Fable 2

I was very disappointed in the first Fable game, but it looks like Fable 2 will be much better.

There is a lot of info coming out of the Game Developers Conference on the Xbox 360 game Fable 2. One is that there will be no gold dropping in game. The way to make money is to either get a job or gamble.

The job choices are: assassin, blacksmith or woodsman. You can also become a Henchman since Fable 2 will have 2 player co-op. The co-op allows a friend to jump into a game at any time. The gambling is done through a game that combines Roulette and Craps. The gambling game called Keystone will also be available before Fable 2 comes out on Xbox Live Arcade and you will be able to transfer gold from the gambling game to Fable 2 when it comes out. The mini-game is being developed by Carbonated Games.

You can also create a female main character. There is no dieing in Fable 2 instead you will go unconscious for about 30 seconds and wake up with scars which will determine how NPCs treat you. You can spend money, experience or reputation to stop from falling. Boss enemies will inflict major, disfiguring scars.

The game is scheduled to come out in the Fall of this year.

Has Molyneux kept his big yap shut about this one so far? Hopefully they fixed my biggest problems with the original: aging made no freaking sense, it was only 10 hours long, you didn't have very much customization of your character at all.

We'll see.

I actually liked Fable. I only played the PC version which I understood was much different than the xbox one, which was basically like a long demo or something. There were aspects of it I didn't quite understand the point of. I don't think I ever really managed to figure out what the point of having a house was, and turning everything into shops really didn't make a whole lot of sense either. For what they trumped up that whole "you can be gay" thing, it really just amounted to a fuckton of work, concerted, "I will not give in and be straight!" work to "stay gay." I didn't meet another guy who was interested until nearly the end of it, and THE GAME STILL REFERRED TO HIM AS MY WIFE. It was like wtf. And then there was a side quest at a brothel where you essentially had to sleep with one of the prostitutes and then I went from gay to bisexual.

Anyway that was merely an exercise in hypotheticals for me, I wanted to see really what reference point it had given that the game showed up in every gay magazine being trumpeted at how equal rights were finally extending to video games.

I also agree that there was little customization, though the PC version was really long. Aging made a bit more sense there. The moral choices thing wasn't really much of one, because you could either really pick the worst possible choice ever or the good one, so the extremes weren't very realistic. And I hated the interface, it was totally Windows 98.

But I liked it a lot. I thought the graphics were gorgeous, the plot was pretty interesting and involving, and it was long enough that I was pretty pleased. Even once the game "ended" it wasn't quite over yet and there were still several hours of end-end game before the final boss. I wish there had been more spells and abilities, or at least a bit more specialization, because by the end of it I basically had every ability you could buy and it was kindof lame. I also had so much money that the game actually stopped counting it because I'd passed the internal limit.

All in all though it had its rough patches but I really did enjoy it a lot. Again I never played the xbox version though which I understand was severely disappointing.

Black and White 2 though....

I agree it was a good game, it just wasn't at all what they had hyped it up to be. I'm glad they aren't doing that same mistake again, and yes like they did with Black & White 1 and 2.

When I say the aging sucked, I just mean it didn't work within the world they created. You finish a bunch of quests and head back to the guild to level up, and you come out 30 years older, or even more if you're a magic user. No one else ages along with you and you end up being several times older than your older sister by the end.

It was also very hyped up to be an open-world game which was totally wrong since there were mostly paths you had to follow. Peter Molyneux said several things about the original Fable game that turned out to be untrue like the above mentioned open-world game play. Hopefully he has learned his lesson about what to say.

Below is a synopsis of his speech at GDC08:

Well I can understand how things change, but yeah, it was a letdown in that respect. It was definitely extremely linear.

It takes Peter Mollygnu at least two tries before he gets it right, it seems. He's the retarded cousin in the Game Designer Supergods pantheon, who gets peed on by Will Wright and Sid Maier.

New info has come out and the content is complete, they just have to squash many bugs. Translated version of http://www.xboxlife.dk/sneak/57/Fable2.html

  • Mini-map has been replaced with a "bread crumb trail;" a dynamic golden line on the ground that directs you to a destination (read: medieval GPS)
  • Magic system is divided into focused, single-foe attacks and ranged attacks; attacks can be built up into five levels using various spell combinations
  • Speaking of spells, there'll be just eight (but remember, they can be combined)
  • Every house in the game is up for sale; each house will unlock a sidequest, item or skill
  • Rough estimation: 20-30 times larger than the first Fable [Microsoft says: "a world 10 times the size of the iconic Xbox game"]
  • The gameworld features seasons and dynamic weather
  • Cutscenes are interactive; the d-pad can be used to issue certain gestures that will steer conversations
  • Sex minigame was canned; instead, screen goes dark and moaning ensues (sex can still be unprotected though! Babies, yes; STDs, unconfirmed)
  • Female character was almost canned; almost.
  • And finally: Three more Fable sequels are being planned. (Lionhead is currently wrapping up Fable 2 and focusing on an announced project.)

If they had cancelled the female character it would have moved the game from a day-one purchase to a "maybe i'll get it in a few months if i'm bored and there's nothing else out for a while."

Seriously, i'm tired of wide open, open-ended games where you "create your character" forcing you to have a male character.

3 more Fable sequels? They have got to be kidding, unless these end up being expansions they will just end up running the franchise into the ground. And as for Fable 2, I'm not even going to bother reading into it, because most of what has been said about it will probably end up being cut from the game. In Fable, I was looking forward to the design your sword option that was originally suppose to be in there, but ended up getting cut. And since then I have never believed a word that has come out of that guys mouth.

Also, you couldn't expose that bitch after you married her. WTF.
