Thanks for saying that, I tried to go see the pictures but they're all blocked or private now. Like Rosie I've been given more than my fair share of abuse over the fact that my avatar doesn't look like a supermodel. She's high waisted, she's short, and by god she's round. I fucking love her that way. I'm 5'10 in rl, I'm high waisted and I'm round. I'm okay with that and I don't want to be a supermodel there either. I'm all for freedom to do whatever you want with your damn av, but jaysus, there's nothing wrong with not conforming to some retarded beauty standard.

I adore curvy girls (in RL and SL). I think Rosie has one of the loveliest avatars I've seen in SL, and I greatly admire her for having the patience and the courage to make it work.

I have done my best to make my Mocksoup avatar true to life. Tracer and i painstakingly tried to adjust the boobs to boobs, butt to butt, hips to hips (He didn't complain that much). It isn't as good as I would like to be, because frankly I am just not that good with sliders to match RL. Mocksoup isn't as soft as I am, but that is a mesh problem, not much I can do about it.

LOL WHATTT I think I'm already over that whole sl modelling obsession. Yeah another thing about dark skins - I was told to take mine off (for modelling) and I have an 'ethnic' look - not back from the tanning salon 'tan' look. >__< I like a little diversity
I think it's a bit odd to ask a model to completely change her shape and skin tone for a photo shoot. I can see where a small adjustment might help to show off a certain clothing item. But to completely change your shape and even racial characteristics? At that point I have to wonder why somebody is even looking for models, and doesn't just create an alt instead. It seems to me you ask a person to model, either because you like their appearance or think they would compliment your product, or because you want to leverage a person's notoriety. Asking a model to become somebody else seems very silly.

I have been asked to model on several occasions (I didn't accept, because modeling isn't really my thing) and I have to assume it was because they found my appearance pleasing.

If a photographer asked me to change my shape dramatically, or my race, I would suggest they find the model they are really looking for, or create one themselves.

In RL, I am a painfully thin 5'11 beanpole, from a family of toweringly tall, painfully thin beanpoley people.

I eat like a mutherfecking horse, I knock back Guiness every night, I slather stuff in butter, I have mayo with everything; it makes no difference, I can still count every single bloody rib I've got.

Over the years, I've lost count of the number of people, some of them complete strangers, who have laid a comforting arm around my shoulders, taken me to one side and advised me that it would be fine, perfectly ok, if I just ate a sandwich or two, the assumption being that I was some sort of bimbo anorexic.

I have usually managed not to punch these people in the gob. Usually...

What I wouldn't give to put on a stone. Or even a pound, that would be nice. But no, I can still fit into my first frigging bra, people!!!

When I had short hair, I was frequently mistaken for a bloke (from the back.)

Given all this it's not surprising that I don't think being very thin is particularly feminine. I deliberately made Macha's shape with tits and an arse, because I am lacking both IRL. I love seeing avatars like Rosie's, and do a lickle whoop of joy every time I do. To me, it suggests a stronger personality behind the avatar, because they have the guts to go against the grain of what society expects from them.

We seem to have forgotten what the majority of real women look like. Here's a wonderful site (NSFW!) a friend (male and hetero) sent to me - chock full of lovely, REAL ladies.

Enjoy x

Aaaaah yes poor Macha! I have a friend just like that, and even I when I first met her thought she would be confining herself to a few meager leaves at lunch, and then got surprised when she positively inhaled a piling helping of pizza, tater tots and french fries, with a side of fluffernutter sandwich. Yes, this was 8th grade. I've been friends with her since and I've secretly grumped around behind her back about how she can eat two Italian dinners in one day and still see her collarbones, but then I look down and realize I have bewbs. Considering what a foodie I can be sometimes, I'm still not sure if I would trade my boobs for a metabolism like that.

Honestly though, people like you Macha, seem to be who's actually modeling out there in the real world. Elyse Sewell, Heidi Klum, they have metabolisms faster than a small rodent's and anyone who artificially keeps their weight down is never going to make it through the stresses and pitfalls of that sort of life.

Hey... if you have a pretty face maybe you should go to a modeling casting call

I used to be like that (except I'm only 5'5"). I've put on a bit of weight since I hit 40, not evenly distributed, it's all on my belly, and I can't see my ribs any more but I still weigh under 130 pounds.

Again with me it's a family thing. My father, at 71 years of age, is still thin, and fit as a butcher's dog.

Well there was about half a year ago . I think it collapsed in on itself like an anorectic's cardiovascular system on her 11th day of fasting

Sorry, I think I said something vaguely inspiring and well-thought out in this thread before and had to set things right.

I've thought that for a long time, but then I just thought I was being cynical

I notice the flickr site has gone.. I'm sure it's resurfaced with a new name and a lower profile - sadly these things never seem to go away.

/me cannot stand the term 'real women'. I find it hard to top 100 pounds in RL, and whenever someone mentions being heavier as what a REAL WOMAN *should* look like, it makes me wince - am I unreal? Invisible? A child? What?

Whatever weight a woman is, very heavy or very light or all those variants in between, it doesn't make her any more or any less 'real'.

To explain they mean "real" as opposed to the super thin air brushed models that you see in magazines and billboards. Those images do not portray the average woman which is what is referred to as "real".

So unless you are a super thin, air brushed model you shouldn't take it personal.

P.S. Last study I think says the average woman wears a size 14.

OK, long rant coming up. This might get a little tl;dr... just warning y'all!

While I am no fan of these pro-ana groups in rl or SL, you know what? If I were younger and somewhat more misguided, I'd probably join one of these groups too. I've struggled mightily with my weight my whole life- I'm the one who gains five pounds just thinking about carbs. I've been up and down the scale, and my weight has basically ranged from "could stand to lose a few pounds" to "obese". For all the naturally slender women who think that being excluded from the "real women" category is a kick in the teeth, try being told that your weight makes you ugly, stupid, lazy, unfeminine, undeserving of love, etc. I'd be thrilled to have the problems of a skinny woman any day.

So how does this relate to my avatar? Well, for those of you who haven't seen my avi's pic for some reason, Xio is slender. I think she's pretty hot. Clothes fit her! She looks awesome in everything! She doesn't have to worry about her weight! There are those who probably think I'm superficial or conformist because my avatar is traditionally slender and pretty. Those people can bite me. Everyone needs to feel comfortable with their avatar, whether they're traditionally pretty, unusual, ugly on purpose, a shape shifter, whatever.

I understand; and I realise no offence was intended or for anyone to take it personally. I just find the term nonsensical and over-used. I also find the defense of its use confusing, but

Oh I've been repeatedly told all those things (except the lazy part, add a few others in their place like 'anorexic bitch', 'skeletor', 'twiggy', 'disgusting'). Three of those were in my most recent workplace.

I don't think anybody has critiqued slender, lovely avatars. They're 90% of the avatars in SL -- physically fit, aesthetically pleasing loveliness. I'm all for folks living their dang dream -- it's SL after all.

That is crazy. Last time i wore a size 14 i was 8 months pregnant.

You can be a healthy'ish size 14, it is just highly unlikely.

I wouldn't say highly unlikely...it's really dependent on height and bone structure. A short, light-boned person who is a size 14 probably won't be at a healthy weight, but it's perfectly plausible that a tall, heavy boned person will be. And, while it's true that excess weight can create problems, overall health is more than just weight or dress size. Compare a thin smoker who subsists on junk food and whose entire exercise routine consists of walking to and from the car, to a heavier person who has an active, smoke-free life, works out regularly, and eats well, if a bit too enthusiastically...which one is healthier?
