I get really wary of these kind of "blow ups" None of us know for sure if she did "steal" them but already she is being judged...I feel sad for her if none of this is true.

I don't know.. I guess I need it to be proven without a doubt before I can judge someone.

The rise to the top can be so quick in SL and the fall so painful.

When I go skin shopping, all those things are just about the last thing on my mind. What I care about is, do I like it? Check out the demo, see how it wears, and if so, I'll consider buying it.

If I'm supposed to go through all that just to buy a skin, I'll just pass. A skin in SL is not a car in RL.

If Minnu has used parts of this product in their skins, they are wrong to do so. This product is designed to be used in RENDERS only. That is a specific limitation that you do not see on Merchant-Resource items.

No, you're right, it isn't the same THING, it's just the same principle. Again, no one is saying anyone HAS to do any research. I certainly don't research the clothes I buy in SL. I just think it's unfortunate that some designers can and do, and I'm not saying that Minnu is one of these designers, take advantage of the general population's ignorance on subjects they are not as entwined with.

By all means, continue shopping as you like. I know I will.

Oh I see, it's not he money, but the reputation. The Seller's reputation will suffer if a few forum readers stop wearing her skins in public.

I find this phrase "ultimately it’s your community and the honest buyers that have been cheated and stolen from and not just me" kind of odd. How have the community been cheated here? Y'all paid money and got nice skins, right? Your option would've been to buy it directly from the artist and upload it yourself; but you'd still paid for it. So the end user hasn't really been cheated at all.

If I create a character in Poser and equip it with clothing, poses, props, the next step is to set the stage lighting and backgrounds, etc., after which I do a "render" -- basically a render is how Poser creates a graphics file, a picture of your posed creation which can then also be manipulated in Photoshop.

A lot goes into setting up the props and character, finding and saving the desired camera angles and lighting, and then finally doing the actual "render".

So the render product (a bmp or jpg, etc) is yours to use but the skins, hair, clothing, etc., remain the property of the original creator.

EDIT: Hopefully this will hotlink for me. There is a gallery of various artist renders on Renderosity. This is an example of one artistic render:

Renders, still images that convey an idea. I am unsure if this would bleed into animations/video work. I'm not an accomplished 3D artist.

Commercial advertisements, web-authoring, product advertisements, clip-art packages. If you need an IMAGE for your business.

Art! I you're a 3d artist that does or does not sell prints, and you need a hot female character to hold a sword over a dead dragon's body.

Any place that you'd need a still image of X.

Thanks. I think I get it. I just find it odd that artists would use someone elses image in their work.

I cant pretend to understand.. but maybe its a case of the Artist has the vision of how the end product will look..but needs others props to reach it?

Kinda like someone directing a film? Needs the actors to take their places?

Maybe I am just talking shit..

But, wouldn't someone wearing this skin be considered a render?

No, that's pretty much how it works. It also allows some people who are not capable of creating their own objects/characters/images(I personally cannot afford 3DSMax, for instance) to put together an artistic vision, whether or not it will be heavily "3D" in the end.

Kind of like how MMO Developers hire and license an art company to create avatars for their games.

It's like shooting a movie or doing a photo shoot - you may have a makeup artist fix the model up, but you didn't create the camera, backdrops, and props.

The Renderosity community has historically provided the basic tools for these renders (pictures) free of charge or for small fees WITHIN the stated limits. E.g., it's like GLIntercepting someone's textures in SL - they may have sold you the item to use within limits, but the minute you rip it off and try to resell as your own, you've commited a violation of copyright.

I don't think that's the main issue here. The main issue is that a content creator apparently has used someone else's work to make money for themselves.

So if they had added a notecard in with the skin "based on XXX skins url etc."?

It's possible Danae may have accepted this kind of credit. But that really depends on whether or not Danae considers SL Avatars be a render.

Technically speaking, I believe that they are not, but I tend to err towards the creator. It's really hard to say for sure.

Also let me say that the Entice line by NoraSkins is very nice and I believe there is a male line. If you didn't like the face on NoraSkins in the past (I didn't and I had everyone from when she brought down the sim with her L$1 sale but I never wore them ) anyway she's totally redrawn the face and I've now put the Entice line into my regular rotation.

Also if you join her group she has awesome sales and give aways.

Would Dannae sell her work to be used in SL avatars? My god what she did is breath taking!

As Mourna pointed out, The Abyss male skins are great. I'd go so far as to say that currently they are the pinnacle of male skins. I own quite a lot of them BECAUSE I tried and tried and found NONE better. The next best was the Naughty skin, which someone mentioned was also made by the guy who made the Abyss skin.

Yes, I'm annoyed that every Tom, Dick and Harry now wears these Abyss skins, but the caveat is-- they all look like clones because none of them ever has taken a second to move a face slider on "Edit appearance".

I think I still look unique in the skin for that precise reason. My shape is the result of hours of playing and tweaking sliders so my avatar is close to how I look --more precisely-- how I looked, at 25-30 age range that most avatars seem to represent in SL.

I tell you those female skins Dannae designed fior rendering--are leaving me speechless. Incredible work

Agreed. Danae owns the copyright and it's really up to her how she wants to enforce it. Knowing that Minnu may have made an obscene amount of money off her work, she may ask for financial compensation. Or she might just ask for accreditation, or just ask that the skins be removed. Who knows.

I wouldn't so much call it a rumor, as the answer is one google search away, namely on Naughty's old blog. If they had intended to hide that they are Naughty I'm sure they wouldn't have posted the skin all over their old blog and made their hair ads with it.

They might have tweaked it a bit, but it's definitely the same skin.

SKIN. DRAMA. OMG.
