I like SL women like I like them irl, curvy and full figured. I like a woman who is comfortable eating in front of me and is comfortable with her body.

And, while it's true that excess weight can create problems, overall health is more than just weight or dress size. Compare a thin smoker who subsists on junk food and whose entire exercise routine consists of walking to and from the car, to a heavier person who has an active, smoke-free life, works out regularly, and eats well, if a bit too enthusiastically...which one is healthier?
Might as well tell people on the Titanic they had a chance.

There are a plethora of cases that are unusual. Like a heavy person who eats to enthusiastically and works out - unlikely, but they do exist somewhere.

But you are using 2 extremes as an example. I still say a healthy size 14 is highly unlikely. Now if you want to say take people who work out specifically or are health conscious i would say that it is LIKELY to find a healthy size 14. But that is not the normal or the average in the U.S. of A.

Once you start making people shorter or taller than average of course these things like what is a healthy weight etc. change. But i am talking about the average American who just so happens is overweight.

As Doctor G. just said on her death special. "Obesity is now the #2 killer in the United States".

A size 14 is not obese unless someone is very small in stature.

And there are more heavy people who work out regularly than you might think.

My avatar is not nearly as curvy and thick as I would like her. But you really wanna know why she isn't? Because I do not have the patience to do extensive prim adjustments every to friggen prim every time I want something to fit right.

At the size Lourdes is (which is not big at all). She can't wear no mod boots. Belts require alot of adjustments.

God bless the belly jewelry makers that place the jewelry far out from the tummy for adjustment. Because I had to make a shape thin enough just so I can find the belly rings initially to place them correctly. I won't even get into prim skirts. The day I found a mini skirt with a resize script I think I wept.

I admire Rosie and Sean and all the rest of you sexy plump girls... cause I would have given up in disgust ages ago.

I never said 14 is obese, but 14 can be fat and definitely overweight.

And those heavy people who are working our regularly are quickly becoming part of the 40% of America that is not overweight.

We were talking about size 14 being the current average, and my 'extreme' cases involved a thin and a heavier person, and then you popped up with:

If you don't think a size 14 is obese, what was the point of that quote?

Not necessarily. Metabolism, genetic predisposition, and how much they eat also play a role. I know several heavy people who have worked out for years and, while they're strong and have good cardio capacity, their overall weight hasn't changed much at all. More of it is muscle, and less fat, I'm sure, but they're still overweight.

Hmm, you drew that correlation, not me, I was simply pointing out the fact that obesity is the #2 killer in the U.S.

Being overweight generally leads to obesity.

Also, when i was a size 14, and pregnant. I was obese. And I am 5'6". So you CAN be a size 14 and be obese without being short in stature. I do not consider 5'6" short in stature seeing how the average male is 5'10".

With all due respect Briana, I'm 5'6" and legitimately big-boned beyond my overweight condition that I've freely discussed here, and I haven't been a size 14 since I was a teen and not at all overweight.

BMI is a much more accurate way to assess whether or not someone is overweight than the statement of how many pounds they weigh or what size clothing they weigh.

15 years ago there was no such thing as a size zero -- sizing fluctuates as society's desires and norms fluctuate. As it is, I can buy three pair of pants from three different makers and have two sizes difference between the three of them.

A size 14 woman is absolutely average-sized. A size zero, two, or four is no more average sized than a size 20, 22 or 24.

A couple of months ago I was up to 161, at 5'8" that put my BMI fairly close to overweight. I was wearing size 10 although they do fit better now that I've dropped 11 pounds. I don't think clothes size is the best measurement.

No, that's a myth. She was a 12 or 14 by the sizing standards of her day, but those have changed to the point that she'd be about a size 6 by today's charts.

You know, mentioning that reminded me of the first season of Skins where everyone kept trying to get Cassie to eat. I found it rather clever that she gave away her ruse of how she fooled everyone into thinking she'd eaten. I've known people who were anorexic and even I was fooled.

It really disturbs me when I see these groups and wonder how deeply they've infiltrated our schools and trying to impress not only on the girls, but guys as well. Everyone associates eating disorders with females, but it also affects the male population as well.

All in all, this group is sad. So very sad.

I wish people would stop bringing up Marilyn Monroe of all people when talking about cute chubby girls or whatever. She was certainly not a size 14 when she appeared in playboy and apparently had huge body image problems and popped pills to keep slim, also. Not a role model for the fat acceptance movement as such.

Edit: I brought up the fat acceptance thing because I used to get that factoid from my friends involved in it all the time and it made me so sad.

FWIW, my google fu tells me Buffie The Body is somewhere between a size 10-16, and I don't consider her to be overweight or obese. Thick, definitely, but not unheathy.

I've read this other places too, but according to the measurements given part way down this page, she wore anything from a size 6 to a size 12 by today's standards.

snopes.com: Marilyn Monroe's Dress Size

It's likely that images such as the one you posted were at the lower end of the scale.

Okay, for the slender ladies. We are glad you are slender. I am recovering ED, so this is hard to talk about for me. I am naturally a size 6 and I for the longest time had a major problem with that. I would starve and diet and purge until I was a size 3 or 0. I have been pregnant pretty much non stop for the last 6 years, so my body hasn't gotten back to a size 6, and thankfully I am okay with that (I still have my moments when I am not).

The reason that I like to make my avatar a bit thicker than average is because it is a way for me to be comfortable in my RL skin right now. I am not downing you slender ladies, and I want you to know that. I am happy that you are you. Your metabolism rocks I wish I hadn't screwed mine up with all the bad dieting choices I made when I was a teenager.

Ladies! We need to be happy in our skin. Oh and fellas too.

Thanks for that chart. People sometimes forget that Marilyn was tiny. I mean, she was short. She was my height.

According to that website I still weigh less than her, but if you'd like a contemporary comparison you might want to go with Salma Hayek, who is our height too and is similarly curvy.

I'll jump down and get serious for a sec, something I rarely do. I have a bit of a reverse eating disorder, I overeat and eat rediculous portions, I try to avoid mirrors as much as possible. For me when I look in the mirror I still see that skinny goofy teenager that i used to be, but its like worse, and more characature like. I feel like I can never really be big enough. Ive calmed down a lot on it since I've been out of the military, but with getting off of the legal, and illegal suppliments and injections ive shed quite a bit of weight and now sit at about 185 pounds. for being 6'4'' I should be closer to the realm of 200-210. even though i know im not that skinny physically, its kinda how i feel since i stopped taking the stuff i used too. I'm really not even ashamed of it anymore. Its just the skewed way I look at my body, and my wife and I even joke and call it my "Mannorexia". My wife is disgusted by the "jacked" look, even tho its what I wish I could be, but my metabolism just wont allow it. She loves me and still makes me feel damn sexy so to me thats all that really matters.

People seem so obsessed with how they LOOK versus how they are. I've rarely heard someone vocalizing a wish that they were smarter, better at math, nicer to people, more likeable, etc... but both male and female friends of mine in RL frequently go on about their appearance. (The guys always go on about their height. Dudes! You can't change that now! Get over it!) What a shallow society we live in. It's still more common to make a New Years resolution to lose weight versus be nicer to people or raise money for charity or whatever.

Anyone else find US dress sizes utterly ridiculous?? I can go into the same store and fit anywhere from a size 4 to a size 12. There's NO consistency. None whatsover. It just seems they make things "bigger" or "smaller" randomly to predetermine who wears the clothes. I've noticed some designer places, for example, rarely supply "large" sizes over a 10. I'm assuming so that "fat" people won't spoil their lovely garments. Clothes shopping is already frustrating and I'm close to the size they use for sample sewing. I can't even imagine what it would be like if I gained 30 lbs.

It pisses me off a bit in SL, too, when designers make no-mod prim attachments. Resize scripts don't cut it and just cause lag. Give me the ability to modify my prims, please. I paid for 'em!

Hence why you learn to build and make it yourself. much more rewarding that way and if you stand on a pose stand and build it on your body you got a custom, perfect fitting piece that no one else in all of SL has. pretty kickass imo. But i agree ladies shouldnt have to have feet at zero, waist all the way down and tits up to fit into a piece of clothing. unfortunately sl building tools suck and creators have to worry about content theft because of arseholes.

I used to be a a pixel stick for about a year on SL, without knowing that I was a stick. I chose to make my own shape early on, and thought I had an average build. Fortunately for me I had a wakeup call at Sanctuary Rock a year ago.

There was this woman who showed up, I guess she was a Gorean Panther girl, with an amazing shape, that was natural looking, curvy, and thick in all of the right places. I hyperventilated, my avatar suddenly looked too thin. I panicked, I wanted her, I wanted to be her, I was jealous, and in lust at the same time. I took pictures of her, and immediately teleported back home and went into Edit Appearance where I worked on my shape for hours.

I don't have her shape, I didn't want to max out my Body Thickness slider to achieve it, but I will never look stick thin in comparison to any other female avatar on SL again. I slid my avatar to Pinup porportions, i.e. Jayne Mansfield, Anna Nicole Smith (Playboy era). My avatar is much heavier than my RL body, wears a DD cup size (A cup in RL), and is much, much taller (5'7 in RL).

Those pics on Flickr: "thinspo" make me sad. I'm 20 lbs underweight and feel like it, I can't image feeling that emaciated. It reminds me of that self cutters' site where the ppls posted their bloody artwork, big sprawling cut in letters IM SORRY across their chest etc.
