be happening, I've rarely ever initiated IMs with anyone not already on my friend list. Part of it is that I largely keep to myself and don't take particular interest in most people I see.

Another part is that during my entire time in SL, I've had no shortage of complete strangers IMing me first, especially when I'm out and about. I can't even count the number of times their opening IM was related to something in my profile, but even when camming around events looking for items that are both modify, and don't use insane amounts of VRAM (such a rare combo these days!), I get folks IMing me.

SL is like an exaggerated version of RL for me in that respect, I've had no shortage of attention, which is perhaps a bit unfortunate since I don't really want to keep talking to them for as long as they want me to half the time.

To clarify this a little bit, what I'm saying is, if I have to do all the work to maintain a friendship or any other kind of relationship, then it's not a healthy relationship and I want no part in it. That is what I have come up against in SL year after year. I had to do ALL the work to keep friendships going. It's simply not worth the pain.

It doesn't need much, WolfEyes. If you just put something in (I think it's ) the Bio section, you're good to go. A little hint of who you are. I suggest not going with "I like Piņa Coladas, getting caught in the rain", but to each her or his own. Doesn't have to be a big deal. Most profile pervs check Picks, too. Mine are horrifically outdated and I keep telling myself I need to update them. Oddly enough myself ignores me.
