Organic's Mark Kingdon Flies to Linden Labs

News just dropped that Organic Chief Mark Kingdon has flown the coop to join Second Life developer Linden Lab as CEO. Congrats to Mark, a longtime friend of ClickZ. Here's hoping he can help marketers wrap their brains around the virtual world -- something that hasn't exactly panned out so far.

Are we all hoping for that too??
NO.

Sooooo.... Organic, idealab (ROFL!!!), and Price Waterhouse. Looks like those who wanted LL to become less technical have their wish ... this is all pretty fluffy, pretty happyhappyjoyjoy, dontcha think?

Unfortunately, SL is pretty demanding technology. It will be difficult for M to call shenanigans if someone tries to snow him.

*ponders* will this result in all the core development for SL moving to Boston, under the former Windmark team? I could see a lot of fully vested (from an options point of view) developers in SanFran deciding that now would be a good time to leave the place to the tender mercies of the marketeers.

Maybe join Cory wherever he ends up.

I would like to hear from Philip why he feels like this is a good choice. This seems like the kind of a guy that you would hire for a marketing position, or for reaching out and developing partnerships with other businesses.

I find it odd that he has no technology experience whatsoever. Perhaps this can be a good thing (especially if you don't want the CEO second guessing you). But it seems to me that the most significant problems that Linden Lab faces is in the area of scaling it's technology and making it more accessible.

It has never been about bringing in more residents, or more businesses. They get here; they don't get it; they become frustrated; they leave. What is he going to do about this?

Well, you only have to worry about hardware if you're running off to party with Bill Clinton and need the extra booze cash.

Maybe this guy will be a little honest too. Am I hoping too much?

And now in our encouraging and hopeful news category, the realXtend team will be hosting a meet and greet on Arkala Island of Innovation tomorrow, Wednesday, morning beginning at 5am PST. Also HiPiHi is conducting an open beta while the Metaplace and Vastpark projects are conducting stress tests.

The future does indeed look bright on the virtual front today.

Yes, M could end up leaning on friends at MOU. Which could be bad news for Robin.

It seems to me that M has nothing to lose here. CEO of LL is well outside of his most intuitive career path. If he fails, it will be within two years, and it wouldn't be because of mistakes in advertising or branding. So he would be 47, his reputation in his primary field of expertise would be unhurt, and he could return to it and create his own advertising/marketing firm, using the lessons, connections and street cred gained at LL.

Perhaps then Philip would pull a Steve Jobs and return?

Well he must be smart, since he's seen something in SL that I've obviously missed. As far as I could tell, it was wrong place as well as wrong time. SL doesn't get the focused traffic it would need to be a marketting platform. Sure, it's got a userbase, but so does the internet. Unless he puts banner ads directly in the client, chances are only a teensy tiny little bitty fraction of the userbase will ever see your marketing campaign. SL is like a horrendously ugly, inefficient, hard to navigate, internet. I'm not bitter or anything .

He sounds cool. At the very least he knows how to run a ship. Let Philip handle direction, let M handle the show.

As for non-tech etc ... a lot of LL's current problems especially regarding customer service are, in my book, non-tech matters which may need someone precisely with M's kind of experience to handle.

Think back to all those policy changes and even the VAT snafu. Someone like M would have handled it much smoother.

Let Philip handle the tech.

It's a good thing you quickly clarified that incendiary first statement. Nobody disses Judi without getting hurt.

But you're still on probation.
