It's pretty fun once you can get multiplayer to work.

Stupid gamespy.

K, so best FPS I've played this year, hands down.

I played it with a friend, LAN-style, for about 9 hours yesterday.

Here's the Siren build I'm going with. (I think.)

Borderlands: Skill Tree

Combined with a 4x fire SMG (with an acid SMG for backup) and a class mod to increase fire damage and a couple related skills, I should be able to do stupidly high amounts of damage later on.

I originally wanted to play the Siren, but started a Soldier because it was supposed to be easier to learn with -- and now I'm so hooked on my soldier, I've only taken my Siren to level 3.

k so feel free to add me to gamespy or whatever, not sure how that works. My gamespy ID is lordfly.

I just hosted my first pub game, it was a disaster... I started a new char, and we had one guy who had his mic on 24/7 (while claiming it was unplugged), causing a horrible echo. Then we had some idiot lure a level 11 psycho badass bandit into Fyrestone... While we were level 1, mind. Hint: It's impossible to kill something that many levels above you.

Combined with the fact that I was only able to have the cheap machine gun and no ammo (due to everyone stealing all the loot), it was less than a stellar experience.

That's a bummer, LF. You can tell (again) that this was a half-finished porting job. No item drop management, no trade windows, no way to kick/mute idiots. Hopefully they'll patch this stuff.

This is why, ever since my first venture onto Battlenet with the first Diablo, I only play with friends (defined as players from boards I participate in who will feel a little accountability).

In Diablo, "town killing" became so rampant that the first time I tried logging in, it took someone roughly 18 seconds to find my game and kill me. Sadly for them, they only got newbie gear

Question - can you import solo characters into an MP game? So you could play your solo guy a few levels and then just do an MP game for grins?

What about playing solo in an MP game by blocking your game to accepting new joiners? I did that in Diablo II all the time so I could respawn all the monsters & loot every time I started it up.

I haven't played MP yet, just solo, and I love it. MP would be fun, I'm sure, as long as you trust your mates It makes the mobs harder and the loot a little better.

There are some problems with MP right now, however. As Lordfly & Lianne note, there've been a lot of complaints about Gamespy. There is no trade window yet (you have to drop weapons on the ground, ala early Diablo 1, and there's no way to give money to others). And there's no loot autosplit, either, so whoever gets the loot first gets to keep it.

Still, even if this were just a solo game I think it's about as addictive and fun as any game I've played this year.

I was finding it rather easy on solo. The difficulty ramps up with 4 people (ie it takes more bullets to take down a dog). It's still very fun, no matter how many people are playing. The gameplay doesn't really change, you're still killing thousands of enemies all the time. It just becomes more hectic (and they drop better loot) with more people.

I would love to play with some of you guys.

And really, it's hard NOT to love a game that randomly spawns guns like a flamethrowing shotgun with a ranged scope.

My grenades not only blast the bad guys, they heal me

I love crawling around on some of those rickety tower structures, crouching behind a wall and rolling a grenade down a ramp into a shack full of psychos. Then my flame-shooting SMG finishes off the survivors

One point I've figured out: I was following the blue diamond to the quest targets for 18 levels, then realized that in many cases it doesn't tell you the actual location. I was crawling all over a bandit structure trying to find a quest item until I realized that the little bag of money on your compass is actually the item location. The blue diamond's just the general vicinity.

Characters can play anywhere. The game doesn't differentiate.

Sure. Just start a private game and don't invite anybody. For respawning purposes, though, you can do this in single-player, too. Also, come back after a while to an area you've cleared out and you may find some new friends have moved in!

You can play solo, but frankly, it's just not as fun. The game subtly encourages you to play co-op: more and tougher mobs, more and better loot, more experience. In fact, I find the game easier with even just one person alongside me, compared to solo.

When you're fighting street-to-street in a burned-out post-apoc town full of people all trying to kill you, there's just something special about sharing that with three of your friends. Spread the love.

Ohhh, you have no idea. There's pop culture references spread throughout the game, and in the item descriptions too.

I think the moneybag icon is for vendors. The scavenger hunt/repair kit quests always take you to the general location. You have to find the actual locations yourself. Fortunately, they always spawn in the same place.

They put that in the Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway game

I'm just waiting for Gearbox to make the next Brothers In Arms game now

I ran into that in my last mission. It took me so long to find all the quest items that the zone respawned behind me. I had to fight my way back out, low on ammunition, using my backup weapons. Fun stuff!

No, the moneybag icon is definitely for dropped items/loot/quest items on the ground. I just tested it. The only vending machine in the zone was a long way back behind me and the moneybag kept moving to the next quest item location. Like three times.

Very fun game, but there are some annoying issues. Right now I'm stuck with no ammo or health kits respawning in a place where there are mobs continually also respawning right at my respawn point. I'm stuck in an infinite loop. Is there any way to get back to a previous save point?

Wow. I came close to that happening to me so many times but I always squeaked by.

Is it possible to hold down L-Shift and run through the mobs? If you're a Soldier, use your turret in those tight spots. If you're a Siren, go invis and it should be a cakewalk.

In one mission when I was low level, I made it out of one of those missions with a generic pistol I'd picked up and 4 rounds of ammo. But I've never been trapped quite like that.

The last mission I ran this morning, I spent a bunch of money on extended ammo capacity so I can carry over 300 rounds of rifle, SMG and shotgun ammo. I even picked up a rocket launcher (one round of which does the work of 4 other weapons). Plus, the soldier has a skill that gives you bigger magazines, too.

Now if I wouldn't get so trigger happy with my machine gun. I can burn 200 rounds in no time if I don't practice self restraint.

So which mission is it? What if you were to open it as a LAN game and bring some friends in to come rescue you?

I asked on the Gearbox board and they're telling me that the stations that offer you the respec/rename also offer you a teleport to another waypoint.

Hopefully there's one near where you're stuck - I know some of the waypoints are just a glowing stick with nothing to click on.

When I restarted the game a bit later it started me at the first spawn point inside that area and I was able to restock on ammo and health and went back through a bit better prepared. I was screwed where I was at. There were two bruisers and about 5 other dudes right at the respawn point and I had to get through them to get back out of there. A level 14 hunter was maybe a bit low to get through Sledge's Safehouse considering all the good crate loot was level 16 in there. Wheeee!

I hear you. The first time I realized I needed to pay more attention to mob levels was the Crystal Cavern, which I tried to do at level 12. The level 15 worms made mincemeat of me.

I did Sledge at level 19 and it was pretty fun, not that tough until Sledge himself. By then I had my rocket launcher and a machine gun with a 60-round clip. I launched a rocket at extreme range and then kept emptying clips into him at point blank range. I had to run back to the health vendor once to heal up, but he didn't heal while I was gone so I could just finish what I started.

Pretty fun fight, not sure how much I'll use his shotgun since it only has 2 rounds per clip. Not at the rate I go through ammo.

Is it just me or are the rocket launchers lamesauce? They claim to do like 300+ damage, say, but most of the time anything your level just shrugs them off.

My rocket launcher made short work of that turret in the Sledge mission. It was tearing me up bad until I ducked behind some boxes, loaded up a couple of rockets and blasted it.

On the way out, I tried to take it on with just my regular guns and had my head handed to me, again. Back to the rocket launcher.

Otherwise, I don't use it too much. Just to soften up bosses, mostly.
