I was in it for a little while in Zatzai's corporation along with a few other SLUers, but I got out of it when I didn't play it as much as I would have liked to. Maybe I'll get back into it someday soon.

Frigate: Small guns
Cruiser/Battle Cruiser: Medium guns
Battleship: Large guns

Generally, you'll want autocannons for pvp (except perhaps in fleet battles), and artillery for missions.

Because most PVP engagements will be at around 30km max range, whereas for PVE missions, you need your group to be at distance so as not to aggro the whole of deadspace by getting too close.

Like Ace said, you want range for missions so the NPCs don't overwhelm you. I fit my cane for level 3s with six arties, two heavy missiles and 5 drones, and it can all hit from around 30km.

Arties have high alpha, whereas autos are about DPS. The range and high alpha would be useful on a battleship in a fleet battle. A group of sniping battleships could use the alpha to take out enemy ships in a volley or two. You'd want arties if you were shooting a POS too, to keep out of the range of its guns. Solo or small gangs, you're usually closeup and in scram range, and you need the DPS to take targets down quickly and break tanks.

Also, Tech 2 autos are essential for Minmatar in pvp. Minmatar usually use barrage to fight at the end of their falloff and out of web range. A webbed Stabber or Vaga is just dead.

This is my current L3 mission ship:

PASSIVECANE - BattleClinic.com - Your online community for EVE Online, Freelancer, Starfleet Command and Jumpgate Evolution.

That's a pretty damn good site for finding ship builds, and they come with Evemon skill plans.

Nice.

I been using heavy malkuths in mine, I may try using light missiles in her... see what toys I can fit in, then, cause itll free up 2 low slots.
(I use a lot of PDU IIs)

Interesting.

For missions I run 6 X 650mm artie T2s, two Limos heavy launchers, AB, tracking computer, two cap recharger IIs, armor repper II, two rat-specific hardeners, DC II and two gyro IIs. Plus 1 medium and 4 light drones. Rigs are two CCCs and an armor trimark pump.

For PVP, 6 x 425m T2 autos, with the remaining two high slots either two heavy missiles, or nos/neut, sometimes I have to throw a remote repper in there if we're spider tanking. Then in the mids, MWD II, web, warp disruptor II, best named medium cap booster. The lows, armor repper II, two EANMs, DC II, and two gyro IIs. Plus drones.

My current loadout...

Vexor
High: Dual 150mm Railgun I
High: Dual 150mm Railgun I
High: Dual 150mm Railgun I
High: Dual 150mm Railgun I
High: Drone Link Augmentor I
Mid: 10MN Afterburner I
Mid: Cap Recharger I
Mid: Sensor Booster I
Low: Cap Power Relay I
Low: Cap Power Relay I
Low: Cap Power Relay I
Low: Medium Armor Repairer I

Working on procuring three Capacitor Control Circuits for the upgrade slots, but damn those things are expensive.

Oh, also 5x Hobgoblin I and 5x Hammerhead I

Now if only I were more effective at managing drones. I never know what to send out in what quantity, how to order them around effectively, etc >.>

And now that my Catalyst isn't seeing much use, I'm working on converting it over to a full salvage rig. Maybe I'll actually start making halfway decent amounts of money, whee!

Is salvaging the best way to make money early on?

I'm up to my Cruiser now, and these missions are still paying out crap. Not that I've really done that many...I've mostly just tooled around and watched what happens

Yup salvage will increase your returns from low level missions pretty significantly. Fit up a destroyer with 4 tractors / 4 salvagers.

Also, and this really starts to pay off around level threes, when you're selling your loot, check the prices of sell orders compared to buy orders. Sometimes the difference can be huge. If it's worthwhile, put up a sell order. I trained enough trading skills to have about 40 sell orders, which I think took me a day or so.
