OK, so with the allegation against Minnu skins - which I had recommended to a number of friends over the past few months >.< - I'd like to know of places to find good skins. I'd especially like to know recommendations for black skins, as when I was shopping for one with a friend, we didn't find much to choose from at all.

I normally wear one from Body Politik, the Dante from Naughty, or for a dead skin, the überpale Johnny from RAC.

Negative on Abyss. I recently had a friend start SL and we went out to get him his first skin on May 1. He liked one at Abyss and purchased - however, his computer is really not up to SL snuff and the lag was so bad that he purchased the wrong skin by accident. So, we sent an IM to the creator (Khai Sinister) asking for help. No response. After about 4 days we sent a notecard, thinking maybe his IM's had been capped. It's been 3 days and still no response.

Unless this guy has been hit by a bus and is in the hospital, he's a sack of shit who doesn't deserve anybody's business.

Don't reward assholes who can't respond to customer service requests.

There aren't a lot. I'm not a fan of RaC/Laqroki usually, but I actually think her black skins were nicely done.

Chloe by RaC, greatly improved at Second Style Fashionista

To tell the truth, as much as I adore Armando in that Abyss skin, I don't trust a vendor who simply dissapears, as Isablan said. A friend of mine who's familiar with Renderousity and does Poser renders also said that his female skins were Frankensteinian creations that had pieces pulled from multiple models, and since she's far more familiar with skins I'll take her word for it.

As for confirmed, original and quality skin makers, I must shout emphatically:

TRAP by my friend Selos Dae, fantasy skins and tattoos, plus some gorgeous authentic geisha skins
Launa Fauna, sourced from creative commons pictures and pictures of herself
La Sylphide by Stephanie Misfit, completely hand drawn and beautifully soft skins
Tuli, she's gone through five generations and her last is a doozy of a lovely.
Sin skins, don't know Portia personally but her skins look original and have the same evolution, hand drawn look and they're only 200L right now!

Well word on the street is Abyss is Lost, and Lost has made it clear what his views on customer service are, so that doesn't shock me.

I didn't know it was Lost when I got mine, which was disappointing to find out as I deliberately went to try and find one that wasn't his.

I'm also annoyed that every man on the grid uses it now.

Come to think of it, when I purchased mine, there was a glitch with SL not delivering the skins. I had to purchase it again, and immediately contacted the owner via both IM and notecard, and never heard a word back (or got the thousands of L$ back). It makes sense now.

Khai Sinister was really helpful to me when I didn't receive my hair when I first purchased it. It's honestly one of my favorite ones.

But it did take him a while to get back to me on it - to the point where I had mentally blacklisted him.

So, you're looking for darker skin options from non-suspicious sources. In these times we can never truly know legitimate content creators from the non-legitimate. You just have to take a plunge. Chances are hand-drawn skins will not be bootlegged from other sources. Here's a short list of creators who make 'em* with dark options:

FLEUR by CJ Carnot and Roslin Petion: "Vivant Men's"
NORA BODYSKINS by Sezmra Svarog: "David" and "Hunter"
NYLON OUTFITTERS by Nylon Pinkney
PIXELDOLLS/PIXELSPA by Nephilaine Protagonist: "Stella di Roccia"
RANDOM by Garbage Prototype: "Male Skins"
STEAM POWERED INDUSTRIES by Disembodied Hand: "Uchi I" and "Uchi II"

This being said, I can in no way unequivocally tote that any product in SL™ has not been copied from another source. Buy, use and endorse at your own discretion and risk.

I've also noticed this, they are everywhere and most of the people using them tend to look pretty much the same as well. Although I don't get out much.

I've never been a fan of Nomine's normal human skins for women, maybe the men are better.

I have a very nice black skin made by Robin Sojourner. The hands are perfect, and it doesn't look like a white skin covered with brown paint.

The thing about the Abyss skin is that it's so boldly shaded that changes to the AV mesh don't affect it very much. It's attractive, but I sort of cringe as I see more and more of my friends' faces turn into the Naughty hair ad model from a year and a half ago--it's effectively the same face.

A really good alternative is the "Adam" skin from PXL. Damiani's "Joshua" is also really good and a bit more masculine, not sure why. The "Emil" skin from Redgrave is nice, also masculine, if a little too detailed or something. Head-Toe used to have a similar skin. And the formerly-RaC male skins are pretty good. All of those are in the same class IMHO.

The Nomine skins are worth a serious look; they don't compare well directly to the photosourced skins but are really pretty good taken as they are.
