perhaps second life should be renamed 'zombie life?'

this is quite an interesting article for many reasons but primarily because SL helped one of the founders get through uni
https://www.theguardian.com/business...artup-softbank

I did laugh when i read this bit

Quote:
After meeting Whitehead, a Liverpudlian who bolstered his student funds by making virtual weapons and selling them on the now defunct world of Second Life, he launched Improbable in 2012, months before graduating from university.
I wonder if linden lab know that sl is defunct or perhaps it has morphed into some kind of parallel universe zombie life? More likely it's just the guardian being true to form and it's just sloppy journalism. After all, weapons? but hey ho if it's true, then SL influenced the start of another interesting business.

I think the Guardian used to have a Second Life Podcast years ago that I listened to, that or it was a tech one but the host brought up SL almost every episode.

Anyway, I am always pretty surprised at just how busy SL still seems to be. It's also still the best at what it does really. Yeah it seems desolate given how empty a lot of the space is, and there are things LL could do to fix that if they wanted to be a bit more aggressive with dealing with Abandoned Land. I mean the neighborhood Linden Homes are neat but why not offer people the option of taking a 512 plot of mainland? Fill in some of the space!

Reclaim swaths of the abandoned land and put in roads, lots of roads. Work on region crossing mechanics. Tinker with water level on interior sims to allow a landscape dotted with lakes.

If they could fix sim crossings, I'd love more roads.

And yeah, adding more water and auctioning off the adjacent land would be a great idea. Water property is always super desirable.

Related, they need to retain control of the water itself though, so people stop building ugly crap that blocks it.

I'd be happy if they simply went back to the "buy any abandoned land for $L1/sqm" again!

I like to refer to Sansara and Heterocera as the 'continents when LL gave a shit.'

There are some nice parts of other continents, but not as consistent. And I've driven basically all of them and do so semi-regularly at a moderate touring pace.

Land pricing is such a joke right now. I went looking around to maybe move recently but ended up not. There was ONE parcel that was really inviting for a good price in a great location but it was much larger than I wanted. I would have bought it, split it up and resold the bits but that would have meant a month of some ridiculous TIER price which would have completely negated any point.

Anyway, my experience

There isn't any effective way to filter or search. Even just being able to open the map and show land sales with some sliders like "Parcel size" because I don't need more than 40xx (and barely that). or Price/meter.

The pricing in general is ridiculously high and many of these parcels feel like they have been there forever. I don't even mean the crazy 1000000000 for 20 m of land plots, I have no idea what up with that.

It all seems to be owned by like 2 or 3 companies, which is kind of lame.

Roll back the buggy hacks they did to block ground level sim crossing into no-entry border parcels. It used to be you could enter some parcels over the border sometimes but would be promptly kicked out. The "fix" was to knock you offline instead and oh by the way it happened even if you were flying higher than no-entry lines.

Roll back the buggy hacks they did to prevent people abusing temp rezzers, and come up with a better check, because a lot of aircraft set themselves temp once you sit on them so they won't be left behind once you get kicked off. Whoops, cross a sim border into a full parcel, and if your vehicle transfers to the new sim before you do, guess what happens?

You know what else might be fun and useful, revamp ban lines.

Like, any avatar can always cross into any parcel.

If "ban lines" are in effect, the avatars allowed in see the parcel normally and can interact. Any avatar that would be blocked by the old system, can enter and travel through the parcel, but can't interact with anyone.

Neither party can see the other set of people, except maybe the parcel owner.

Like the old "privacy zone" proposals back when LL was pretending to listen?

Yeh. Yeh. Not just avatars, though.

If you're banned from a parcel, it's just an empty field, no objects, no avatars, no particle effects, nothing. Nothing in the parcel is sent to your viewer. You're phantom when you're in the parcel and can only interact with the surface terrain. Maybe even render your avatar 50% alpha on your own screen.

That would work SO much better.

Making the banned parcel a field would be easier but it would just exacerbate the current problem with barren mainland.

Someone must have told them, the word "defunct" has been excised from the article.

It might give people a reason to return to the mainland.

Maybe even bring the airfields back.

They need to make sure that it's possible to take your boat/car/plane all the way through any area that looks like that should be possible on the map. This would make for more Linden owned land, but why not? Or individuals could buy it, but only with a covenant that there has to be a passageway.

Covenants mean babysitting and drama, they'd need to treat it like normal. Say, find a few point to point between roads, mark out a roadway. Redoing the default land map for each region probably isn't an option, especially if there are existing residents in the sims, so just land subdivide, smooth the land a bit, pave, make nice new roadside parcels and set up the auctions.

Just doing affordable auctions would help. The last two regions I lived in on Mainland were 50% owned by Governor Linden.

You can fancy mainland up, but you're still left to the vagaries of fate in regards to your neighbors' taste if there's no land covenant describing what they can't do to decorate.
