Torchlight

If you are a fan of the Diablo series, you have to get Torchlight for the PC (Mac version coming later). It is from the original creators of Diablo, Mythos and Fate, and is incredibly fun. On top of that, it is only $20. Mods have already started popping up for it, and Runic is going to release the level creation tools soon. It is single player only, but they are working on an MMO version as well. I had no idea this game was coming out - I discovered it by accident, and have been playing it nonstop. There are three character classes, and you have a pet that fights, casts spells, and can be sent back to town to sell off your excess stuff to make room. It is classic Diablo gameplay in an updated, streamlined package.

I got it through Steam this morning and its a good game to tide people over til Diablo 3 comes out. What I find interesting is that it has an option that allows it to be played on a Netbook.

It's a cute game, very fun. I'm playing it as a break when I get too wrung out with Borderland's intensity.

Graphics are kind of WoW/Anime', game play is like a polished Diablo -- and the music, in fact, was composed by Matt Uelmen who did the scores for both Diablos before this. Some of the strains are very recognizable, and I've found myself standing in town just listening to the music.

The devs are talking about releasing the dev kit so players can build mods for this, so it has some promise.

All classes get pets. You can feed them fish and they morph into fiercer pets (you have to fish for the fish!) and you can even send them back to town to sell loot while you keep plundering.

I like my rogue-type character. She has one set of gear for her (purple) rifle, shown here (she can also use pistols), and another for a bow - just like you can do in Diablo with 2 loadouts of weapons and armor.

Best of all, it's $20 on D2D!

There are already some mods available, including new skins for the characters:

I just heard about this. A bit disappointed it has no small group play. I will try it today. Anyone recommend a place to buy it online that doesn't require a membership?

Direct2Drive membership is free, and I downloaded it from them for $20.

The main reason you have to register with them is so they can send you download notifications and help you with support tickets.

I really didn't need to spend another 20 bucks right now. I'm also disappointed there's no co-op play.

I'm just torn on whether to buy now or wait for the Mac version. Maybe it will fill the gap Dungeon Runners left...

ETA: scratch that. Knowing the way ports to Mac wind up, it'll cost twice as much and not be available for another six months.

God I hate this game!

Second night in a row I stayed up too late playing it. Now I am tired and have to go to work

Torchlight so far

Very fun game owing much more to Diablo than Diablo 2. It is also clear that they had to cut short development before they were at where they wanted to be.

With any luck this game will show the investors they need to get the financing they will need for the MMO they want to develop, that they can deliver a solid product.
