I've met half of my friends loitering around questionable areas or NCI in Kuula. The rest I either came to SL with or bumped into randomly. I would probably have more if I left my land more often, but it's not something I'm worried about, I'm fine with my small group .

What's wrong with the friends you got now?

I met most of my SL friends through chance encounters, but when I first joined up, I thought 'what am I into? Music!' then I found a club that played good choons (Alt 7 being my favourite when there's live DJ's) and I've met loads of cool people there.

Also, this place! I've only been here, what, about 3 weeks? And I've already made some friends out it

Just go to places you find interesting, i went to an art gallery and because the people there all had a common interest, it sparked a conversation... and the rest is history...

Have fun!

I think I have maybe 3 people on my FList that aren't forum friends.

Oh wait, Siyu's here now. Make that 2.

I didn't join the Forum Cartel group, but I sometimes go to the eponymous hangout. The atmosphere is uncommonly friendly and easy going. Otherwise, my friend pool has come from people who were doing what I like to do at the places I like to do them.

In any case, a way to increase the chances of meeting up with current or future friends is to stay put and let them find you. I just sort my inventory, listen to the stream, etc, and usually someone will show up.

Anyone know any fun sandboxes? Those used to be a pretty social experience for me. I miss the sort of zany, sometimes griefy but sometimes creative atmosphere the Linden sandboxes used to have. Now they're just filled with junk 24/7 and are too laggy to move in.

I don't want to go build in an empty sandbox, because if I just want to get things accomplished, without comment or interruption, I can use my friend's land.

Here's an idea, one that I used all the time when I was first starting out.

Go hang out on the Help Islands. There's not only a whole lot of new people all the time, but being an experienced SL'er, you can give them a few tips and help them.

Just don't go as some hawt female avi, or you'll wind up with every 18 yr old hitting on you... Unless you're into that sort of thing.

At least it used to be what you're looking for. I haven't been there in a while tho. It may have changed.

i'm no good at making friends. the friends that i do have i met from sheer luck of finding groups and people that have been welcoming. the only advice i can offer that i've learned is to not let opportunities pass you by. talk to anyone you meet with the idea that you could have things in common you don't realize, or could really hit it off. i've found friendships happen when you don't expect it, and i wonder how many people i've met in passing that could i could have been great friends with, but they ended up getting away from lack of effort on my part.

Dnate, this must be a wind up! A person with your post count asking our advice on how to meet people?!?
From my earliest days on the web I found you don't look for friends. You just find them. Since SL, I have found them whilst shopping, clubbing and exploring. Nowhere is safe from that barrier-breaking, privacy-crushing, ice-breaking "Hello!"
I will chat first .. with anybody .. if we click .. we click!

Yes, but I have also fond in SL that most of the time nobody answers. I am looking for where the real live people hang out.

Some sort of forum interface in SL would help out quite a bit, I think.

Forums are one of the most comfortable and convenient ways to have conversations.

I think a lot of people who play online games (MMOs, stuff like Counter-Strike, etc) spend more time talking on the forums than actually playing the game. Second Life (whatever the hell it is, game or not) doesn't seem to be any different.

Heh, the OTF communities formed in the two splinter groups from the old Firearms Half-Life mod have members who don't know or don't care they're posting on a forum about a Half-Life mod. Good times.

My first grade Brownies won First Place (First Place!!) in the annual Youth Day Parade where we live.

The parade theme for the year was "Friendship." I had them draw themselves - outlining each other on big sheets of cardboard, with their arms slightly out to their sides - then they painted themselves! They painted on their faces and their hair and their little brownie uniforms and stuff, and their name on the skirt. So that you had this, like, life-size, smiling cutout of the little girl.

Then I spray painted them with a glittery glaze (not too glittery, just added a sort of uniform sheen in the sunlight), and tied them together at the hands, with silver and gold streamers hanging down from the hands.

Then my husband attached this now long string of brightly painted cardboard girls holding hands - maybe 14 of them - around the sides of the truck.

And the little girls and I climbed IN the truck for the parade. I think they also had silver and gold balloons or something. Anyway, it was pretty!

And all THROUGH the parade, they were singing the first two verses of that song, which is the official girl scout song or something like that, and especially loudly when we passed by the judges' box.

Was I surprised when we won First Place! But, you know, it was cuteness personified, so I really shouldn't have been so surprised.

Good times, good times.

P.S. I just read Siobhan's. See what you started?

Have a more outgoing friend drag you around...you'll meet new people and still have the 'comfort zone' of being with someone you already know.

I dunno if you'd find a greater success *rate* in any one kind of place really. The Cartel Hangout came into being as an in-world place for the forum regulars to meet up. Despite the occasional accusation of being a clique, and the sadly quiet times when it may seem deserted, there are more usually a real lively bunch .. just be wary of the bar staff!

Hang out at the Duchy for the different shows. There are always a bunch of people there and the people change from day to day. Also, try going to any of the Radio Radio shows! I always meet nice people there

Thank you. But alas, they turned into teenagers (despite the fact that I expressly forbade them from doing that), and this fall, the second and last one leaves the house for college.

Its funny, im kinda in the same boat. I'm getting to know you all and would like to see you in world sometime. My SL time is very limited, but I hope to some time catch a party, or just hit things at the right time. The places I used to frequent have become quiet, unless im on very late.
