yeah, I know. But at this point the horse is out of the barn with the third party ripping tools. I've used them myself for honest purposes and don't really care. It's like a gun. I don't care if you own it or you shoot cans with it, it's only when it's used to hurt someone that it's a problem.

well, I don't make my skins in PS alone. It a mix of Modo, Zbrush and PS. There's a lot of files, a lot of materials. Plus I am painting directly to mesh in the 3d app at the beginning to map photos to the mesh, so yeah, there's going to be flattening going on.

yeah, some do. I think every skin maker does it different But the important thing is to save your creation steps. If you have them, that's all that matters. Doesnt have to be one file, could be 10-20 files... but it just says how complex high-end texturing techniques can get.

I really think that the Tenshi hate should be confined to the comments section of her own blog. I just get too confused when the hate spreads elsewhere, it's much too hard to keep up. SCD has always been the best source for Tenshi hate in my opinion.

Anything else is just outsourcing frankly. Support domestic grown Tenshi hate straight from the source!

Well if Ten is correct, Minnu is not claiming her work is a derivative of Danae's, she is claiming that she did not use any of Danae's work, period.

Well, after taking a look at what I could find relevant to this issue:

-The skins in question certainly do look to be ripoffs (I even did some overlapping in my photo editor for comparison), with of course the chief difference being the quality between the original and the SL version

-Tenshi was zealously raked over the coals for doing a public service with this. I haven't seen this much Tenshi-hate in a while. Minnu definitely has a fan base out there, but how many will remain if the piracy is proven?

No dramaz like fashion dramaz.

I do have a tutorial for that, and use baking on my garments often. And yes, I did write a tutorial on it- not a great one, but I tried.

It is true that with baking process, the output is a flattened image. I and every other texture artist I know still goes through the complex-psd process for the bases that go into the channels that will produce the render. In most cases with baking, not only are you producing a color map but also maps to control specularity, light diffusion, and bump levels- so in theory, for light-baked maps, there should be a pretty obvious image trail to support the production of the final maps.

In this case though, the fine point is really in the whole distribution argument. Questions of derivative or not aside, it seems pretty clear that distribution was prohibited per the liscence.

-Nephi
(oh yeah. Cris can you PM me about options for resetting the email adress that my Nephilaine Protagonist account is using? I can't remember which one I used and I think it may be the one I don't have access to anymore)

Edit:
Those group messages were scary.

Edit Edit:
Yep Modo was made by a bunch of people who, if I recall correctly, got fed up with Newtek (they make LightWave 3d) and left to made a better product.

Edit The Third:
Yes, ogling a shape you are wearing in world is occasionally useful. Otherwise you are baking to what amounts to Ruth- not the optimal situation. Ogle records the mesh plus slider deformations, so it comes in handy when you are doing garments with loose sleeves, ect.

Hypatia's explanations are much more detailed than I could offer, however I wanted to interject a fine point:

In order to create clothing or skins specifically designed for the SL avatar, it's best to use one of the avatar templates -- Chip Midnight has probably done more for the benefit of content creators than anyone I know with his high resolution, layered templates. They even have a color coded layer to help you match seams.

The Poser model/mesh is based on Poser's P2 (that's version 2), and is used for two main purposes: creating animations/poses or for trying on the clothing offline which you create with the mesh template.

Other methods may work, but in my experience the link between the SL avatar and Poser is only close enough to provide a few rudimentary tools. Clothing created for Poser normally comes with a bump map layer which is already baked into the SL mesh, so you'd have to really know what you're doing to come up with a good finished product.

For me it's just much easier to start with Chip's templates and create my own stuff.

Wow. Just read through Quip's link, Commonsensible.net ... Some "what ifs" come to mind.

What IF it turns out that Minnu is found not guilty in a real court of law? Would she then have legal recourse to claim libel damages from blogs that have a record of defaming her? (There's demonstrable revenue loss there, which I think would make it actionable).

And why would Danae contact a blogger about this instead of addressing Minnu or her own lawyers first?

I really am Confused Cat

this is really moving to fast for me. We are on page 18 and when I left to sleep there were 11 pages only.

You have to stop posting when i'm asleep, lol

So, I try to find the only news I'm really intersted now and didn't: has Minnu stepped out of her silent vote and made an public statment yet???

Because that is whats is really puzzling me, why in hell, if she is not guilty of any of this, does'n she say so? I think at least her costumers deserve that.

Some of the blog comments over at ShoppingCartDrama would have us believe that Minnu's lawyer has advised her to stay quiet until it can be resolved.

It's plausible to me, and probably something Danae should have done rather than approach a fashion blog for something this serious.

Aradia Dielli:
Quote:
Danae isn’t it true that Minnu sent you her PSD files and some of her sources? I saw some of what she sent you and it was pretty dang clear to me, I don’t quite understand what it is you need exactly and you won’t see a comment here from Minnu at all, she will not feed Tensh and her drama, even though Tensh has tried messaging her in-world on both her regular and alt account.
and...

Quote:
Minnu is fine Tensh, as much as you’d love to hear she isn’t and has been in touch with Danae via email all day. So don’t worry, things will be ok
Take it with a grain of salt. This country's political history over the last 4 to 5 years ought to tell us that blogs aren't usually a good source for journalistic integrity. Sometimes they are right, but more often they don't have all the facts.

Popcorn entertainment factor aside, I strongly agree that this issue had no place in the public forum during the first few rounds of legal exchanges between the two sides.

If Danae's complaint is valid and legally sound, her emo outburst is not very sensible. Minnu's silence is in keeping with a potentially damaging suit -- the last thing you need is to further muddy the waters. So given some rather different versions of the exchanges that are happening behind closed doors, what exactly is Danae gaining by making all this public?

And one final gratuitous comment about the Minnu Group -- I'd have a pretty hard line for a group that was created to promote and support my product line. No way in hell would I let an ongoing legal issue be discussed on my own group.
