My Mood: | I've often had my shape called "plus-sized". I know it's not - it's just (more) realistic. I've often thought about making a truly large av shape, but shied away for the most of the reasons already stated. As it is, my "realistic" shape pushes the limits of what I can do with prim adjustments and such. Prim skirts make me cringe. Prim boots make me cry. I had to make a version of my shape with thinner legs just for ANKLE boots. I can't begin to imagine how bad it is for really large avs! |

Unless prim attachments are 100% mod -- meaning I can edit linked parts and edit each. separate. prim. -- many of them are unwearable. So, I just don't wear many. I have learned which designers' skirts are easily adjusted or moved to accommodate me, and I tend to only buy skirts from certain places as a result. Some plus size avies have better luck than I do with editing prim attachments. I don't have the patience. Oh, and if boots aren't texture boots with prim bottoms, I won't buy them whether they're mod or not. The only exception is a pair of men's Z boots from Shiny Things that are prim, but they're men's size so they fit me. The photo in Marissa's article of a "fatvatar" swallowing up prim uppers on a laced boot -- if that were my leg, you wouldn't be able to see the prim upper at all. It would be embedded firmly in my calf. Boots like that look so hideous when they are re-sized to fit me, that it's not even worth the effort in trying.

Just because my shapes arent big enough to make you happy, does not mean that I don't catch flack. it does not mean I don't have to adjust prims just as you do. I want people to see you can be a bigger size and still be beautiful..even if its just by adding some curves. I know what its like being big in real life and im happy with my size in sl. that doesnt make your plight anymore important or real than mine. I was just telling the story of my experience, and that of a few willing individuals; people who were willing to try being in someone else's shoes for a bit. and it may not have been enough to get people to fatten themselves up, but it opens up their eyes to what it's like. - Marissa racecourse.

My Mood: | Skirts in sl are made based on a model with the sliders set to 0 in the ass and leg areas. They don't fit me, and even if they are modifiable it's nearly impossible to get the same look as what they were advertised. So, I simply don't buy prim skirts. Also they look terrible when you walk since they can't follow your leg movements, but that's just my opinion. Runway models look like they do because they are basically hangars. They are there to show off the clothing. It's the same in sl, except in rl when we buy an outfit we can get the size that will fit us specifically. That doesn't work in sl without a lot of effort, and a lot of times not even then. Still, this isn't a thread about that, so sorry ![]() |

*I* won't wear non-prim skirts because I find the fit of them so unflattering, even after I've shrunken Ann's hips and butt down to painful proportions.

In RL I am overweight, so I'm fattening up a few of my alts in SL. And of course SisterMary Blister has always been a big, beautiful woman. With a menacing glare and a finger-rapping ruler. ![]()

Interesting that you'd take such a defensive tone in response to my comment, when I was only making an observation. As a matter of fact, I believe I complimented your efforts multiple times. I'm perfectly within my rights to compare the size of my daily-use "fatvatar" with those of your participants. I wasn't critical of any -- I only said that my avie is larger than most of the ones in your article, which is just as true now as it was back in December or January when you and I corresponded. And I believe I told you at the time that you dropped the shapes on me that they were substantially smaller than my own or those of other plus-size avatars who live in the shapes they created for themselves from day to day. Kudos to you and the participants for trying something different in your social experiment. I'd appreciate it if you wouldn't put words in my mouth or try to paint my observations as more critical than they really are. It would be silly to suggest that I thought any exercise geared to evaluate the acceptance of larger avatars in SL was fruitless or negative. It is an exercise I put myself through, willingly, every single day. Why would I try to demean your efforts? No one ever said that your team's efforts were any less important than anyone else's. Perhaps the difference here is, you called it a "plight," and I call it my experience. I don't consider my existence a "plight," at all. And who said anything about one being more real than the other? I'm really confused with your tone, to be honest. Also -- I don't encourage anyone to "fatten themselves up." I think people in SL should have their avies however they are most comfortable. I'm not a fat activist, in RL or SL. My avatar reflects me, in the way I want to reflect me. I would wish the same on anyone. Last edited by Rosie Barthelmess; 06-03-2008 at 07:04 PM.

My Mood: | Because of the direction this discussion is moving I thought I'd bring up the old Linden Lifestyles talk back discussion on the larger avatar topic: » Does Size Really Matter? - Linden Lifestyles - The Unofficial Second Life® Fashion Shopping Blog (Yep, that's right, I've been the poster-girl for larger avs twice now.) |

SL Join Date: June 2nd, 2007 | Does the tool for calculating height and weight mentioned in the article still exist? Or perhaps there's something similar out there? ![]() Edited to add: If anyone knows how such tools arrive at a weight calculation, that'd be interesting to know, to know how much to trust it. |

My Mood: | There is no accurate tool The only calls in LSL (such as llGetMass) to calculate mass just uses the Avatars height (including shoes if worn) - it ignores any other settings such as body fat etc, it also ignores any prims attached to the Avatar - Two Avatars with the same height will have the same mass regardless of body shape. llGetAgentSize can be used to approximate the height of the Avatar but its based on the bounding box round the Avatar, not the actual height which may be higher or lower. You can measure yourself in world using prims.

SL Join Date: June 2nd, 2007 | Ah, thanks for explaining that. Could have been a bit of a shock to have made use of that and assumed it was accurate. From the examples given by people who used it, it sounds like LL used an average BMI to calculate a weight for any given height. |

Stuff to do!
| Actually, there is, and it's pretty accurate at that. I have a height detector that uses a multiplier to detect avatar height based on prim meters, I've found it can be off by up to 0.033m (so far), but it's accurate enough. It's certainly more accurate than the pathetic agent based detection. A friend is working on making it a bit better as well. My Sim is currently down and I'm in the next Sim over looking at the empty water where it used to be, so I have no surl to post. However, if anyone is in-world at the moment I can send one your way. |

Edit Status.
| My "fatvatar" I made is beautiful. I was wearing her the other day when I worked on my build. Hard to find AO animations that work with her though. ![]() My Virtual World: Fat is the new black I wish the sliders didn't get so angular when they create a larger av though :/ |
