Is Blizzard deliberately trying to win the Golden Poo?

Blizzard has responded with the following:

We've extensively tested for false positive situations, including replicating system setups for those who have posted claiming they were banned unfairly. We've not found any situations that could produce a false positive, have found that the circumstances for which they were banned were clear and accurate, and we are extremely confident in our findings.

Playing the game on Linux, although not officially supported, will not get you banned – cheating will.

But how is using Wine alone cheating? Linux users have to use Wine in the absence of an official Linux client. While it's technically correct that Wine isn't approved 3rd party software, there is still no excuse for banning players using Wine to play D3 while there have been no problems whatsoever with WoW and Starcraft II.

It's a dick move.

WoW and Starcraft II don't have real money auction houses do they?

If I had to guess, folks are setting up auction-house-bots on linux and spamming the Diablo servers, or some other 'unintended' use of their product/service.

This is a public service reminder that Torchlight 2 is a thing.

I already guessed that. But in the process the baby gets thrown out with the bathwater. There's already more than enough AH botting in WoW and Blizzard don't have as much trouble weeding them out. Botting in SC2 is pointless and lazy unless somebody botted their way onto the pro or semi-pro scene, which is unlikely.

Through all those reports the same two or three usernames keep popping up. Right now it is looking more like Internet echo chamber than widespread banning.

But how many people are simply not posting because Blizzard's questionable (at best) decisions re: Diablo 3 have convinced them to skip it entirely, hrmm?

I know I wrote D3 off even before this latest news. And this is not the sort of thing to convince me to change my mind.

I don't think it will be a lot of impact this time. If bogus "I was unfairly banned!" forum posts really made a dent in game subscriptions, the industry would have been defunct years ago.

Linux isn't supported, so it's quite possible some of their DRM and monitoring software isn't quite happy about it. On the other hand, people are asstards.

I give it 50/50 odds.
