I couldnt of agreed anymore with you! I've been saying this for about 6 months now... infact i really can't wait till something else comes along.

when's the last time LL promised something? better yet when's the last time they came through with it?

I hate to say it, but every year around this time people have been predicting LL's demise and saying "year X is the make-or-break year." I think it may have been true, but they've made it every time.

In 2003, people were predicting 1.2 would be the end of the world, with prim limits, land tier, and so forth. Instead, it turned out to be the basis of the economy we all know today which has flourished. Since then, land barons, months on end of grid instability, free accounts, 1.7's instability, all have been overcome.

Somehow, it survives.

Regards,

-Flip

Did Linden Lab go out of business and I missed it? Did Second Life stop growing at a phenomenal rate, or regress? Nope.

For every person that drops out or tiers back, historically, there have been more than one to take their place. The first "dip" ever was over the past summer, and they seem to have recovered pretty quickly.

it is my opinion that there is a vast difference between 'overcoming' grid instability and such, and barely chugging along.
youre very confident, linden may be arrogantly confident, but the competition hasnt landed just yet.
all im going to say on this topic.

HA! Exactly. zOMG, the sky is still falling! Sometimes I think we're the "community that cried wolf" - I've been hearing about SL's demise for years now, and while I agree its hardly a stable, mature product, I've given up on the doomsayers.

Of course, if LL or SL does eventually go under, I fully expect all of them to say, "told ya so", even after all these years.

-Flip

Flip, theBIG difference is that in the past, SL was the only game in town. There was no where else to go if you really wanted a similar experience. This, of course, is much of what has fueled and continues to fuel LL's collective arrogance.

Times do change, my friends, and the SL monopoly WILL end some day. I believe that WHEN decent competition comes along, there will be a FLOOD of people and money out of SL.

I can be wrong, I've been wrong before. I HOPE I am wrong this time, but I stand by my prediction. Competition combined with LL's unbridled arrogance and unwillingness and/or inability to correct annoying and bothersome issues will cause them SERIOUS problems.

Also, by "make or break" I did not necessarily mean their demise could happen in 2008. when I meant was that the seeds of disaster have been sown and if LL does NOT address these issues in a satisfactory way in 2008, they will be far less succesful than would have been had they done so.

I dont see them really going broke or folding. I see them probably in second or third place in virtual worlds similar to SL in the future. Someone who is SMARTER and has a better business model will take the lead.

This reminds me of Amy Weebler's predictions for 2007:
http://www.secondlifeinsider.com/200...e-predictions/

"People will predict Linden Lab's imminent demise with TWICE the furious rhetoric that they had in 2006, 2005, 2004, AND 2003!"

That Weebler is like Nostradamus!

so i've noticed. Like i mentioned the land is "sold" to someone else already... who inturn has chopped up the land to small bits (it was only 2048m2 to begin with) and is now selling it on some auction page of theirs. Worst yet... people are actually buying it. weird.

Robo Marx made what seems to me to be a bonehead move. Two of them actually.

Maggie Linden gave him some crap in a private IM session while dealing with complaints about him placing ban lines on 16 sqm parcels which he never uses. So, #1. he posted the chat log on his own blog. Aside from being a TOS violation if he did that without her permission, the chat log reflected very badly on him. And #2., he took the ban lines BUT replaced them with casino ads. And casinos are totally against the rules (unless you operate them on a non-LL server which currently means you would have to have them one of IBM's sims. Robo is not affiliated with IBM, as far as I know.)

I ARed his sorry little butt.

It is not against the rules to post chat logs on servers that are outside of Linden Lab's control. It is only illegal to post chat logs on the official SL forums or blogs.

Casinos are clearly banned, but recently the Linden response was somewhat hazy.

And by the way, holy necropost, Batman!
