Shadows In SL and Stuff

Hot diggidy

LL is working on new features geared towards higher-end graphics cards. These screenshots were taken using a proof-of-concept viewer that had to be compiled from source code.

Techno-babble
Viewer is built from code available in LL's source-code directory (SVN trunk) Under the "shadow-draft" branch. It's super buggy and wholly unoptimized code, so even on my decent machine I get 1-3 fps and a ton of crashes (**ton**)

LL's working on "advanced" graphics options geared towards nVidia "8 series" graphics cards and above. Taken from an sl-dev email list:

"The notable new features in that branch:
- Per pixel lighting
- All point lights enabled
- The cost of a point light is directly proportional to how many pixels
it takes up on the screen (decorating with lots of small lights is
cheap, lights in the distance are cheap, stacking up lights in one place
is expensive).
- Hard shadows from the sun."

Pretty, huh?

Please note:
I won't be distributing the binaries: I wasn't able to build the release myself, and the version I got has been taken down by its creator. If I'm able to compile the code myself, I may put it up for download. You're welcome to get the code and try building it yourself!

Actually you lost me at (SVN trunk). But I am in complete awe of ppl who can understand and manipulate all this stuff to create these effects.

There, I added a little bit that hopefully clarified things.

Looks really slick, a definite step forward.

Just been reading through the thread you posted a link to - this guy at LL is hilarious (davep). I'm not sure he'd make a good peace envoy I can see his point that not supporting the 7 series for this means he'd get less out of these new features but, wow, he's amazingly condescending to anybody who doesn't have really up to date systems. He even said that supporting series 8 should be considered "generous"

Here's a great post from him:

https://lists.secondlife.com/piperma...ay/009930.html

After that the thread kinda devolves a bit into a "what did he really mean" discussion

I think he's got a point though, and I personally love him being almost abusive in making that apparent. Then again I'm kind of an asshole, myself.

Oh yeah, like I said, he's definitely got a very valid point. It's just his way of putting things is hilariously obnoxious. Proper techie attitude

A few unusual artifacts, but still becoming very interesting.

And here is another one, showing that the avatar is capable of casting shadows on itself:

WOW.

"Now, before the over reaction machine spins up and I get an e-mail about an open letter from the cheapskates of the world, this doesn't mean Second Life is going to be GeForce 8 only, just that you'll need that kind of card if you want the absolute best experience. Second Life will still run on that POS laptop your boss let you take out of the recycling bin at work."

....

WOW.

Well, I just got an 8800 GTS 512 so I don't mind ^_^

That said, though, all of this sounds rather expensive, render wise, and possibly something you'd turn off to save performance even if your PC could run it.

And this worries me. I've just realised that one Of my products is suddenly going to start killing people's framerates. Will need to do something about that.

Shadows and reflections both tend to kill a computer.

They're generally the first thing I shut off or set to low even though I have a system that can handle it. But I like having 80FPS and shit.

But it's a laptop, right? Aren't they usually less powerful than desktop video cards? less space and all...

Oh yeah that one isn't as powerful as the desktop version, but it's still good.

My main system is a gaming laptop that's like 15 pounds and has two 7950 GTXs in SLI; that's the very top card in the 7s series.

NEAT! I wholeheartedly endorse this shiny, even if I may need to upgrade to get it to perform decently. I've been wanting shadows for ages.

So...will LL up the amount of intensity we can put on a light source? Because, as it is, you really cannot make a single light source bright enough. For such lights, most people cheat with stacking, already a poor kludge this new feature will make it even worse.
