OLDEST CLUB IN SECOND LIFE CLOSING HER DOORS!

I wanted to test out one of the new features in the latest RC and so I popped over to a popular club The Edge and received the following notecard. It makes me sad to see places disappear. I still miss the vamp club Lestat

--------------------------
MAY 18, 2008

OLDEST CLUB IN SECOND LIFE CLOSING HER DOORS!

After having been open for over 3 ˝ years, immediately following the Midnight event (technically June 1st) on May 31st, 2008 The Edge will be the closing her doors.

Jenna Fairplay opened The Edge on September 5, 2004 on a small parcel then known as DaBoom and has since become the longest running club on the Second Life grid.

Within weeks of its opening it was listed in Second Life's most popular places, reaching number one numerous times. Starting off small the sim was maxed out at 40 people, often times it was the goal of all involved to hit and attempt to exceed that number so the sim would "crash". DaBoom Radio was created and had DJ's who would stream music to all the club goers. In January of 2006, The Edge moved to its own sim called, obviously, Edge. The sim capacity was now at 100! On opening night seeing over 60 people in the sim was a great sight! The Edge reached capacity in the summer of 2006 with 104 people rocking the sim until it overheated and crashed twice in 5 minutes.

Since its opening, The Edge and Jenna Fairplay have been featured in such major publications as Playboy (November 2006), Wired Magazine (October 2006), and many other books regarding Second Life and Entrepreneurship.

As of this release, The Edge employees over 200 managers, hosts, DJ's, and dancers to serve its guests needs. Over the years literally a thousand or more people have been employed by this Second Life Icon.

Up until the final day The Edge will be filled with its usual events, fun, and laughs. Come on the final day for some of the Staff’s favorite events! Please find the schedule of the final day’s events below!

The Edge Management would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of its patrons and employees for the many laughs, joys, and dreams that each of you have shared with us over the years.

Jenna Fairplay

I'm sad that it's a loss... and for the people that loved it, owned it or worked there, it's the end of a fond memory and part of who they are/were.

I was sad when Lestats, Phreak and even Last Call closed. It was the end to someone's dreams.

Yeah I suppose these things are iconic, but Jenna is... well, I won't pee on the memory.

I remember the rivalry between the two clubs for the coveted most popular place.

I thought Club Elite was the oldest, though it was on the mainland, now on an island.

Lestats was my very first SL hangout. I made some good friends there who have since left SL and I miss 'em all.

I think Club Vogue (I think that was the name, been awhile) was the oldest club.

Does this mean Jenna won't be selling all those freebies anymore?

Interesting to wonder why.

Could just be the person is done with it. Three years is a long time to run something. I ran the Game Show Channel for over a year, with two nights of games a week. It never DID lose its fun and satisfaction factor, but there is only so long you want to do a thing.

Could also be because it's getting harder and harder to be found in SL. And the Lindens seem to practically cream themselves - (QUIET YOU. STOP USING LANGUAGE LIKE THAT. You don't use language like that!) - take joy in making it ever more difficult, except for their Showcase favorites, of course.

And it may be hard to pay tier on the thing. When they started off there were ways to make entertainment pay for itself - traffic bonuses and ratings bonuses, that I know of.

When I arrived, in February, 2005, there had been enough changes that I realized entertainment was not something that could be a going concern; one would have to have something on the side to support it. (I decided to focus on something on the side, instead, cause I liked the idea of building, too.)

Now I suppose it depends on tips and what you can sell on the side.

Then there's just the lifespan of any hot spot. They all have their peak and decline.

coco

P.S. Interesting, also, that I knew exactly which club this thread was likely talking about when I read the title. That right there is an indication of remarkable success.

Well I took it to mean "oldest club that's still running." Even Club Elite was AWOL for a while.

I find this somewhat sad, it was one of the first areas I saw in Second Life, although it didn't exactly wow me . A friend who had been playing for a long while before TPed me there shortly after I started.

I have only been there a few times during my first few days, can't say I'll miss it. I hate SL clubs anyway.

Oh thanks god. Seriously. Seeing her shut that place down is making my heart feel all warm and fuzzy.

It was like a million freebies with price tags screamed at once... and then silenced.

I always had thunk that was in Blue.

Wonder what Jenna knows that we don't.

I for one am GLAD to see it go.

I was in DaBoom when Jenna arrived there as a newbie. I was there before she had a club. And i was there to give her advice on how not to lag the hell out of the sim. She took everything everyone told her and somehow equated that to creating the most lagtastic experience a person could have in a sim they were paying USD to live in. And then she got a wild hair, some sort of brilliant idea at her mental level to repackage and sell -not freebies- but broken perm clothing from 03, stuff that still looked nice - and even stuff that had broken crotch textures.

Oh gosh, she caused so much drama and so many friendships were destroyed by her endeavors.

Good riddance.

Maybe she will leave SL next.
