Bear Infohub War

My friends and I hang out at the only mature infohub I know of, the one at Bear. For the past few months, the owner of a nearby club has waged a constant battle to keep people out of the infohub because we are, in the person's own words, 'loitering'. It's a natural hangout spot. We chat, help out newbies, and mind our own business for the most part although we might act a little freakish at times (all in good fun). Little griefing goes on, less than I've seen elsewhere. Well, this club owner took it to a whole new level the other day. A campbot farm was set up to crowd out the sim and keep us out. I was the first to notice, and I started telling people about it so we could AR en masse. A friend popped up a few minutes later, doing the same. He managed to get hold of a Linden (I think it was Teeple-not sure which one) and brought it up. A few minutes later, a Linden showed up in Bear...then suddenly the sim went down for 'maintenance' (translated kicking out the bots). Poof. Bots gone, and the club owner was forced by the Lindens to shut down the camp pads.

So, I actually have to say it (omg) WTG Lindens

So I've heard...but I've never understood her perma-grudge against people hanging out there to be honest. I just think she went way too far that time. I was rather surprised at the swift action by LL though.

Probably because she can't get into the sim she owns land on

There usually aren't very many people at the Bear Infohub, it's not like, say, Ahern. I used to have it set as my home, and I've seen 10 people max there at the same time.

No need. I've heard straight from the horse's mouth so to speak. Repeatedly. I do understand what she's saying, though. I just don't think it's right to try to keep people out of a public infohub. What would the poor newbs do? I wish I had ended up there from OI instead of Korea1. I find that the people who hang out in such places are better that the info signs scattered about.

To Ingrid- that's true for most of the day. A fair chunk of the crowd that shows up is either from the West Coast or from the UK/ Australia. When those people are on, then it gets to about 20 at most. One reason is to avoid places like Ahern. It's a rotating crowd though.

Ideally Infohubs should be in their own dedicated sims -- the problem is though you run into business owners who WANT to be next to these. If I could get a piece of land adjacent to Bear or Calleta I'd do so in a minute, even without products to sell right away, because they're such hopping places.

I admire the landowner's tenacity (I forget her name) but SL has taught me many times that your rights end at your parcel boundry and you need to learn to move on.

Sooo....what's her problem with the infohub that causes her to march into a botwar against 10-15 people regularly hanging out there?

Also, did anybody check the sky above the club for bots? ;P

Did she buy her land before or after the infohub was there?

Either way, trying to grief the infohub out of existence isn't the act of a sane individual.

Maybe I'll set my alt's home there, just to annoy.

Wait...

She owns the land she's putting campers on, and LL is removing them? Why?

She bought it when it was Telehub land IIRC, which in my opinion was 10k times worse.

So the idea of making her club (in the same sim) more appealing so people come hang out there instead of the infohub isn't part of her business model?

Seriously, if you're trying to attract people into a place, you would think that actively trying to get a reputation as a psychotic bitch would be a hair lower on the priorities.

Maybe we should summon her to this thread.

Uh, haven't we seen personally that there are business owners who seem to cultivate the 'psychotic bitch' reputation? ^_^

Up until it starts interfering with other people's use of the sim. And especially if there's an infohub on the sim.

Doing it to attract business is one thing. Doing it to keep people out of a neighboring parcel is a Denial of Service attack.

I don't know. If it's her land, and she wants to put in camping seems to me that LL keeps their hands off that type thing.

What's the difference between infohub people not being able to get into the hub and the landowner not being able to use her land? Tier.

It also helps that a bunch of people ARed her for it on the same day. If everyone ARed all the other camp farms in residential sims on the grid in an organized manner, many of them would probably be shut down as well.

According to her threads (and I believe she even has a web site and SL group on the topic), she claims that Bear is usually full to capacity so that she and her neighbors can't get onto her land. The camping thing was her way of giving the infohub crowd a taste of their own medicine. We all know how that kind of escalation turns out, though...

Actually, if you read her many posts on the topic it comes out that she is running a business specifically in that sim to attract new residents to her school for her "learn to run your own club in SL" business. Her complaints are that she wants to hold classes, not that she can't get into the sim. She won't move to another non-infohub sim because she's really after the infohub newbie traffic. The real problem in her view is that "loiterers" are preventing new arrivals at the Bear Infohub, thus depriving her of continued exposure to newbies.

A smarter business person who look at all that traffic and find a way to profit from it, rather than being a jerk to the very people they are trying to attract.

Just as an added FYI, during the first Bear Infohub dustup the Voodoo people owned their own sim, so they had no reason to want to stay in Bear other than to advertise to the Infohub traffic. So, she wants the Infohub land and the traffic it brings, she just wants people not to hang out there and socialize (folly in a world built around socialization, if you ask me.)

the problem is that the "loiterers" are not newbies and really should move on from that info hub.

I imagine they think that they might be helping out the newbies coming there, but from what I heard from stories on the other thread (and have been verified) is that the loiterers sometimes play tricks on the newly arrived avi's and I believe there was an incident of leading a new girl off into an open area where they shot her.

That type of behavior is pathetic if you ask me.

And with a world as vast and exciting as SL is, I would think that these loiterers could find a better place to hang out.

One of their excuses for staying there is that they can set it to home...ok...big deal...try setting your startup location to be "last location" and go find a cool club to spend your time in.

Those are my feelings on this entire issue.

The "landowner" in question is just trying to run a business/school and she is can't with all of the loiterers adding to the normal newbie traffic.

I agree, that she might have gone too far by adding campers just to fill up the sim...but I am guessing that she has been battling for awhile and is completely fed up with this entire situation.

(personally, I would move...set up advertising at the various info hubs, and be done with it)
