How to make friends

I decided it is time for me to go out and meet some new people. Make some new friends. But, well, I have no idea how to go about doing that. So, I ask, where do you go to meet people? Is there one good place to go? Do you just green dot hop? What do you do to meet new people?

Well, there's the proper way, and then there's the way most people seem to go about it, in my experience. Because I'm cynical today, I'll go with the latter:

1. Send a message to random people that just says hi. If you actually get a response, freak out and ask them what the hell they want. Ignore them if they paste your greeting back to you.

2. Spam generic "friends" group invites out all over the place. Wonder why anybody could possibly be mad at mass-invites for such a wonderful fun-loving group and tell them they're antisocial.

3. If you buy a product from someone, the merchant is your instant new best friend and doesn't mind getting roughly 40 messages a minute about whatever thought and feeling enters your head on every topic in the universe. Remember, they OWE you.

4. As a newbie, everybody in Second Life you meet is your personal tutor.

5. Send out random friend invites to every individual in your FOV big enough to hit with a right click. Make sure to get mad at anybody that declines. The person with the biggest friends list wins SL.

1b. If they actually are talking to you, go silent for 10-15 minutes, then try to borrow a piddly amount of money (recommended: anywhere from 25L to 100L).

I think the best way to find cool people in SL is through the forums. SL became much more fun after I started coming here.

Join the Forum Cartel, use 'All Search' to find it. It's open to everyone, not just does who post on the SL Forums. I can send you an invite if you like. It's a big group, but still small enough to enjoy the random chatter that goes on in IM. There are people at the Hangout (in my picks) everyday, more at night though +/- 4pm PST to 10pm. If no one's there, stick around, someone will show up eventually.

Check people's profiles to see which groups they've joined, and join the ones that seem interesting. If after a week or two, you don't get any announcements or info, replace it with a more active one. When you are a member of 3 or 4 active groups (that you enjoy), you'll have a hard time keeping up.

I'm not that good at making friends in SL. Most of the times I'm busy with something to notice other people.

And since I understood that offering friendship is something that most people don't like I usually don't, even when I know the person after a while, exceptions made to when I'm in mentor service and need to quick TP that person to a lot of freebie places.

But my friends list, the ones that really matter to me I meet in places I like, most of them in live music concerts or in sims I love (like Botannical).

So I guess if you go to places you like, you really have good chances to meet new people that share interests with you.

And my best friends in SL actually started with an Hi

I've always just green dot hopped, even when I *was* just a little green dot. Most of my SL friends came from such encounters. The other place I meet people is at events of course, real events where people talk and ask questions, not corporate or instructional events where everybody stands around and listens. A meeting to openly discuss <insert topic> often results in private IMs on the subject between like minded, or deeply opposed, people. Some of the latter turn out to be my very bestest friendlies in the worlds.

I used to hang around sandboxes, showing off cool stuff and helping people. But now I make too many friends from spending a lot of time in Ferox, and from customers who like my work.

Mmm, I have met many interesting people since becoming active here in this forum. I have noticed that several regulars host events, which they tend to mention either in the forum, or in the chat room.

As I generally do not travel the grid nearly so much as I once did, such events have become a wonderful way of meeting new, interesting people.

Beyond that, I might recommend the more active role-play communities, if such areas interest you at all. Clubs, of course, though there are so many, yet so few worth frequenting it seems.

Using the search tool to find groups and areas related to your interests might help in finding people with similar interests as well.

Brig, you know I would never ditch the old!

"Make new friends,
but keep the old.
One is silver,
the other is gold.

A circle is round,
it has no end.
That's how long,
I will be your friend.

A fire burns bright,
it warms the heart.
We've been friends,
from the very start.

You have one hand,
I have the other.
Put them together,
We have each other.

Silver is precious,
Gold is too.
I am precious,
and so are you.

You help me,
and I'll help you
and together
we will see it through.

The sky is blue
The Earth is green
I can help
to keep it clean

Across the land
Across the sea
Friends forever
We will always be"

I'm a bit embarassed to say I have a tshirt with that little song on it. It's from my time as a Daisy Leader. My daughter and I never did make it beyond Daisies, however. (Daisies are the kindergarten version of Girl Scouts. I was pissed when I found out that Daisy Troops didn't get to sell cookies, hehe)
