I pre-ordered Borderlands

It's due out Monday. Direct2Drive is offering 10% off (a whopping $5).

Gameplay looks like a blast - kind of a Halo/Hellgate:London/Diablo shooter look with some skill trees to make it feel more RPGish.

GameInformer gave it 9.25 out of 10.

And as the TV ads are claiming "87 bajillion guns!"

TeamXBOX gave the XBOX 360 version a 9 out of 10, so I imagine the PC version will be just as strong:

Re: I pre-ordered Borderlands

I got the game yesterday through GameFly and played it for about an hour last night. So far it's a pretty good shooter but I haven't gotten much into the RPG elements yet except for how the missions are given out. I've read that the Co-Op part is very good and fun to play. I have the Xbox 360 version.

Oh geez. This is exactly my sort of game. I don't need another game right now!

But I'm probably going to buy it anyway.

Release date Oct 26, and here I sit waiting for Nov. 3 when Dragon Age is coming out.

I figure a week is enough for me to decide if I like it, and to fill my time waiting for DA rather than twiddling my thumbs!

Steam has a four pack special right now for $134.97, witch is just about $34 a piece. Anyone up for it?

If you had an Xbox 360 you wouldn't have to wait til Oct. 26th.

It's worth noting that Borderlands can be preloaded on Steam as of yesterday.

I read in a review that it's probably wise to make two characters. One character being for singleplay and one for coop play, so you don't outlevel your friends. I'm really hoping that level disparity isn't a problem, especially since it's a trivial thing that many level-based multiplayer games managed to solve a long while ago...

I was thinking about that. In Guild Wars (I think?) and LOTRO, for example, you can mentor lower level players. It's still tough because they don't have the full powerset of the higher level player, but at least friends can play together.

In a game like this, probably more important to just have a lot of character slots. Then I can have my MP character and my solo character, plus all the miscellaneous alts I always make trying out different schemes.

Hello, my name is Cindy and I'm an altaholic.

I like the theme song for the game. I think it fits it very well.

I'm ready to give up on my boycott of Steam. I pre-ordered Borderlands last week, and here it is 12:30 pm on the day of release - almost 12 hours into release day and Direct2Drive is still not offering me my damned download

Not sure what the hell the point is in pre-ordering from D2D if this is how they work. I'd almost bet money a physical box order from Amazon would have been here already.

From Direct2Drive:

Borderlands will be released at 3PM PST on October 26, 2009. Release dates are subject to change without notice.

Does Steam have it already available for download? Normally such a specific time requirement comes from the publisher.

ETA:

Steam's version is not available yet either - it says it will be unlocked in approximately 2 hours from now, so only slightly earlier than D2D.

Also, from Amazon:
Borderlands by 2K Games (Oct 26, 2009) (Windows 2000 / Vista / XP)
Buy new: $49.99

Usually ships in 2 to 4 weeks

LOL I already emailed D2D bitching them out

Thanks. That should coincide nicely with dinner and tonight's episode of Heroes. it always takes me 4 to 6 hours to download a full game.

Edit: It was pretty deceiving of them to post a "Play Borderlands in 12 hours 37 minutes" last night. I did the math and figured it would be available at 4:00 AM

Wow, I checked again at about 3:15 central (1:15 PST) and the download was ready two hours early. Furthermore, it's downloading faster than lightning

We are happy kittehs today!

A word of warning: I don't know if this is just a quirk with the digital download or if it applies to all copies of Borderlands.

I install all of my games to C:\Games subdirectories. I refuse to install to the usual Windows default in C:\Program Files (x86)\ etc, otherwise everything I ever install would go there and it'd be a jumbled up mess.

But the Borderlands install will not allow me to use C:\Games. It insists on \Program Files

Bastahds.

Re: I pre-ordered Borderlands

I have a good hint for Borderlands: Search anything that looks like it will open. You can get ammo and money that way. Examples are: Toilets, mailboxes, money boxes and safes.

I'm loving this game. I love the cell shading, the combat system, the interface. So far, nothing to dislike for me although the feel is a bit like console. But I don't mind that as long as I can switch my keyboard bindings around to my preferences.

My big complaint right now? I keep getting this occasional screen freeze, even after I lowered my graphics settings and turned off dynamic shadows.

At first I thought it was my system, but I read that Borderlands uses the Unreal III engine, and the sysreqs I'm seeing are well within my 3.0Ghz duo-core/4GB RAM/Nvidia 8800 GTS spec:

Quote:
OS: Windows XP/Vista
Processor: 2.4 Ghz or equivalent processor
Memory: 1GB System RAM (2GB recommended with Vista)
Graphics: 256mb video ram or better (GeForce 8 series or higher/Radeon R8xx series)
Hard Drive: 8 GB or more free space
Sound: Windows compatible sound card
I suppose it's possible that my graphics card is the problem, since 'minimum requirements' is the bare bones required to run a game. I'm just not in a position to upgrade to something faster right now, and it's frustrating to be in combat and have the game freeze on me for 5-10 seconds. No way I can play co-op with that going on.

That has to be a driver issue, or something conflicting with the game. Slow FPS would be more constant.

That's what I finally gathered from reading the Gearbox tech forum. Others using Nvidia cards reported the same problem.

Updated drivers, problem solved. I can now run Borderlands on full graphic settings without so much as a hiccup

This game is intensely addictive and fun. I even like the cell-shaded graphics. It looks/feels like a console port, but it works a lot better than other ports I've played.

One other thing: If any of you buy and play this game, you'll find out that there's no menu option for disabling the intro ads every time you launch. There is, however, a way to change the ini file to make startup much faster:

Quote:
Comment out the files in the ini,

My Documents\My Games\Borderlands\WillowGame\Config\WillowEngine.i ni

(On my Vista setup, it's C:\Users\Valued Customer\Documents\My Games\Borderlands\WillowGame\Config )

StartupMovies=Gearbox_logo
StartupMovies=NVidia
StartupMovies=Loading
SkippableMovies=2K_logo

Got the PC version off Steam last night and stayed up waaaaaay too late. So far I'm really liking it! Co-op is definitely where it's at. The interface needs work though: you can tell this is a port from the 360. (C'mon Gearbox, if Rocksteady got it right with Arkham Asylum, you can do it right too! )

When they promised 87 bazillion guns in this game, they forgot to tell you that you can only carry about half a dozen or so in inventory and (until you gain more equipment slots with levels) you can only have 2 equipped to hotkeys.

That said, I have an electric autopistol that shocks the snot out of those skag dogs, an incendiary sniper rifle that sets fire to 'em at long range, an incendiary SMG that literally mows down gangs of enemy at close range, and my special assault rifle with bonus damage and big clip.

Sometimes the hardest part about a fight is figuring out which of my toys to use

Biggest booboo yet: I fought Nine Toes, the first boss, right after my soldier gained the turret skill. But I changed the hotkey and then forgot which key it was even though it's in the lower left of the screen (newb!). I managed to win the fight even though I died to his mangy guard dogs. Lesson learned.
