Skyrim 1.4 detailed, PC 'Creation Kit' for mods coming soon | Joystiq

Quote:
Skyrim's 1.4 update, which is not a patch of a previous patch, should be finalized by next week and submitted to console manufacturers for certification, as well as release on PC. Bethesda also plans to allow PC users to opt-in to "beta" versions of future patches through Steam, we're guessing so the company can opt-out of launching a patch if significant issues are found.

The publisher also announced that the Creation Kit and Steam Workshop are nearly ready, and it is working with Valve and its modding community to do some final testing.
I wonder if the beta patches will be on it's own separate directory like MMOs do for public testing yet allow current characters be used on it.

The CK has been "coming soon" ever since release

And I hope the beta patches don't download automatically. I never even knew I'd downloaded the one that made dragons fly backwards until it was too late.

I downloaded that yesterday and was blown away by how huge it was. I particularly liked the fully-functional forge/smelter and the alchemy and enchanting tables.

Very well done. Unlike another mod (Breezehome 1st Wing) it doesn't make you jump through useless hoops just to get into the addition.

Grabbed it, tried it. Love it! There are only two things.

1) Is it just me or are some of the book shelves non working in the back? Near where you find "Your story" book? Or are they simply for other things?

2) Have a room with some altars for quick Healing, curing of diseases, and blessings.

Other than those two things, I'm blown away and now trying to get the other houses to hook into it.

WIP. Bookshelves appear to be a real hassle to script. The modder was talking 40hours work just for the bookshelves.

I'm now collecting every book I see and placing them a chest for when the library is working.

With those entry doors in the Hideout, shopping has never been easier.

If you read the notes left lying around by the modder, he explains what goes into making working bookshelves.

They're a real pain in the butt. I don't blame him for not going to that much trouble.

Shrines, though, would be a huge boon! I get tired of NPCs telling me I don't look well, when I can't figure out what's wrong with me.

Some of the bookshelves are working. I noticed them by the room ahead of it and now have my books in the shelves. Those work fine. The ones by the stools. (Got my Dragonborn book sitting on one in fact. Too bad it's upside down though.)

Love having my own smelter. I found myself wandering into the smithing room and seeing the forge, the workbench, the grinder and thinking to myself "Now all this needs is .... HELLOOOO!!!" (chuckle)

Dasha,

It has it's good points and it's bad.

Bad:
There are a number of bugs with it that may or may not affect your gameplay. However not everyone has the same bugs and they seem to be getting stomped out more and more as time goes by.

It requires a internet connection to play and activate it with.

Good:
It's wonderfully open ended. It's a sandbox type of RPG. You can ignore the main quest for ages until you decide to go for it and then stop on it pretty much when you feel like it and wander around.

It's very moddable. There are many mod packs out now and there will be many more in the future once the Construction Kit gets released. Note that Mod packs can be installed and ran on the PC version only as far as I know. In fact what Cindy, Rage and I have been discussing is a mod pack that adds a basement to the houses for example. There have been a number of them released (Enhanced and better graohics, textures, and others for example) and almost anyone can make them.

You would need to decide for yourself. I for one accept that there are flaws but the game is getting better and I love being able to do what I want when I want.

Your Mileage may vary.

I highly recommend getting the PC version. You can work around a lot of the mission bugs with the command line, (which isn't possible from a console). This plus mods, etc.

Okay, I have a quick question about the house add-ons. Are those persistent after patching the game? I'd hate to store all my stuff then lose everything in an update.

They should be but with any mod you are introducing some level of risk.

The 2nd house mod that I tried (for Proudspire Manor) had a bug in it that only popped up 24 hours of game play after you installed it. It broke the save function which really sucked. I should have read the mod comments more completely and I would have discovered that people were already having problems with it. Anyway, I went back to a previous version and didn't lose anything except that 24 hours of game play. And, of course, I found a new mod that I installed for the same house - lol.

I don't have the PC version of Skyrim but I thought these were some good mods. Included is one where you can make a leather map of Skyrim using three leathers. More features are in the works for the map including different maps scattered throughout the game and sold at city general stores, with higher-quality versions being available at a higher cost.

I have had incredibly few bug encounters and I'm currently on my 3rd playthrough.

The worst one was when I had already talked to Jarl Ulfric's steward about joining the Stormcloak rebellion before I finished the quest where you have to bring the two leaders to the peace table.

But I solved that one easily by using the console code to advance that quest one step to fool Ulfric into thinking he'd already agreed to meet with the Empire

Once I'd finished the big main dragon quest, I was able to go back and do the civil war quest line without an issue.

Warning: Once you start playing and kill your first dragon, you're hooked. There will be no turning back.

I know the feeling. Right now, I stopped the main dragon quest after talking with the Graybeards and am happily wandering around exploring and finding places to visit, caves to clear out, etc. Being a sneaky archer can be a lot of fun!

My favorite skill combo. I finished one game with that combination already and it was so much fun I'm very tempted to just make another one

I was playing my heavy armor/2h Sword warrior tonight and started wondering how she could ever do the Thieves' Guild or Dark Brotherhood quest lines without stealth. And those two quest lines are almost half the story in the game, as well as being the most fun.

I don't know if I've ever been as compelled as I was doing the DB line. Maybe I'll make an assassin - daggers and stealth instead of archery.

Near as I can figure it has something to do with the quest where you take a follower to be sacrificed.

Archery + Stealth FTW.

I wish the one-handed perks worked for daggers too >_<

Even my previous character (sort of a barbarian) was sneaky. Yay for 2x damage with a warhammer

Concerning the Hideout mod and items vanishing:

About the only real glitch that seems to be happening as far as losing things is concerning the Satchels (Apothicary at least not sure about the Enchanter satchel) Apparently after a period of time they reset thus you lose everything that was in there. This probably will be fixed in the next version. In the meantime what you can do is use one of the chests for your alchemical ingredients for storage. If your feeling very paranoid, use on the chest by your bed in Breezehome. That's one from Bethesda and should be completely safe.

Forum thread for the Dovahkin Hideout is located here Dovahkiin Hideout at Skyrim Nexus - Skyrim Mods and community

Edit to add:

Glad you like the combo of Stealth and Archery. Been having a blast that way myself. There is an audio mod that I can recommend that just puts icing on the cake. It replaces the sound that a being makes when you kill them from stealth to the "Wilhelm Scream". Found it: http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=3184 It's hilarious potshotting someone (or something) and hearing "aauuuaggghhh!!"
