Bizarre account copybotting avatars, clothing and even profiles and groups

I was around building a bit ago when the SC chatgroup lit up with Phoenix and Sansarya saying they were in a store shopping and an account, YukiBear Inglewood, was copybotting peoples' avatars, but even weirder, their profiles as well as the groups they were in.

I went over to where they were and the person was taunting all of us and sure enough she was stealing people's profiles. A couple of people said she got into groups that weren't publicly open (although she didn't get into mine thankfully) and we mass AR'd the person and the account vanished shortly after I blew her up with my omicron.

But it was pretty weird, especially the profile and group part. I've never seen anything like that before.

Are you sure it was the same group, not a group that looked the same but actually used different letters?

Yeah it was the same group, the people said they had to evict them from it, and she was in the group's chat sending messages.

did you take pictures of the profiles, or at least get the names of the groups ?

Well not sure what the point of that would be since she's banned. But she didn't join any groups I was in, and the profiles/groups kept getting switched out so quickly that we were all trying to figure out what was going on. It was seriously nuts.

Vendetta had to eject her from her private group.

EDIT: She said the person was just there as "Everyone" which is good, because if it could join groups as officer that means it could steal group owned land and objects.

Copying profiles and joining public groups is not surprising. The bots can be made to do anything with publicly available information. However if they can join private groups this means the the LL server code has a serious bug that needs fixing.

And to think stalkers are still doing it the old-fashioned way, you know, spending hours recreating a shape by hand, pretending to be an alt to join private groups, carefully creating a flickr account with other people's snapshots.
This new threat is like the fast-food of internet stalking.

The bot moves on its own. Its user can determine who it will follow and the bot just aims for that person and walks over their direction until they collide. Meanwhile the operator is standing nearby to see your reaction and enjoy their handywork.

In my case when it happened, I've just built a quick plywood cube around the bot, containing its movements. The bot's only method of walking right now is to move in a straight line towards its destination so boxing it up should solve the issue.

After about 5 minutes when the operator couldnt take the bot out of its trap they got frustrated enough to just log it off.

Do they have some kind of chat relay? Because people were talking to this person and he was responding the whole time. Such a thing could be easily implemented in combination with LSL I guess; just a local listener/broadcaster, but it would need some kind of libsl component to make the spoken text come out as white; real avatar chat.

Bot clients don't have to be wholly automated. Hybrids can allow the user to control the movements while providing embedded macros to copy et al.

That was the question that kept bouncing around my head... what legitimate application could there be for this?

I'd suggest filing a jira under the security project for the joining private groups thing. LL need to patch that hole. There are plenty of groups that allow significant rights to people in the everyone role, because they logically assume that only people they trust can get in,since they have to manually invite them.

Very good point. The default 'Everyone' permissions are very weak, but an owner COULD grant full officer permissions to that role if they wanted to.

As most of us know, appearance cloning has been around since the original code was created. Here's a video:

I'm not sure when the profile cloning was added, but I recalled seeing that function in the "TestClient" that came packaged with libSL from at least a few months ago (I've only recently started looking into the libSL projects myself..) I took a look at the code responsible for this and it simply grabs all publicly available info and applies it to its own profile, after that, it attempts to join all the groups in the list, skipping any that it can not join. If there were any private groups that allowed the bot client to join, I'd say that this is definitely a bug on the server side.

All that aside, I can't really see any practical purpose for the cloning function. However, since the whole idea of having your profile is to display your information publicly, there is really no way to prevent it.

I don't think there is any need to panic, the visual cloning is old news, the only thing thats different now is that the profile info is being copied as well, which could be done by anyone, even without the bot. As far as the skin and clothing textures go, well, again, most of us know that there are ways of doing this also, without any bots. While it seems to be a neat trick to some, I can certainly understand that it would really creep some other folks out, including myself.

To be perfectly clear, I am not defending the use of these functions. I think its pretty creepy. I also think that its not really an issue to get into a panic about and send everyone copy-bot crazy again.
