This is the same company that encourages everyone to load an entire Gig's worth of textures onto their avatars, then throws their hands up in the air and exclaims they can't figure out how to get high enough framerates to support VR.

They're not exactly tech savvy people.

This is the very same company which introduced a feature perfect for connecting their userbase with the content and communities they're interested in, then refused to allow it to be used for that purpose.

They're not exactly intelligent people.

This is the company that set out to create a content creation platform and bragged about the fact that they developed the content creation tools without input from anyone knowledgeable about how those tools were supposed to work.

Seriously, is anyone really still surprised when LL does something stupid?

Nope. Lmao.

I genuinely thought people were joking when they said about LL being slow. It's been way over over the time period they said, this is actually hilarious. Haha.

Wait what you will experience when they are up and 'running'.
I predict this is only the first step of the usual LL implementation nightmare.

Damn, with LL one doesn't even need tarot cards.

Do you feel as if things have gone down hill since Philip left, or do you think it's pretty much always been the same?

You might want to check your rose-colored sunglasses. Philip pretty much set the tone and process that has crippled LL since the beginning. Unmanaged development, poor follow-through, disdain for users, grandiose visions that took precedence over what SL actually does do well, poor management for pricing and outreach.

Current management is an improvement, but they're digging their way out of a very deep hole and they're burdened by a lot of extra baggage from the early days.

LL specialty since the beginning:

I blame The Tao of Linden.
Second Life has been (still is) a success despite Linden Lab.

In other news, Second Life Official Site - Virtual Worlds, Avatars, Free 3D Chat has just had a makeover and it actually looks great. Big thumbs up from me.

"Success" is a strong word for it.

SL has survived, and has plenty of enjoyable elements to it, despite Linden Lab's best efforts.

There's no doubt in my mind that it could have been, and still could be, far more successful both financially and in delivering upon the original promise of "Your World, Your Imagination".

Did I miss something? When did the words "Your World. Your Imagination." re-appear?

Second Life is a success because no one has come and made anything better.

I usually think of two main reasons of why, both feel true.

1.) Maybe there's just not that many people who want a fully open virtual world like SL enough to demand anyone to try and compete with SL.
2.) Making a fully open virtual world like SL is hard. And LL, desite all it's flaws, got it up and working. No one else wants to do all that work to compete. Anyone who has arguably made anything better still failed to attract as much traffic as SL does.

There was a period of time where everyone was talking about the next big SL killer. You don't hear of those anymore. SL always won.

Linden Lab might be the worst developer of any successful virtual world.
But they're also the best developer of any successful virtual world, and the only.

It's hard to be the leader.

Maybe true, but how many did they chase away forever in the first minutes / hours after signing up, only by not giving a sh*t to guide them trough the steep learning curve?

How many did they chase away by stupid financial decisions, like the universities?

How many time did they waist on developing that business thingy that in the end at least sold three boxes of it?

They did not only somehow managed to create and run a 'free' virtual world, but they destroyed/narrowed the potential market big time at the same time.

If I recall correctly, not too long after Ebbe became CEO.

To be honest, I can't recall. I couldn't even tell you when it was dropped the first time. I'm pretty certain there was something in the tagline but "Your World, Your Imagination" was missing for years.

Eta: A cursory look through the Wayback Machine would indicate it reappeared around the end of 2011. and that there wasn't really a tagline per se. That's roughly in the middle of Rod Humble's tenure, so I find myself suspecting it was probably Kingdon who dropped it.

Entirely possible, but consider this.

You live in a town with a bunch of taco and burger huts, but no place to buy pizza. Linden Lab moves to town and opens a pizza place, but their pizza tastes and smells foul. They use rotten ingredients and it's pretty clear no one who works there has ever made pizza before. None of them even like pizza.

Despite this, the Linden Lab pizza parlor remains open simply because it's the only pizza place in town. If you're craving pizza, it's them or nothing.

You can look at their struggling, barely surviving business and say "Maybe there's just no demand for pizza in this town."

Or you could say "Well, there's clearly demand for pizza in this town. Everyone in town has eaten here at least once, it's just almost none of them come back except the die-hard pizza fans."

And yet I still feel compelled to point out that the biggest drawbacks to SL are not technical and never have been. Every single issue I can think of that holds SL back comes down to a bad decision LL made, not a limit of the technology available.

First off, is that actually true? I was under the impression that IMVU was actually more popular than SL.

Second of all, when did anyone make anything even arguably better than SL? The closest there's ever been to direct competition to SL are "There.com" and "IMVU".

"There.com" dropped out fairly early on, and IMVU has always been more of a chat room with graphics so it's only kinda-sorta competition.

I still strongly believe that the reason for what success SL has enjoyed is that there's demand for an open virtual world featuring user created content, and no one but LL is scratching that itch.

Some are old enough to recall when they talked seriously of having no SL forums at all, and the barest minimum of any web presence. Let third party sites (including SLU) handle all that. Now, with Sansar, there must be pressure to just let everything SL-related go to seed.

Benign neglect can go only so far. Oz and a skeleton crew keep adding what few features and fixes they can (although most of their efforts are whack-a-mole with geriatric griefers). It's prudent, though, to keep this old platform creaking along -- even including moderated forums -- just to have some revenue stream when Sansar, as most new platforms, never finds a profitable market.

Still, not a great sign that this forums update is stretching on with no new timeline.
ESTRAGON: I can't go on like this.
VLADIMIR: That's what you think.
